  • Researchers examined elementary school children's experiences and the way that their mothers scolded them. In their writings, the children reported that their mothers under-estimated them, and assumed that they were not able to do anything by themselves. This reflected on the way that the mothers disciplined their children. The mothers were not a good model of proper behavior and did not treat the siblings fairly. The mothers were directive and valued results over effort. The children confessed that they felt suicidal, miserable and wanted to run away from home. They had a love-hate relationship with their mothers. They had to hide their real feelings and show love and respect towards their mothers. They had conflicts in dealing with these feelings. Their inability to show their real feelings and their dependency on their mothers made them return home, much like a boomerang. As a result, the children learned how to respond quickly in avoiding scolding situations. Furthermore, they learned the most important lesson; that it is all right to be abusive as long as it is for their or anybody else's own good.

  • The current study analyzed the home range size of the Common Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) by observation using the natural markings in the suburban area of Busan from December 2009 to May 2010. In all, 26 individual kestrels were observed in the study area, of which 14 individual kestrels were frequently observed (more than five times) and 12 were observed less frequently (less than five times). Mean home range sizes of the 14 frequently observed kestrels were estimated using two different methods (minimum convex polygon (MCP) method and fixed kernel (FK) method): 34.49 ha(2.74-163.96 ha) by 100% MCP, 41.35 ha(3.54-99.02 ha) by the 95% FK, 14.33 ha(0.20-31.57 ha) by the 75% FK and 5.75 ha(0.52-14.74 ha) by the 50% FK. The mean home range size was larger for males than for females estimated at 51.50 ha(15.04-163.96 ha) and 11.80ha(2.74-24.48 ha), respectively, by the 100 % MCP method and 8.02 ha(2.38-14.74 ha) and 2.72 ha (0.52-4.28 ha), respectively, by the 50 % Fixed Kernel method. The home range sizes by sexes in breeding pairs differed during the wintering and breeding seasons; the sizes decreased among females but increased among males during the breeding season. Such differences of home range sizes between sexes could be attributed to parental role division during the breeding season. Females stay in the nest or next to it during laying, incubating, and feeding activities, and males go far away from their nest sites to forage areas for their fledglings for most of the breeding period.

  • This research is intended to understand the housework performance of husbands that live away from their family and the human resources that may have effects while they do the housework. The research has been done by the interviews with twelve selected males who are married and live away from their family The results are as follows: First, the amount of time that the interviewees spend on the housework is less than thirty minutes a day. As for the clothing life area, they seem to depend on washers, cleaners and their wives for their laundry, except for six interviewees that wash their socks by hands. As for their food life area, they either have quick breakfast or do not have breakfast, and they go to a restaurant more than twice a day. Therefore, they tend to depend on services, and they only make the bed and clean the house. Second, affective components and cognitive components are the factors that make their housework difficult while physical components do not have any great effect. These two components have a great deal of effect on the interviewees'clothing related housework and food related housework.

  • The study examined work and family life of married women employed in a manufacturing industry. Data were gathered from the use of face-to-face interview method from a sample of 230 married working women. The major findings of this study can be summarized as follows: (1) Most of the respondents found the work repetitive and unappealing, with the double burden of a paid work and housework. Thus, it is necessary for the government to implement social policies for married working women, such as establishment of various child care centers, part-time jobs, and dissemination of egalitarian sex-role attitudes. (2) More than half of the respondents were born in rural areas and immigrated to the urban sectors, forming a nuclear family structure. Most of these women were married with love, but some of them could not have a marriage ceremony because of the economic reasons. Thus, it may be necessary to increase the service centers to offer a free marital ceremony. (3) About 30% of the respondents answered they left their preschool aged children unattended, after dismissing from a kindergarden on a private institution. It was shown that working women, even though they were in charge of child-rearing, did not have an effective mechanism to control or protect their children while they were away from home. Most of them frequently used material compensations from their children in order to make up their absence at home. (4) It was found that the strategy for working women to decrease a dual-role conflict is to make a hierachy on the work they to do and to do only basic housework for everyday life and to do the rest of work on a off-day.

  • The purpose of this study was to understanding the intrinsic meanings and aesthetic characteristics expressed by current fashion trends in neckties and to develop a new and unique fashion design for neckties. This study used precedent studies and related literatures to review the changes in neckties and the types of knots used over time. The findings were then verified by photographs from fashion magazines and collections from the 1990s. The results of this study are as follows. First, neckties, generally regarded as a symbol of masculinity, are often mixed with other men's or women's clothing items rather than being worn by themselves, and they provide an androgynous characteristic in women's fashion. This transcendence of femininity or masculinity reflects the human desire to be a more perfect being by sharing each others characteristics, and it can be seen in contemporary beauty trends. Second, neckties have been transformed into scarves, waist belts, front-fly omaments, and so forth. They are used to express a new and sensational sense, the sense of deconstructionism, by breaking away from stereotypes and changing the shape of neckties atypically.

  • From 1990 to 1997 Home Care Education Programs have been offered at 11 Home Care Education Institutes. But there have been no revisions in the program. Especially in the clinical practicum, the Ministry of Health and Welfare proposed 248 hours as 'Family Nursing and Practice'. But each of institutes has developed their own program, and the clinical practicum is very different. Institutions for home care practice have been very limited and even now only 40 hospitals started home care in the second demonstration project. A few community-based institutions have also been offering home care services. This study was conducted to analyze home care clinical practicum offered at Y university, and plan for a revised home care clinical practicum. Y university clinical practicum was revised to include 'visits to community institutions', 'laboratory practice', 'hospital practice', 'discharge planning and home care practice', and 'home care specialty practice'. The results of the evaluation and plan for a revision are as follows: 'Visits to community institutions' is a practice that helps the students understand community resources which are available to home care nurses, and as an orientation to institutions for practice. 'Laboratory practice' is to used to improve nursing skills that are applicable to home care. Problems that the students identified in the laboratory practice were 'lack of opportunity for individual practice', and 'inadequate theoretical preparation for practice'. To address these problems the basic nursing skills laboratory was open and could be used freely by the home care students, and practice could be done after the theoretical lectures. 'Hospital practice' is a practicum in which the students apply nursing skills to patients and to obtain assessment skills for discharge planning. Using a preceptorship, five days for hospital practice should be offered. 'Discharge planning and home care practice' was done at Wonju Christian Hospital. This institute is too far away that this practice should be provided at different institutions as soon as it is possible to contract with home care institutions. Patients groups in different home care institutions are very different, so the 'Home care specialty practice' should be done after analyzing patient groups and choosing specialty areas. These areas are' care of patients with respiratory dysfunction', 'care of patients with neurologic dysfunction', 'care of cancer patients', 'care of patients on dialysis', and 'wound care'. This practice should be offered with a preceptorship, so preceptors, clinical directors, and students should meet for home visit orientation.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the supporting-attitude type of the eldest son and his wife living seperately from his parents. This research focused on the various degree of intergenerational solidarity between the eldest son and his wife and his parents. For this study, the supporting-attitude types were classified into 4 types: these combine 2 types of residence (living together with the parents or living seperately from the parents) with 2 types of financial support (with with-out financial support0. The concept of intergenerational solidarity, comprises three elements: objective solidarity, subjective solidarity (attachment and conflict), and consensual solidarity (filial obligation). The subjects of this study were 166 couples living seperately from son's parents in Seoul city. The data were analyzed by multiple discriminant analyses, one way ANOVA's, and the paired t-test. The results of this study are as follows; 1. Although the majority of the eldest sons live now away from the parents home, they expect to eventually live together with and support their parents financially. The majority of the wives, however, do not want to live together with their husbands' parents even though expecting to support them financially. 2. According to the discriminant analyses, the supporting-attitude types of the eldest sons were discriminated by attachment and conflict, and those of their wives by conflict and obligation. 3. There were significant difference between supporting-attitude types in terms of intergenerational solidarity. In general, the couples expecting to live together with the parents reported a higher degree of attachment, a stronger sense of obligation, and a lower degree of conflict than the couples expecting to live seperately from the parents. 4. Significant differences between the husbands and the wives were found in attachment, obligation, and conflict. While the husbands showed higher attachment and obligation than their wives, the wives showed higher conflict than the husbands. No significant difference, however, was found between the couples in objective solidarity.
