The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in body fat distribution between normal and obese subjects and the relationship between risk factors(fasting blood sugar, blood pressure. fasting serum lipids) and obesity. Measurements of height. weight, skinfold thickness. body circumference. percent body fat. blood pressure, fasting blood sugar and serum lipids were made and a dietary survey was performed on 120(Males 61. Females 59) adult subjects. 1) Among the female subjects, the obese group appeared to have significantly higher centrality of body fat than the normal group. Obese groups of both sexes appeared with higher blood pressure than normal groups. No differences in daily average nutrient intake, fasting blood sugar and fasting serum lipids concentrations were observed between obese and normal groups. 2) In males. the serum triglyceride concentration was observed to have a significantly positive correlation to body weight, body mass index and body circumference, additionally concentrations of total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol were observed to have significantly positive correlations to the skinfold thickness. but the ratio of HDL-cholesterol/total cholesterol was observed to be significantly negatively correlated to the skinfold thickness. 3) In females. the obese group consumed about 47% of total energy intake at lunch. whereas the normal group consumed about 29% . The food habit score of males appeared to be negatively related to body weight, percent ideal body weight. But the food habit score of females appeared to be negatively related to percent body fat(r=-0.32, p<0.05) .
The purpose of this study was to compare the nutrient intakes, blood pressure, and blood lipids in Korean adults according to BMI. Subjects were recruited and divided into three groups according to BMI, which included normal group (18.5$\leq$BMI<23), overweight group (23$\leq$BMI<25), obese group (25$\leq$BMI). The average age, height, weight, BMI of the subjects were 53.1years, 159.2cm, 54.5kg, 21.4kg/$m^2$ for normal group, 52.3years, 159.4cm, 61.4kg, 24.1kg/$m^2$ for overweight group, 55.9years, 158.7cm, 68.5kg, 27.2kg/$m^2$ for obese group, respectively. There were not significant differences in energy and food intakes by BMI groups. The blood pressure, serum cholesterol, serum triglyceride, serum LDL-cholesterol, and AI were significantly increased and serum HDL-cholesterol decreased with increment of BMI. The age and BMI were significantly positively correlated with blood pressure and serum lipids except HDL-cholesterol. There was significantly negative correlation between percentage of protein energy intake and AI. To summarize these results, energy, nutrient, and food intakes were not significantly correlated with BMI, and blood pressure and blood lipids increased with increment of BMI. Further systematic study of relation among nutrient intakes including various life factors, BMI, blood pressure, and blood lipid profile is needed.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Urbanization and lifestyle changes have resulted in nutrition transition. Over-nutrition causes obesity increase, although malnutrition still exists. This phenomenon is called a double burden of malnutrition (DBM). This study was conducted to confirm the existence of DBM and to investigate the dietary factors related to DBM in Indonesian adults. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Data for the subjects (51 men and 89 women) who are the adults resided in Malang, Indonesia were collected between July 17 and August 14, 2017, by using questionnaire. Height, weight, waist and hip circumference, blood pressure, blood glucose, total cholesterol, and hemoglobin were also measured for the subjects. RESULTS: The average age of the subjects was 47.2 years. The average height, weight, and body mass index for men were 160.08 cm, 62.6 kg and $25.45kg/m^2$, respectively, and those for women were 148.74 cm, 58.09 kg, and $26.21kg/m^2$, respectively. Of the subjects, 3.6% were underweight, 24.3% were normal or healthy weight, while 72.2% were overweight and obese. Analysis of the dietary intakes revealed high for cereal (7.73 points), but very low for milk (0.25 points) and fruits (0.51 points). Dietary diversity was very few overall (< 5). The occurrence of both anemia (23.6%) and chronic diseases such as hypertension (57.1%), diabetes (12.1%), and hypercholesterolemia (3.6%) was considerably high. The existence of DBM was confirmed by 16.4% of the subjects. DBM was observed significantly higher in women than in men. Dietary diversity and DBM occurrence were inversely correlated. On average, the number of chronic diseases was 1.08 in men and 1.79 in women. Dietary diversity inversely affected systolic blood pressure. CONCLUSIONS: DBM existed in adults in Malang, Indonesia due to inadequate dietary intakes, and a high rate of chronic diseases.
There is some evidence that soy isoflavone has beneficial effects on the concentration of blood lipids. In this study, we investigated habitual isoflavone intake levels and the relation among dietary isoflavone intake, blood pressure, and blood lipids of adult men (n = 149) and women (n = 205). Anthropometric measurements including blood pressure, dietary in-take assessment using 24-hour recall method, and biochemical assessment using blood were conducted. The average age, height, weight, and BMI were 54.7 years, 168.5 cm, 67.3 kg, and 24.5 $kg/m^2$ for men and 53.9 years, 153.8 cm, 59.2 kg, and 25.0 $kg/m^2$ for women, respectively. The mean daily intakes of total food and energy were 1219.1 g and 1740.9 kcal for men and 1071.3 g and 1432.6 kcal for women, respectively. The mean daily isoflavones (daidzein + genistein) intake of men and women were 20.0 mg and 14.2 mg, respectively. Blood pressure of the subjects was 128.3/75.5 mmHg for men and 124.1/73.7 mmHg for women. Serum lipids of men and women were 180.2 and 184.9 mg/dL for total cholesterol, 160.8 and 137.6 mg/dL for triglyceride, 41.5 and 44.7 mg/dL for HDL-cholesterol, 106.6 and 112.7 mg/dL for LDL-cholesterol, and 3.5 and 3.3 for atherogenic index, respectively. Serum triglyceride and atherogenic index of men were significantly higher than those of women. In men, isoflavone intake and the level of total serum cholesterol were negatively (p < 0.05) correlated, after adjusted age. In women, there were significant correlations between isoflavone intake and blood pressure (systolic and diastolic), after adjusted age (p < 0.05). Based on these results, we concluded that higher isoflavone intake seemed to be related to a better lipid profile in men and lower blood pressure in women. But more epidemiological studies and controlled clinical trials would help to confirm the optimal amount required for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease.
The purpose of this study was to estimate coffee consumption and it's relationship to blood pressure and blood lipid profiles in Korean adult men and women. Antheropometrics, dietary intake by 24-hour recall, and serum lipid profiles were measured in 354 subjects. The average subject ages for the age ranges of $20{\sim}49$, $50{\sim}64$, and over 65 years, were 39.7, 57.5, and 70.6 years for the men, and 40.7, 56.9, and 70.9 years for the women, respectively. Mean height and weight were significantly higher in the men and decreased with increasing of age. Thirty percent and 28% of the men and women, respectively, consumed coffee. The proportions of coffee consuming subjects in the age rangers of $20{\sim}49$ years(34.9%) and $50{\sim}64$ years(35.6%) were significantly higher than in the group over 65 years(11.5%). The mean daily intakes of food and energy were showed the same results according to sex and age. Mean daily coffee intake was not significantly different between the men and women, but it was significantly lower in the over 65 age group. Systolic blood pressure was significantly higher in the men and increasing age. The atherogenic index was significantly higher in the $20{\sim}49$ year-old men, and in the women over 65 years. There were no significant correlations among coffee consumption, blood pressure, and the serum lipid profile. In conclusion, the daily coffee consumption by adult men and women, with the exception of the elderly, was $50{\sim}90m{\ell}$, and it was not significantly correlated to blood pressure or blood lipids.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of general, health, and alcohol-related characteristics on blood pressure and stress according to the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT). Methods: This was a descriptive study. From participants in the 2013 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 319 participants who responded to the survey when they were attending college or university were selected. Data were analyzed using the SPSS Win 23.0 program for composite sample data reflecting the composite design elements of stratification, colonization, and weighting. Results: Mean age of onset of alcohol drinking was $17.91{\pm}0.16$ years, the average AUDIT score was $7.56{\pm}0.41$, and 25 (9.1%) participants fell into the high-risk drinking group. In the high-risk AUDIT group, systolic blood pressure was influenced by age, gender, institution, health status, body mass index, and suicidal ideation, and the explanatory power of the model ($R^2$) was 75.0%. For diastolic blood pressure, institution and health status were the influential factors, and $R^2$ was 66.2%. Predictors of stress were health status, depression, and the age of onset of drinking, and $R^2$ was 57.2%. Conclusion: It was confirmed that the explanatory power of the variables in models of systolic and diastolic blood pressure and stress is greater in those with higher scores on AUDIT.
This study was done to investigate the health-related habits, dietary intakes and serum lipid levels in overweight and obese women by body mass index(BMI). Subjects were 137 pre-menopausal women aged 19 to 49 years. They were divided by 3 groups, overweight($23{\leqq}BMI<25$), obese($25{\leqq}BMI<30$) and morbidly obese($BMI{\geq}30$) according to their BMI. Body composition was determined by bioelectrical impedance analysis(BIA) method. Dietary intakes were examined by 3-day record method and nutrient intakes were analyzed by the Computer Aided Nutritional analysis program for professionals(CAN-pro 3.1). Serum lipid levels were measured using automatic biochemical analyzer(Selectra E). The average age, height weight and BMI of subjects were 31.7 years old, 159.3cm, 69.4kg, and $27.4kg/m^2$, respectively. Their average consumption of energy were 1712kca1 and 86.4% of estimated energy requirement(EER). Their mom ratio of carbohydrate:protein:fat was 55.2:14.6:30.2. Particularly, the fat consumption of subjects tended to be elevated with increasing BMI. There was no significant difference in nutrient intakes among 3 groups. But the mom intakes of Ca, Fe, vitamin C and Na of all the subjects were 70.1%, 81.2%, 75.7% of recommended intake(RI) and 258.9% of adequate intake(AI), respectively, The intakes of vegetables and seaweeds were significantly higher in morbidly obese group while the intake of fruits was higher in overweight group compared to the other groups. Serum lipid analysis showed that there were no significant differences in the levels of total cholesterol, triglyceride and LDL-cholesterol among the groups. But the serum HDL-cholesterol level of the overweight group was significantly higher than that of the other groups. LDL-/HDL-cholesterol ratio and AI index were significantly higher in the morbidly obese group compared to the other groups. In addition, The systolic blood pressure of morbidly obese group was significantly higher compared to the other groups. Overall data suggest that morbidly obese women have to more concern about reducing systolic blood pressure and nm lipid levels by decreasing their fat consumption and salt intakes as well as loosing body fat. In addition, all the subjects participated in this study have to be careful about their meals and health-related behaviors in order to prevent obesity-related chronic diseases.
Background and Objectives : There were few literatures about the relationship between upper airway disorders and cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension, although an association between impaired lower respiratory function and cardiovascular alterations was often reported. Our purpose was to assess the relationships between chronic sinusitis and hypertension. Materials and Methods : Three hundred subjects with bilateral chronic sinusitis who underwent functional endoscopic sinus surgery between 2015and 2017 were evaluated. Six hundred forty subjects without any nasal diseases were enrolled as a control group. Blood pressure and body mass index (BMI) were measured using a standardized method, and subjects were asked about current use of any antihypertensive medication, history of diabetes, smoking and alcohol drinking habits.Sinusitis group was assessed by nasal endoscopic examination, paranasal sinus CT scan and allergy test. Results : Average systolic and diastolic blood pressures were statistically significantly higher in subjects with sinusitis than control group. Chronic rhinosinusitis was associated with a 1.415-fold (95% confidence interval 1.053-1.930) increased hazard of hypertension after multivariate adjustment. Conclusions : These results suggest that sinusitis is associated with high blood pressure. Therefore patients with sinusitis may need special attention for blood pressure control. Further studies need to be performed to elucidate the pathogenesis behind such associations.
