  • The selection of optimum parameters in electromagnetic design usually requires optimization of multimodal, non linear functions. This leads to extensive calculations which pose a huge inconvenience in the design process. This paper proposes a novel algorithm for dealing efficiently with this issue. Through the use of contour line concept coupled with Kriging, the algorithm finds out all the peaks in the problem domain with as few function calls as possible. The proposed algorithm is applied to the magnet shape optimization of an axial flux permanent magnet synchronous machine and the cogging torque was reduced to 79.8% of the initial one.

  • Permanent-magnet (PM) synchronous generator is feasible for use with a wind turbine, because the generator for wind power requires variable-speed generation, light weight, and high torque. In this paper, basic design and construction of an axial-flux permanentmagnet generator with power output at 60 [Hz], 300 [r/min] for wind energy system is introduced. Finite-element method (FEM) is applied to analyze generator performance. In order to save time, equivalent analysis model is developed. The performance of the proposed generator at no-load and resistive load are compared, and power output and voltage at various speed and loads are compared as well. The results of FE analysis show that this PM generator is a useful solution for small-scale wind-turbine applications.

  • In this paper, control & design of AFPM Motor for Electric Vehicle is presented. Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Motors without Core are designed by numerical approach which is based on mechanical concept. This procedure consists of two parts: one is rotor magnet, the other is stator coil. And to evaluate the performance of target motor, various points like as BEMF and output characteristics are considered in this paper. Also simulation results & Experiments are provided to prove the novel motor design.

  • Permanent-magnet generators have been used for wind turbines for many years. This paper deals with the AFPM(Axial - Flux Permanent Magnet) Generator with a high power-to-weight ratio, dedicated for small wind turbines. The designed and constructed generator as a prototype in this study is a slotless type AFPM Generator with Neodymium-Iron-Boron magnet rotor. Based on that construction, a magnetic circuit analysis of the generator is carried out. Some important equations covering its characteristics and construction are derived and its magnetic and electrical characteristics are investigated.

  • NdFeB로 만들어진 permanent magnet dc driver는 많은 분야에서 사용된다. 그중 소형 disk type servo driver는 컴퓨터의 hard disk driver나 floppy driver등과 같은 소형기기의 구동용으로 사용된다. 기존의 dc drive는 coil를 감아 winding으로 사용한다. 만들어진 driver에는 coper printed multilayer winding을 사용하였다. 이 논문에서는 thin film multilayer winding의 제조방법, 특성에 관하여 논한다. 또한 dc driver의 commutation를 위해 사용되는 hallsensor 대신에 비 선형 특성의 MR sensor를 선형화시켜 driver의 commutation에 사용하였으며 이렇게 만들어진 소형 driver의 rpm, torque등의 특성을 연구하였다.

  • For the application into a 1 kWh flywheel energy storage system(FESS), this paper presents the design scheme of radial and axial hybrid magnetic bearings which use bias fluxes generated by permanent magnets. In particular, the axial hybrid magnetic bearing is newly proposed in this paper, in which a permanent magnet is arranged in axial direction so that it can support the rotor weight as well as provide a bias flux for axial magnetic bearing. Such hybrid magnetic bearings consume very low power, compared with conventional electromagnetic bearings. In this paper, to stably support a 140 kg flywheel rotor without contact, design process is explained in detail, and magnetic circuit analysis and three-dimensional finite element analysis are carried out to determine the design parameters and predict the performance of the magnetic bearings.

  • This paper describes the dynamic analysis method and the characteristics of rotating type transverse flux motors excited by permanent magnets; the machine is called TFRM in here. A prototype of TFRM, made by combing soft magnetic composite (SMC) core, is introduced first, then the magneto static and dynamic analysis methods are explained. Analysis results are compared with measured results, and finally the effects of the proposed dynamic analysis method and the characteristics of TFRM are discussed.

Design and Analysis of a Material Efficient Sinusoidal Consequent-Pole High-Speed Axial-Flux Machine

  • This paper presents a high-speed axial-flux machine which utilizes the idea of sinusoidal shaped pole combined with a consequent iron-pole. The target of the proposed machine is the cost reduction of the relatively expensive Samarium-Cobalt (SmCo) permanent magnet (PM) material and the torque per PM volume improvement by using sinusoidal consequent-pole rotor. The effectiveness of the proposed machine is validated by comparing it with conventional consequent-pole and with conventional PM machines using 3-D finite element method (FEM) simulations. The comparison and analysis is done in terms of back electro-motive force (back-EMF) harmonic contents, torque per PM volume and torque ripple characteristics. The simulation results show that the proposed machine is suitable and cost-effective for high-speed and high torque per PM volume applications. Furthermore, due to the consequent pole, the magnetic flux saturation and the overload current torque-capability are also presented and discussed in the paper.

  • In this paper, the effect of permanent magnet overhang structure on the characteristics in Brushless DC motor has analyzed quantitatively. We classified the overhang structure as symmetric and asymmetric. 3D equivalent magnetic circuit network (EMCN) method which uses the permeance as the distributive variable is used for the efficient analysis of magnetic field. The overhang effect which increases the linkage flux at the stator is verified by comparison between overhang and no overhang structure. In addition, it is known that no load back electro motive force (EMF) is also increased due to the overhang effect. In case of asymmetric overhang structure, the ratio effect of the upper to lower overhang length on the magnetic forces is analyzed. Form the analysis results, the variation of the asymmetric overhang ratio has a significant effect on the axial magnetic force except the radial and tangential magnetic forces. The validity of the analysis results is also clarified by comparison between calculated results and measured ones such as back EMF and cogging torque.

Design and Analysis of AFPM Coreless Motor for Electric Scooter

  • This paper deals with the design and the characteristic analysis of a coreless axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) motor. Because a direct-drive wheel motor is easily derived from it, the AFPM motor is very suitable for application in an electric scooter. Compared to a conventional motor of the same size and weight, the AFPM motor is proven to have more power and torque per unit weight. In this paper, an AFPM coreless motor with a double-sided rotor disk equipped with Nd-Fe-B rare earth magnets is designed and a prototype of the motor is manufactured, which will be properly applied for the low-speed, and high-torque direct drive required for the electric scooter. The manufactured prototype of the motor has a rating of 300W, 510rpm, 5.6Nm, and 85% efficiency.
