  • This paper represents the numerical analysis on effects of radius ratio in a concentric annulus with a rotating inner cylinder. The numerical model consisted of two cylinder which inner cylinder is rotating and outer cylinder is fix, and the axial direction is used the cyclic condition because of the length for axial direction is assumed infinite. The diameter of inner cylinder is assumed 86.8mm, the numerical parameters are angular velocity and radius ratio. Also, the whole walls of numerical model have no-slip and the working fluid is used water at $20^{\circ}C$. The numerical analysis is assumed the transient state to observe the flow variations by time and the 3-D cylindrical coordinate system. The calculation grid adopted a non-constant grid for dense arrangement near the wall side of cylinder, the standard $k-{\omega}$ high Reynolds number model to consider the effect of turbulence flow and wall, the fully implicit method for time term and the quick scheme for momentum equation. The numerical method is compared with the experimental results by Wereley and Lueptow, and the results are very good agreement. As the results, TVF isn't appeared when Re is small because of the initial flow instability is disappear by effect of the centrifugal force and viscosity. The vortex size is from 0.8 to 1.1 for TVF at various $\eta$, and the traveling distance for wavy vortex have the critical traveling distance for each case.

  • The present paper is concerned with non-isothermal spherical Couette flow of Oldroyd-B fluid in the annular region between two concentric spheres. The inner sphere rotates with a uniform angular velocity while the outer sphere is kept at rest. Moreover, the two spherical boundaries are maintained at fixed temperature values. Hence, the fluid is effect by two heat sources; namely, the viscous heating and the temperature gradient between the two spheres. The viscoelasticity of the fluid is assumed to dominate the inertia such that the latter can be neglected. An approximate analytical solution of the energy and momentum equations is obtained through the expansion of the dynamical fields in power series of Nahme number. The analysis show that, the temperature variation due to the external source appears in the zero order solution and its effect extends to the fluid velocity distribution up to present second order. Viscous heating contributes in the first and second order solutions. In contrast to isothermal case, a first order axial velocity and a second order stream function fields has been appeared. Moreover, at higher orders the temperature distribution depends on the gap width between the two spheres. Finally, there exist a thermal distribution of positive and negative values depend on their positions in the domain region between the two spheres.

  • The objectives of the present study are to numerically and experimentally investigate the steady and pulsatile flow phenomena in the circular tubes, to quantitatively compare the flow characteristics of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids, and to find meaningful hemodynamic information through the flow analysis in the human blood vessels. The particle image velocimetry is adopted to visualize the flow fields in the circular tube. and the results from the particle image velocimetry are used to validate the results of the numerical analysis. In order to investigate the blood flow phenomena in the circular tube. constitutive equations, which are suitable to describe the rheological properties of the non-Newtonian fluids. are determined, and the steady and pulsatile momentum equations are solved by the finite volume prediction. The velocity vectors of the steady and pulsatile flow in the circular tube obtained by the particle image velocimetry arc in good agreement with those by the numerical analysis. For the given mass flow rate. the axial velocity profiles of the Newtonian and the non-Newtonian fluids appear differently. The pulsatile flow phenomena of the Newtonian and the non-Newtonian fluids are quite different from those of the steady flow.

  • The objective of the present study is to analyze the fluid flow with moving boundary using a finite element method. The algorithm uses a fractional step approach that can be used to solve low-speed flow with large density changes due to intense temperature gradients. The explicit Lax-Wendroff scheme is applied to nonlinear convective terms in the momentum equations to prevent checkerboard pressure oscillations. The ALE (Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian) method is adopted for moving grids. The numerical algorithm in the present study is validated for two-dimensional unsteady flow in a driven cavity and a natural convection problem. To extend the present numerical method to engine simulations, a piston-driven intake flow with moving boundary is also simulated. The density, temperature and axial velocity profiles are calculated for the three-dimensional unsteady piston-driven intake flow with density changes due to high inlet fluid temperatures using the present algorithm. The calculated results are in good agreement with other numerical and experimental ones.

  • In this study, aerodynamic characteristics of a horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) were evaluated and discussed in terms of measured data in existing onshore wind farm. Five wind turbines (T1, T2, T3, T4 and T5) were selected, and hub-height wind speed, $U_D$, wind turbine power output, P and turbine rotational speed, ${\Omega}$ data measured from these turbines were used for evaluation. In order to obtain characteristics of axial flow induction factor, a, power coefficient, $C_p$, thrust force coefficient, $C_T$, thrust force, T and tangential flow induction factor, a', Blade Element Momentum (BEM) theory was used. According to the results obtained, during a year, probability density of turbines at a rotational speed of 16.1 rpm was determined as approximately 45%. Optimum tip speed ratio was calculated to be 7.12 for most efficient wind turbine. Maximum $C_p$ was found to be 30% corresponding to this tip speed ratio.

  • This paper is concerned with the viscous interaction between rotor and stator. The viscous interaction is caused by wakes from upstream blades. The rotor cascade in the experiment was composed with five blades, and cylinders were placed to make the stator wakes and their locations were about 50 percent upstream of blade chord. The locations of cylinders were varied in the direction of cascade axis with 0, 12.5, 25, 50, and 75 percent of pitch length. The static pressure distributions on the blade surfaces and the velocity distributions in the cascade flow were measured. From the experimental result it was found that the value of velocity defect by a cylinder wake might vary depending on the wake position within the cascade but the value at the cascade exit approached to some constant value regardless of the difference of wake locus. The momentum defect at the downstream from the cascade and the pressure distribution on the blade surfaces showed that the wake flowing near the blade surfaces caused the decrease of lift and the increase of drag regardless of the disappearance of flow separation.

  • Experimental study on combustion characteristics of double swirl coaxial injectors has been conducted for the assessment of critical injector design parameters. A reusable, unielement thrust chamber has been fabricated with a water-cooled copper nozzle. Two principle design parameters, a swirl angle and a recess length, have been investigated through hot firing tests for the understanding of their effects on high pressure combustion. Clearly, both parameters considerably affect the combustion efficiency, dynamics and hydraulic characteristics of an injector. Internal mixing of propellants in a recess region increases combustion efficiency along with the increase of a pressure drop required for flowing the same amount of mass flow rates. It is concluded that pressure buildup due to flame can be released by the increase of LOx flow axial momentum or the reduction of a recess length. Dynamic pressure measurements of the thrust chamber show varied dynamic behaviors depending on injector configurations.
