Numerical simulations of rotating star clusters with 2 mass components

  • To understand the effect of the initial rotation for tidally bounded clusters with mass spectrum, we performed N-body simulations for the clusters with different degrees of initial rotation and compared to Fokker-Planck results. We confirmed that the cluster evolution is accelerated by the initial rotation as well as the mass spectrum. For the slowly rotating models, the time evolution of mass, energy and angular momentum show good agreements between N-body and Fokker-Planck calculations. On the other hand, for the rapidly rotating models, there are significant differences between two approaches at the beginning of the evolution. By investigating cluster shapes, we concluded that these differences are mainly due to secular instability that takes place for very rapidly rotating clusters. The shape of cluster for N-body simulations becomes tri-axial or even prolate, while the 2-dimensional Fokker-Planck simulation can treat only oblate type axisymmetric systems. We also founded that there is the angular momentum exchange from high mass to low mass.

  • It is well-known that high anisotropic characteristic of turbulent flow field is dominant inside tip leakage vortex. This anisotropic nature of turbulence invalidates the use of the conventional isotropic eddy viscosity turbulence model based on the Boussinesq assumption. In this study, to check whether an anisotropic turbulence model is superior to the isotropic ones or not, the results obtained from steady-state Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes simulations based on the RNG ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ and the Reynolds stress model in two test cases, such as a linear compressor cascade and a forward-swept axial-flow fan, are compared with experimental data. Through the comparative study of turbulence models, it is clearly shown that the Reynolds stress model, which can express the production term and body-force term induced by system rotation without any modeling, should be used to predict the complex tip leakage flow, including the locus of tip leakage vortex center, quantitatively.

  • In this paper, a CFD (Computational fluid dynamics) code, FLUENT is adopted to investigate accurate flow characteristics for a slipper bearing which is used swash plate type hydraulic axial piston pump. Static pressure and velocity distributions, and velocity vectors are plotted for different film thickness and slipper rotational velocity. In recess region, there exists a doughnut shaped vortex ring. The static pressure distributions are non-uniform and the flow fields are highly asymmetrical under bearing rotation. Therefore the numerical method adopted in this paper can be use in design of hydrostatic components and further studies are required.

  • The present study concerns a computational study of fully developed laminar flow of a Newtonian fluid through an eccentric annulus with a combined bulk axial flow and inner cylinder rotation. This study considers the identical flow geometry as in the calculation of Escudier et $al.^{(3)}$ An unexpected feature of the calculations for eccentricity ${\varepsilon}$)0.7 is the appearance of a second peak in the axial velocity, located in the narrowing gap. The distribution of the axial component of the surface shear stress has a maximum in the narrowing gap and a minimum in the widening gap.

전도성 환봉 이송용 동전기 차륜의 설계 (Design of an Electrodynamic Wheel for Transfer of Conductive Rod)

  • Instead of multi-phase ac current, the magnetic field travels spatially through mechanical rotation of permanent magnets at the electrodynamic wheel (EDW). Traveling of magnetic field generally leads to a generation of inductive force in the traveling direction. In this paper, we suggest a spiral EDW to travel the magnetic field in the axial direction of the conductive rod. So, it is possible to levitate and transfer the rod through multi-axial forces by the spiral EDW. However, physical dimensions of permanent magnets constituting EDW influence relative ratios between three-axial forces generated on the rod. Therefore, the sensitivity analysis for design parameters is performed using FEM analysis. The stable operation is verified experimentally.

On the seismic response of steel buckling-restrained braced structures including soil-structure interaction

  • This paper summarizes estimated seismic response results from three-dimensional nonlinear inelastic time-history analyses of some steel buckling-restrained braced (BRB) structures taking into account soil-structure interaction (SSI). The response results involve mean values for peak interstorey drift ratios, peak interstorey residual drift ratios and peak floor accelerations. Moreover, mean seismic demands in terms of axial force and rotation in columns, of axial and shear forces and bending moment in BRB beams and of axial displacement in BRBs are also discussed. For comparison purposes, three separate configurations of the BRBs have been considered and the aforementioned seismic response and demands results have been obtained firstly by considering SSI effects and then by neglecting them. It is concluded that SSI, when considered, may lead to larger interstorey and residual interstorey drifts than when not. These drifts did not cause failure of columns and of the BRBs. However, the BRB beam may fail due to flexure.

  • The behaviour of steel column at elevated temperature is significantly different than that at ambient temperature due to its changes in the mechanical properties with temperature. Reported literature suggests that steel column may become vulnerable when exposed to fire condition, since its strength and capacity decrease rapidly with temperature. The present study aims at investigating the lateral load resistance of non-insulated steel columns under fire exposure through finite element analysis. The studied parameters include moment-rotation behaviour, lateral load-deflection behaviour, stiffness and ductility of columns at different axial load levels. It was observed that when the temperature of the column was increased, there was a significant reduction in the lateral load and moment capacity of the non-insulated steel columns. Moreover, it was noted that the stiffness and ductility of steel columns decreased sharply with the increase in temperature, especially for temperatures above $400^{\circ}C$. In addition, the lateral load capacity and the moment capacity of columns were plotted against fire exposure time, which revealed that in fire conditions, the non-insulated steel columns experience substantial reduction in lateral load resistance within 15 minutes of fire exposure.

  • 본 연구에서는 일정한 각도의 분사를 갖는 평씨일(plain seal)에 대하여 각 인자들이 누수성능에 미치는 영향을 수치적으로 조사하였다. 인자들로는 축방향 레 이놀즈수, 축회전속도, 분사의 유입속도, 간극비, 분사의 위치 및 유입각 등이 고려되 었다.

The reliability of the nonradiologic measures of thoracic spine rotation in healthy adults

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the intertester reliability and validity of four nonradiologic measurements of thoracic spine rotation in healthy adults. Design: Descriptive laboratory study. Methods: This study was conducted on 20 male and 20 female university students aged between 19 and 26. To measure thoracic rotation, a goniometer, a bubble inclinometer, a dual inclinometer, and a smartphone application-clinometer were used. The measurement was performed twice for each device and the same measurement was performed by two examiners. The measurements were performed in the lumbar locked position. The arm in the direction of rotation was taken back and placed onto the back of the lumbar region. With right and left trunk rotation, the head was rotated together but remained in the center line so that the axial rotation was maintained. Both examiners performed the measuring procedures and directly handled the measuring instrument. All measurement results were recorded by the recorder. Results: The range of motion (ROM) of thoracic rotation in lumbar locked position for all four devices was 47 degrees. The intra-rater reliability estimates ranged from 0.738 to 0.906 (p<0.05). The inter-rater reliability estimates ranged from 0.736 to 0.853 (p<0.05). The goniometer, bubble inclinometer, dual inclinometer, and smartphone clinometer showed high validity (p<0.05). This result indicates that all four devices may be used by the same examiner and by other examiners obtaining follow-up measurement. Conclusions: The use of the goniometer, bubble inclinometer, dual inclinometer, and smartphone clinometer for measurements in the lumbar locked posture are reliable and valid nonradiologic measures of thoracic rotational ROM in healthy adults.

방사선수술치료계획 프로그램의 지시자 회전 오차 교정 기능 점검 (Verification of Indicator Rotation Correction Function of a Treatment Planning Program for Stereotactic Radiosurgery)

  • 목 적: 방사선수술에 사용되는 치료계획을 위한 정위 영상 획득 때 사용되는 표시기(indicator)의 회전에 의한 오차를 분석하고 이를 교정하는 소프트웨어의 기능을 점검하는 방법을 제시한다. 이 방법을 이용하여 상용 프로그램인 렉셀감마플랜의 회전 오차 기능을 점검한다. 대상 및 방법: 상용 프로그래밍 언어인 Interactive Data Language (version 5.5)를 이용하여 소프트웨어적으로 만든 정위 영상으로 가상 팬텀을 만들었다. 영상의 두께는 0.5 mm, 픽셀 크기 0.5 mm, 필드 크기 256 mm, 그리고 분해능은 $512{\times}512$이었다. 영상은 DICOM 3.0 표준을 따라서 렉셀감마플랜이 인식할 수 있도록 하였다. 회전 교정 기능 점검을 위하여 가상 팬텀의 중심에서 상하로 50 mm와 30 mm 떨어진 곳과 중앙에 위치한 횡단면 영상에 각각 50 mm 간격으로 측정점 9개를 만들어 총 45개의 측정점을 만들었다. 기준 가상 팬텀을 x, y, z축을 중심으로 각각 $3^{\circ}$ 회전한 영상, xy, yz, zx 축을 중심으로 각각 $3^{\circ}$씩 회전한 영상, xyz세 방향으로 모두 $3^{\circ}$씩 회전한 영상을 만들어서 회전에 의한 오차를 계산하고, 렉셀감마플랜의 교정 기능을 점검하였다. 결과: 가상 영상을 렉셀감마플랜에 입력하고 정위좌표를 정의할 때 영상에 의한 등록 오차는 $0.1{\pm}0.1mm$로써 방사선수술에서 요구하는 오차 내에 있었다. x, y, z축 중 1개 축을 중심으로 $3^{\circ}$ 회전할 때 가능한 최대 오차는 2.6mm, 2개 축을 중심으로 $3^{\circ}$씩 회전할 때는 3.7mm, 3개축 모두에 대해 $3^{\circ}$씩 회전할 때는 4.5 mm이다. 이에 대해 영상의 회전을 교정하여 렉셀감마플랜에서 측정한 측정점들의 변위는 1 개축을 중심으로 회전하였을 때 $0.1{\pm}0.1mm$, 2 개 축의 경우 $0.2{\pm}0.2mm$, 3개축의 경우 $0.2{\pm}0.2mm$로서 회전의 영향을 보정하는 기능이 정확하게 작동하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 결론: 방사선수술 치료계획 프로그램의 여러 소프트웨어적 기능을 점검하기 위한 가상 팬텀을 만들고 상용프로그램의 회전 오차 교정 기능을 점검한 결과 정확하게 작동하고 있음을 확인하였다. 본 연구에서 작성한 가상 팬텀은 치료계획 프로그램의 다른 여러 기능들을 점검하는 데도 사용될 수 있을 것이다.
