  • This study presents a comprehensive experimental investigation on mostly encountered types of Reinforced Concrete Haunched Beams (RCHBs) where three modes of RCHBs investigated; the diversity of studied beams makes it a pioneer in this topic. The experimental study consists of twenty RCHBs and four prismatic beams. Effects of important parameters including beam type, the inclination angle, flexure and compressive reinforcement, shear reinforcement on mechanical behavior and failure mode of each mode of RCHBs were examined in detail. Furthermore crack propagation at certain load levels were inspected and visualized for each RCHB mode. The results confirm that RCHBs have different behavior in shear as compared to the prismatic beams. At the same time, different mechanical behavior was observed between the modes of RCHBs. Therefore, RCHBs were classified into three modes according to the inclination shape and mode of failure (Modes A, B and C). However, it was observed that there is no significant difference between RCHBs and prismatic beams regarding flexural behavior. Moreover, a new and unified formula was proposed to predict the critical effective depth of all modes of RCHBs that is very useful to predict the critical section for failure.

  • MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been reported to be involved in many neurodegenerative diseases. The present study focused on the role of hsa-miR-144-3p in one of the neuro-degenerative diseases, Parkinson's disease (PD). Our study showed a remarkable down-regulation of miR-144-3p expression in 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1, 2, 3, 6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-treated SH-SY5Y cells. MiR-144-3p was then overexpressed and silenced in human SH-SY5Y cells by miRNA-mimics and miRNA-inhibitor transfections, respectively. Furthermore, ${\beta}$-amyloid precursor protein (APP) was identified as a target gene of miR-144-3p via a luciferase reporter assay. We found that miR-144-3p overexpression significantly inhibited the protein expression of APP. Since mitochondrial dysfunction has been shown to be one of the major pathological events in PD, we also focused on the role of miR-144-3p and APP in regulating mitochondrial functions. Our study demonstrated that up-regulation of miR-144-3p increased expression of the key genes involved in maintaining mitochondrial function, including peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor ${\gamma}$ coactivator-$1{\alpha}$(PGC-$1{\alpha}$), nuclear respiratory factor 1 (NRF-1) and mitochondrial transcription factor A (TFAM). Moreover, there was also a significant increase in cellular ATP, cell viability and the relative copy number of mtDNA in the presence of miR-144-3p overexpression. In contrast, miR-144-3p silencing showed opposite effects. We also found that APP overexpression significantly decreased ATP level, cell viability, the relative copy number of mtDNA and the expression of these three genes, which reversed the effects of miR-144-3p overexpression. Taken together, these results show that miR-144-3p plays an important role in maintaining mitochondrial function, and its target gene APP is also involved in this process.

  • In the present paper, we prove common fixed point theorems for single-valued and set-valued occasionally weakly compatible mappings in Menger spaces. Our results improve and extend the results of Chen and Chang [Chi-Ming Chen and Tong-Huei Chang, Common fixed point theorems in Menger spaces, Int. J. Math. Math. Sci. 2006 (2006), Article ID 75931, Pages 1-15].

  • Classification of subjects with unknown distribution in small sample size setup may involve order-restricted constraints in multivariate parameter setups. Those problems makes optimality of conventional likelihood ratio based statistical inferences not feasible. Fortunately, Roy (1953) introduced union-intersection principle(UIP) which provides an alternative avenue. Redescending M-estimator along with that principle yields a considerably appropriate robust testing procedure. Furthermore, conditionally distribution-free test based upon exact permutation theory is used to generate p-values, even in small sample. Applications of this method are illustrated in simulated data and read data example (Lobenhofer et al., 2002)

  • Structural control is a very broad field combining the areas of automatic control and structural engineering, with applications ranging from aerospace and mechanical engineering to building and civil infrastructure systems. In this paper, the focus is placed on civil engineering applications only. The goal is to address the issues concurring to form the scientific paradigm. As a resut, possible future directions of research into this field are identified.

  • A GIS-RUSLE system has been developed to estimate soil losses from where individual fields on a hillslope using the RUSLE in a GIS environment. The GIS-RUSLE adopts a user interface and a user can use the drop-down menus to define the inputs and get the calculated results. The input data are generated from Arc/Info and ArcView GIS and the factors of the RUSLE are provided from ArcView Avenue. Examples of the GIS-RUSLE applications are presented.

  • Most drug discovery has focused in recent years on the development of molecules that either interact with or block receptors, proteins that act as on-off switches for genetic activity, on the surfaces of human cells. Now, we have developed a technology that targets “receptors inside the cell” (intracellular receptors), opening a new and compelling avenue for drug discovery. Our receptor-based small molecule drugs can be catagorized in two ways: 1) receptor agonists, or molecules that activate a receptor; and 2) receptor antagonists, or drugs that inactivate a receptor.
