In this study a general Galerkin FE lubrication analysis method is utilized to analyze the complex lubrication performance of a spiral groove seal, which is being designed and developed for a high-speed flying object application operating at a high-speed of over 50,000 rpm. As at the equilibrium seal clearance the axial stiffness of the seal is predicted to have almost such a constant high value of $1.04\times10^8\;N/m$ regardless of a rotating speed, the seal is expected to maintain a stable thickness of lubrication film under a certain external excitation acting. Also, as even at an ultra high-speed of 80,000 rpm the axial damping of the seal is shown to have a rotatively high value of 5,775 N-s/m, the dynamic stability of the seal system at the axial degree of freedom is assured well enough.

An experimental analysis using three-dimensional laser Doppler velocimetry(LDV) measurement and computational analysis using the Reynolds stress model in FLUENT are conducted to give a clear understanding of the effect of blade loading on the structure of tip leakage flow in a forward-swept axial-flow fan operating at the maximum efficiency condition ($\Phi$=0.25) and two off-design conditions ($\Phi$=0.21 and 0.30). As the blade loading increases, the onset position of the rolling-up of tip leakage flow moves upstream and the trajectory of tip leakage vortex center is more inclined toward the circumferential direction. Because the casing boundary layer becomes thicker and the mixing between the through-flow and the leakage jet with the different flow direction is enforced, the streamwise vorticity decays more fast with the blade loading increasing. A distinct tip leakage vortex is observed downstream of the blade trailing edge at $\Phi$=0.30, but it is not observed at $\Phi$=0.21 and 0.25.

The experiment using three-dimensional laser Dopperr velocimetery (LDV) measurements and the computation using the Reynolds stress model of the commercial code, FLUENT, were conducted to give a clear understanding on the structure of tip leakage flow in a forward-swept axial-flow fan operating at the maximum efficiency condition. The tip leakage vortex was generated near the position of the minimum wall static pressure, which was located at approximately 12% chord downstream from the leading edge of blade suction side, and developed along the centerline of the pressure trough within the blade passages. A reverse flow between the blade tip region and the casing, induced by tip leakage vortex, acted as a blockage on the through-flow. As a result, high momentum flux was observed below the tip leakage vortex. As the tip leakage vortex proceeded to the aft part of the blade passage, the strength of tip leakage vortex decreased due to the strong interaction with the through-flow and casing boundary layer, and the diffusion of tip leakage vortex caused by high turbulence. In comparison with LDV measurement data, the computed results predicted the complex viscous flow patterns inside the tip region, including the locus of tip leakage vortex center, in a reliable level.
The purpose of this study is to prevent the stick, scuffing, scratch between piston and cylinder, is to contribute the piston design such as piston profile, clearance by calculating reaction force by over-lap of piston skirt, as measuring the temperature distributions of cylinder wall. The experiment has been peformed to obtain data during actual engine operation. Temperature gradient in peripheral and axial distributions of cylinder wall according to torque and speed of engine were measured by use of an 800cc class gasoline engine. The results obtained are summarized as follows ; 1) The temperature of cylinder wall at TDC was about $50{\sim}75^{\circ}C$ higher than temperature of cooling water. 2) The rear side temperature of top dead center was $141^{\circ}C$(1/4 load) in axial distribution, whereas the rear side of midway position temperature was $98^{\circ}C$. 3) The temperature of cylinder wall increased in according to rising temperature of cooling water. 4) The thrust side temperature of cylinder wall was about $15^{\circ}C$ in all load test. 5) The rear side temperature of top dead center was $159^{\circ}C$ (1/2 load) in peripheral distribution, it was about $39^{\circ}C$ higher than thrust side temperature.
In meeting the technical needs for deepwater conditions and overcoming the shortfalls of single-layer pipes for deepwater applications, pipe-in-pipe (PIP) systems have been developed. While, for PIP pipelines directly laid on the seabed or with partial embedment, one of the primary service risks is lateral buckling. The critical axial force is a key factor governing the global lateral buckling response that has been paid much more attention. It is influenced by global imperfections, submerged weight, stiffness, pipe-soil interaction characteristics, et al. In this study, Finite Element Models for imperfect PIP systems are established on the basis of 3D beam element and tube-to-tube element in Abaqus. A parameter study was conducted to investigate the effects of these parameters on the critical axial force and post-buckling forms. These parameters include structural parameters such as imperfections, clearance, and bulkhead spacing, pipe/soil interaction parameter, for instance, axial and lateral friction properties between pipeline and seabed, and load parameter submerged weight. Python as a programming language is been used to realize parametric modeling in Abaqus. Some conclusions are obtained which can provide a guide for the design of PIP pipelines.

A simple model of the tip leakage flow models of the rotor downstream flow is developed, based on Lakshminarayana's theoretical concept on the tip clearance flow and the experimental data published in open literature. And new spanwise distribution models of deviation angle and pressure loss coefficient due to the tip leakage flow are formulated for use in association with the streamline curvature method as a through flow analysis. Combining these new models and previous deviation and loss models due to secondary flow, a robust streamline curvature method is established for flow analysis of single-stage, subsonic axial turbines with wide ranges of turning angle, aspect ratio and blading type. At the exit from rotor rows, the flow variables are mixed radially according to a spanwise transport equation. The proposed streamline curvature method is tested against a forced vortex type turbine as well as a free vortex type one. The results show that the spanwise variations of flow angle, axial velocity and loss coefficients at rotor exit are predicted with good accuracy, being comparable to a steady three-dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis. This simple and fast flow analysis is found to be very useful for the turbine design at the initial design phase.
Automobiles should be designed to meet the requirements and standards for the protections of passengers in a car accident. One of safety factors is an absorbing capacity in collision. Many vehicles have been designed based on the criterion of the absorbing capacity. Therefore a controller has been developed in order to control and increase the absorbing capacity of impact energy in automobile collision. The capacity of impact energy will be improved regardless of vehicular-structure members and shapes. An air-pressure horizontal impact tester for crushing has been built up for the evaluation of energy absorbing characteristics in collision. Influence of height, thickness and clearance in the controller have been considered to predict and control the energy absorbing capacity. Aluminum alloy (Al) tubes (30,39,44 m in inner dia. and 0.8, 1.0, 1.2 m in thickness) are tested by axial loading. The energy absorbing capacity of Al tubes have been estimated in cases of with-controller and without-controller. respectively based on height. thickness, clearance of an controller.
In this study a general Galerkin FE lubrication analysis method was utilized to analyze the complex lubrication performance of a spiral groove seal having an additional inner circular groove, which was designed for a chemical process mixer operating at a low speed of the maximum 500 rpm. Equilibrium seal clearance analyses under varying outer pressure revealed that the seal maintains a certain levitation seal clearance under the outer pressure of more than about 1.5 bar, regardless of a rotating speed. Also, under the normal outer pressure of 11 bar, the axial stiffness of the seal was predicted to have a high value of more than 7.0 e + 07 N/m, regardless of a rotating speed and thereby, the seal is expected to maintain a stable thickness of lubrication film under a certain external excitation acting. A seal levitation test rig was designed and constructed. Experimental results at 500 rpm agreed well with analytical predictions and the applied lubrication analysis method was verified.
This paper discusses a series of procedures and results for designing the gear part of a fuel transfer pump for an aircraft, developed as an independent technology for the first time in Korea. A gear pump type is selected because the design requirements of the fuel transfer pump are met by a gear pump with a characteristics of less leakage inside than a vane pump with superior overall performance. The gear housing is designed with suitable clearance, considering the outer diameter of the gear, which is the main factor on which the flow can be determined. Additionally, the calculation of the required hydraulic and axial force for the motor to drive the fuel transfer pump was performed.

The influence of the tip clearance upon the cavitation inception were investigated by experiments for ducted rotors having different tip clearances The axial and tangential mean velocities around the ducted rotors were measured using an L.D.V. system to investigate the correlation between tip vertex cavitation inception and hub vortex cavitation. Observation results for tip vortex cavitation and hub vortex cavitation show good agreement in trend with the analysis results of velocity measurement. An optimum tip clearance for ducted rotor was selected to delay the tip vortex cavitation.
