  • Three experiments were conducted to determine the effects of a sorghum-specific enzyme system, derived from an Aspergillus niger and Bacillus subtilis fermentation extract (carbohydrase activity of 1,650 $\alpha$-amylase units and cellulase activity of 30 fibrinolytic units/mL), on growth performance of finishing pigs. In Exp. 1,192 pigs (average initial BW of 46.1 kg) were fed sorghum-based diets without or with 360 mL of enzyme system per ton of sorghum in a 78 d growth assay. For d 0 to 39, gain/feed was improved (p<0.03) with enzyme supplementation, but ADG was not affected (p>0.15). For d 39 to 78 and overall (d 0 to 78), ADG, gain/feed, and digestibilities of DM and N were not affected (p>0.13) by enzyme supplementation. Backfat thickness, fat-free lean index, and scores for stomach keratinization and ulcers also were not affected (p>0.15) by the dietary treatments. In Exp. 2,168 pigs (average initial BW of 58.4 kg) were fed diets without or with 150, 300, or 450 mL/ton of the same enzyme system used in Exp. 1. Adding as much as 450 mL enzyme system / ton of sorghum did not affect (p>0.15) ADG or gain/feed for d 0 to 29 of the growth assay. However, during d 29 to 63, ADG increased by 11% (linear effect, p<0.02) and gain/feed increased by 10% (linear effect, p<0.06) as enzyme concentration was increased from none to 450 mL/ton of sorghum. For the overall period (d 0 to 63), ADG tended to increase (p<0.08) with enzyme supplementation, but gain/feed and digestibilities of DM and N were not affected (p>0.14). Carcass characteristics (dressing percentage, backfat thickness, and fat free lean index) also were not affected (p>0.20) by addition of the enzyme system. In Exp. 3,176 pigs (average initial BW of 46.7 kg) were fed diets without or with 450, 900, or 1,350 mL/ton of the same enzyme system used in Exp. 1 and 2 in a 71 d growth assay. Adding up to 1,350 mL/ton of enzyme had no effects (p>0.15) on ADG, gain/feed, digestibilities of DM and N, and carcass characteristics (dressing percentage, backfat thickness, and fat-free lean index). In conclusion, finishing pigs fed diets with a sorghum-specific enzyme system showed some positive trends for improved growth performance, but those effects were not large and (or) consistent.

  • The protective effects of egg yolk atibodies obtained from chickens immunized with fimbrial antigens from ETEC 987P were evaluated in 14 and 21 d old pigs in which ETEC diarrhea was induced. For the Exp. 1, eight early-weaned pigs($5.00{\pm}0.5kg$ average BW and 14 d average age) and eight weaned pigs($6.00{\pm}0.5kg$ average BW and 21 d average age) were used to examine influence of egg yolk antibodies on growth performance and resistance to ETEC 987P infection. Dietary treatments included 1) administered of commercial egg yolk(14 d of age; CEY14), 2) administered of egg yolk antibodies(14 d of age; EYA14), 3) administered of commercial egg yolk(21 d of age; CEY21), 4) administered of egg yolk antibodies(21 d of age; EYA21). The 14 and 21 d old pigs were challenged with 2 ml of ETEC 987P at a dose of $10^{10}\;CFU\;ml^{-1}$ per weaned pigs. Weaned pigs treated with egg yolk antibodies recovered and pigs treated with egg yolk antibodies tended to increase average daily gain(P<0.05). Also, EYA12 and EYA21 treatments were reduced coli-form bacteria concentration and increased Lactobacilli sp. concentration from feces. For the Exp. 2, sixteen weaned pigs($6.00{\pm}0.5kg$ average daily gain BW and 21 d average age) were used to examine influence of yolk or white from egg containing antibodies on growth performance and resistance to ETEC 987P infection. Dietary treatments included l) administered of commercial egg yolk(CEY), 2) administered of commercial egg white(CEW), 3) administered of egg yolk antibodies(EYA), 4) administered of egg white antibodies(EWA). Pigs treated only with EYA showed signs of recovery. Also, EYA treatment showed the best average daily gain without significant differences (P>0.05). EYA treatment was reduced coli-form bacteria concentration increased and Lactobacilli sp. concentration from feces. In conclusion, egg yolk antibodies have protective effects from pigs in which ETEC diarrhea was induced.

  • In this paper, millimeter-wave high gain and broadband MHEMT cascode amplifiers were designed and fabricated. The 0.1 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ InGaAs/InAlAs/GaAs Metamorphic HEMT was fabricated for cascode amplifiers. The DC characteristics of MHEMT are 640 mA/mm of drain current density, 653 mS/mm of maximum transconductance. The current gain cut-off frequency(f$_{T}$) is 173 GHz and the maximum oscillation frequency(f$_{max}$) is 271 GHz. By using the CPW transmission line, the cascode amplifier was designed the matched circuit for getting the broadband characteristics. The designed amplifier was fabricated by the MHEMT MIMIC process that was developed through this research. As the results of measurement, the 1 stage amplifier obtained 3 dB bandwidth of 37 GHz between 31.3 to 68.3 GHz. Also, this amplifier represents the S21 gain with the average 9.7 dB gain in bandwidth and the maximum gain of 11.3 dB at 40 GHz. The 2 stage amplifier has the broadband characteristics with 3 dB bandwidth of 29.5 GHz in the frequency range from 32.5 to 62.0 GHz. The 2 stage cascode amplifier represents the high gain characteristics with the average gain of 20.4 dB in bandwidth and the maximum gain of 22.3 dB at 36.5 GHz.z.z.

  • Complex environmental control systems were developed, which control properly the pig's environment in windowless pig-housing based on the thermoregulatory behaviors of pigs and concentrations of noxious gases (CO2 and NH3). The this study was conducted to assess the performance of complex environmental control systems by raising weaned piglets and growing pigs under different seasonal conditions. Average daily gain of pigs in the experimental pig-housing was slightly higher than that of pigs in the conventional pig-housing. Average daily gain was not significantly different in winter and spring(P>0.05), but was significantly different in summer(P<0.05). Feed conversion rate of pigs in the experimental pig-housing was smaller than that of pigs in the conventional pig-housing. Feed conversion rate was not significantly different in environment for weaned piglets and growing pigs resulted in the improved daily gain, feed conversion rate, and carcass quality of the finishing pigs. These results showed that the performance of the complex environmental control systems in windowless pig-housing was excellent for weaned piglets and growing pigs.

  • Three hundred and fifty-two growing pigs were utilized in three growth trials to investigate the effects of crystalline amino acid supplementation on growing pigs' growth performance and feed consumption. In Exp. 1, diets were formulated on the basis of digestible amino acids. Utilization of rapeseed meal plus cottonseed meal (R + C) in diet supported similar average daily gain (ADG), feed/gain (F/G) and cost per gain (p > 0.05) to group of soybean meal (SBM). In Exp. 2, 14% CP diets containing equal amount of cottonseed meal and rapeseed meal were formulated with the addition of threonine and/or tryptophan. Supplementation with threonine improved ADG and F/G (p < 0.05). Supplementation with only tryptophan made no benefits for ADG of growing pigs. In Exp. 3, diets with different threonine level were formulated. Increasing dietary threonine to 0.54% improved (p < 0.05) ADG and F/G compared to 0.45% dietary threonine. Increase in dietary threonine did not improve ADG (p > 0.05) but decreased F/G (p < 0.05) because of a decrease in average daily feed intake. Pigs fed diet with dietary threonine/lysine ratio of 67.5% supported optimum growth performance.

  • In this paper, we verify the performance of LDPC coded OFDM/DS system by Monte-Carlo simulation of BER on Eb/No. The simulation results show that LDPC coded OFDM/DS has a strong anti-jamming characteristic over pulse-noise jammer and partial-band noise jammer. The performance of LDPC coded OFDM/DS system is evaluated on both faded waveforms and non-faded waveforms. For non-faded waveforms, high coding gain is attained due to LDPC, even when waveforms have short PN sequence and JSR is only 5dB. Especially, the increase in the repeated number of LDPC decoding enhances coding gain. However, faded waveforms cannot achieve sufficient average effect when PN sequence is short. High coding gain of faded waveforms can be achieved by extending length of PN sequence. In addition, we compare LDPC coded OFDM/DS system with Convolutional coded OFDM/DS system. The simulation results illustrate that when LDPC coded OFDM/DS system with short PN sequence has sufficient average effects, the system shows lower BER than Convolutional coded OFDM/DS system with long PN sequence.

  • Thirty five crossbred male lambs of about 8 months age, with an average body weight of 24 kg were divided into 7 groups of 5 lambs each and were fed urea molasses blocks (UMB) for 150 days (groups 1 to 5); having, 4, 6, 8 and 10% urea respectively; while group 6 was fed concentrate @318 g per head daily and 7th group was kept as control i.e. grazing only. Daily consumption of UMB/concentrate was found to be 318, 246, 211, 93 and 318 g/d for groups 1 to 6, respectively. The statistical differences in consumption between group 1 and group 6, and group 2, 3 and 4 were found to be non-significant. Only group 5 differed statistically from all other groups. The average daily gain was 48, 29, 39, 38, 25 and 66 grams for groups 1 to 6 respectively, while group no. 7 lost 11 g/head/day. The differences in weight gain among groups 1, 3, 4 and 6 were non significant. The expenditure per kg body weight gain was found to be ($Rs^C$) 9.53, 12.45, 8.05, 7.99, 3.69 and 10.85 for groups 1 to 6, respectively.

  • Three hundred and sixty sexed 3-day-old broiler chicks were divided randomly into six treatment groups (control, antibiotic and black cumin at four levels) of 60 birds each. Black cumin seeds at 0.5%, 1%, 2% or 3% and avilamycin at 10 mg/kgt were added to the basal diet and their effects determined on feed intake, daily live weight gain, feed conversion ratio and carcass characteristics. There were no significant differences in daily feed intake at 21 and 42 days (p>0.05). Average daily gain was significantly different between the treatments. The birds fed the diet containing 1% black cumin seeds and antibiotic were the highest average daily gain, followed by those the other treatment diets and negative control (p<0.05). From 1 to 42 days of age, feed conversion ratios were improved significantly by supplementation with 1% black cumin seeds and with antibiotic (p<0.05) by approximately 5% compared to the control group. Similarly, the highest cold carcass, thigh, breast, wing, neck and liver weights were observed in the 1% black cumin and antibiotic groups (p<0.05). Accordingly, 1% supplementation of black cumin seeds to diets could be considered as an alternative natural growth promoter for poultry instead of antibiotics.

  • We present a weather-insensitive optical free-space communication method supporting optical packet channels. It operates optical fiber amplifiers in gain-saturation regions. When the propagation loss gets too high, it decreases the average packet rate, or the average packet length, or both, to increase the optical power level launched into the free-space. As a demonstration, we transmit $8{\times}10$ Gigabit Ethernet channels over a terrestrial distance of 2.4 km. One gain-saturated free-space optical repeater is used at the halfway point.

  • This research devoted to develop an incubator that could make an optimum environment condition according to days of age for suckling pigs to decrease the mortality and improve the rate of the weight gain of the suckling pigs. Results obtained from this research summarized as follows: 1. Several experiments were carried out at the farm to find the effect of incubator developed for suckling pigs on weight gain by season. The total average gain of the weight of the treatment group was around 6∼22kg, and 6∼23kg higher than control group at the first experiment (April 19), at the second (July 30), and at the third (September 23), year of 2000 experiment, respectively. There were no significant differences ($\alpha$=5%) of the total weight gain among treatment groups. There was, however, a significant difference ($\alpha$=5%) of the total weight gain between the control and treatment groups and it was considered to be that the incubator had efficiency for weight gain of the suckling pigs. 2. The survival rate of the control group was 87% in the total sample number of 92, meanwhile, which of the experiment group was 98% in the total sample number of 50 suckling pigs. 3. Finally, economic analysis was executed for suckling pigs based on a farm size of breeding 500 sows. The results showed that a break-even point was around 9 months and the annual profit of ₩52,265,694 was expected after the break-even point.
