This study was conducted to evaluate the grit removal efficiency of tornado block-type vortex grit separator. Vortex grit separator was manufactured for this study, and it was characterized by the impeller and tornado block installed in separator. Impeller was installed to increase water velocity in the separator and tornado block was installed to increase the grit lifting efficiency. Pilot study was also conducted in A sewage treatment plant (STP) in Gyeonggi province from November 2003 to May 2004 (64 days). Major findings are as follows. 1. Impeller was proven to increase water velocity in the grit separator, especially in low flow rate. This influence will increase separation ratio of organics from grits, preventing those organics from sedimentation. 2. Sand (with 0.2~0.3mm size) removal efficiency was over 98 % and 96 %, at the flow rate of $500m^3/day$ and $750m^3/day$ under the condition that impeller rotation velocity kept at 15 rpm. Originally that grit separator was designed to have the capacity of $500m^3/day$. $750m^3/day$ was tried to investigate the performance of this type of grit separator under overload condition. Stable grit removal was still available to the extent of 150% of designed capacity. 3. It took less than 3 minutes for the grit separator to completely lift out 3 kgs of 0.2-0.3 mm sized, settled sand at the bottom to 2,060 mm high above water surface. But it showed the tendency to spend a little more time on lifting the grit as the grit size and the vertical height of the lift increased. 4. During experimental duration in A STP, it was found that the average amount of inlet grit was about 981 g/day (160~1,685 g/day) under $500m^3/day$ of operation condition, but it varied so severely during the experimental duration. After classification of discharged grit according to its size, grit with 0.3-0.42 mm size was found as largest part of output.

Here, we estimated daily Photosynthetically Available Radiation (PAR) from Geostationary Ocean Colour Imager (GOCI) and compared it with daily PAR derived from polar-orbiting MODIS images. GOCI-based PAR was also validated with in-situ measurements from ocean research station, Socheongcho. GOCI PAR showed similar patterns with in-situ measurements for both the clear-sky and cloudy day, whereas MODIS PAR showed irregular patterns at cloudy conditions in some areas where PAR could not be derived due to the clouds of sunglint. GOCI PAR had shown a constant difference with the in-situ measurements, which was corrected using the in-situ measurements obtained on the days of clear-sky conditions at Socheongcho station. After the corrections, GOCI PAR showed a good agreement excepting on the days with so thick cloud that the sensor was optically saturated. This study revealed that GOCI can estimate effectively the daily PAR with its advantages of acquiring data more frequently, eight times a day at an hourly interval in daytime, than other polar orbit ocean colour satellites, which can reduce the uncertainties induced by the existence and movement of the cloud and insufficient images to map the daily PAR at the seas around Korean peninsula.
This experiment was conducted to determine the effect of variety and planting year on the nutritive values of corn fed to growing pigs. Four corn varieties examined in this experiment were planted in the same village located in Longhua County, Heibei Province, China, in 2012, 2013, and 2014, respectively. During each year, corn was hand-harvested in early October and sun dried to about 14% moisture content. Three batches of twenty-four barrows ($33.27{\pm}4.30$, $31.88{\pm}2.93$, $34.21{\pm}3.81kg$ body wight [BW] in 2012, 2013, and 2014, respectively) were used and allotted to a complete block design with 4 diets and 6 replicate pigs per diet. Pigs were individually placed in metabolic crates. The four experimental diets were formulated by mixing each variety of corn and vitamins and minerals, respectively. A five-day collection period followed a seven-day diet acclimation period. The results indicated that variety of corn significantly influenced the available energy content (digestible energy [DE] on dry matter basis, p<0.05; metabolizable energy (ME) on dry matter basis, p<0.05, respectively), and the apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of organic matter (p<0.01), dry matter (p<0.05), gross energy (p<0.05), neutral detergent fiber (p<0.01), acid detergent fiber and ether extract (p<0.05). The planting year also significantly influenced the available energy contents (DE on dry matter basis, p<0.05; ME on dry matter basis, p<0.01, respectively) and the ATTD of neutral detergent fiber (p<0.01), acid detergent fiber (p<0.01), crude protein (p<0.01), and ether extract (p<0.01). No interaction was observed between the variety and planting year in DE and ME contents in corn. In conclusion, the variety and planting year significantly influenced the available energy and nutrient digestibility of corn fed to growing pigs.
We have developed a set of daily solar flare peak flux forecast models for strong flares using multiple linear regression and artificial neural network methods. We consider input parameters as solar activity data from January 1996 to December 2013 such as sunspot area, X-ray flare peak flux and weighted total flux of previous day, and mean flare rates of McIntosh sunspot group (Zpc) and Mount Wilson magnetic classification. For a training data set, we use the same number of 61 events for each C-, M-, and X-class from Jan. 1996 to Dec. 2004, while other previous models use all flares. For a testing data set, we use all flares from Jan. 2005 to Nov. 2013. The best three parameters related to the observed flare peak flux are weighted total flare flux of previous day (r = 0.51), X-ray flare peak flux (r = 0.48), and Mount Wilson magnetic classification (r = 0.47). A comparison between our neural network models and the previous models based on Heidke Skill Score (HSS) shows that our model for X-class flare is much better than the models and that for M-class flares is similar to them. Since all input parameters for our models are easily available, the models can be operated steadily and automatically in near-real time for space weather service.
This trial was conducted to determine the effects of including canola protein concentrate in diets fed to broiler chickens on nutrient digestibility and broiler performance (0-21 days). A total of 180, day-old, male broiler chicks weighing an average of 52.8${\pm}$0.6 g were assigned to one of six dietary treatments in a completely randomized design. The control diet was based on corn and soybean meal and contained 15% canola meal. The experimental diets contained 3, 6, 9, 12 or 15% canola protein concentrate added at the expense of canola meal. There were five birds per pen and six replicate pens per treatment. Feed and water were available ad libitum throughout the 21-day experiment. Chromic oxide (0.35%) was added to all diets as a digestibility marker and was fed throughout the experimental period. The digestibility of dry matter, energy and phosphorus increased linearly (p<0.01) with increasing levels of canola protein concentrate. Although nutrient digestibility was higher for birds fed diets containing canola protein concentrate, these improvements did not translate into improvements in broiler performance. Weight gain was unaffected (p = 0.24) by level of canola protein concentrate. Feed intake was significantly increased (p<0.01) with the result that feed conversion tended to be poorer (p = 0.07) for birds fed diets containing canola protein concentrate. Mortality was also unaffected (p = 0.56) by dietary treatment.
The characteristics of backwash and concentrate discharges depend upon the quality of the water being treated and the net recovery of the membrane system. This paper is to indicate a design methods on the capacities of residuals treatment facilities in membrane processes for drinking water. We operated a demonstration membrane plant with a recovery rate of 90% for designing G-water treatment plant. We investigated on design parameter (optimum coagulant dosage and surface loading rate etc.) to design efficiently the residuals treatment facilities. The settling test was conducted with 1m columns dosing PACl to kaolin and membrane residuals under the experimental condition that discharge permit was under a 60mg/L. When the quantity of membrane residuals was $1,575m^3/day$, the estimated results for 1st thickener demonstrated the surface loading rate of 14.4m/day, detention time of 5.83hr, available depth of 3.5m.
Wholesale beef price is the critical factor for determining Korean native cattle, Hanwoo, farm's income in short-term. Wholesale beef price has seasonality due to high demand in Korean traditional holidays such as Korean thanksgiving day and lunar new year's day. Therefore, it is important to make reproduction and marketing plans for Korean Hanwoo farmers, in order to increase their farm income. However, there is no study available on changes in the expected farm income depending on reproduction and marketing schedules. This study analyzed the expected farm income per head depending on the monthly-based marketing schedules. The analysis was conducted based on the seasonality of wholesale beef price, reproduction efficiency, operating costs, relationship between carcass grade and slaughter age. The result shows that slaughter Hanwoo at the age of 29 months-old in August and January generating the highest expected farm income per head.
The aggregation of red blood cells (RBCs) is a major determinant of blood flow resistance passing through various veins. Available techniques for measuring RBC aggregation often require pretreating and washing after each measurement, which is not optimal for day-to-day clinical use. A laser reflection technique has been combined with a vibration-aided disaggregation mechanism, which shows significant advances in aggregometer design, operation and data analysis. The essential features of this design are in its simplicity and a disposable element that is in contact with the blood sample. Using extremely small quantities of blood, the RBCs subjected to vibrations can be quickly and completely disaggregated. This is followed by measuring the backscattered light intensity. The measurements with the present sensor were compared with those of a commercial aggregometer and a strong correlation was found between them. The newly-developed optical aggregometer can measure the RBC aggregability difference between young and old cell suspension with ease and accuracy.
A parallel TBF system that is consisted of two TBFs was developed f ‘ or the long-term treatment of gas-phase trichloroethylene (TCE). Each TBF was operated for TCE degradation or reactivation in a parallel mode, and the effect of switching time and operation variables between the two reactors was investigated. Within 12 hr after switching from TCE degradation to reactivation mode, the MO activity increased up to the initial level. More than 50 % of TCE was degraded for feed concentrations ranging from 5 to 17 ppmv, and completely 100 % removed at concentration of less than 5 ppmv, while TCE removal decreased severely over 28 ppmv. In various empty bed retention times (EBRTs), ranging 상 om 5.2 to 10.7 min, the optimal EBRT was 10.7 min that TCE conversion achieved more than 50 %. For the inlet loading below 23.4 mg TCE/L/day, TCE was entirely removed. The maximal TCE elimination capacity in this system was about 66.63 mg TCE/L/day. During the continuous treatment of TCE over 3 months, TCE removal efficiency was maintained at the range of about 50 %. In these results, the parallel TBF system can be available for the continuously TCE biodegrading operation.
Selenium contents of infant formulas that were commerically available in Japan and Korean were determined by the method of atomic absorption spectrometry with hydrode generation. Total means of selenium contents were 45.2$\pm$22.1ng/g(n=34) in all the Japaneses formulas and 58.3$\pm$18.9ng/g(n=22) in all the Korean formulas. selecnium contents of milk-based formulas (54.7$\pm$23.2ng/g in Japan, n=20 and 64.8$\pm$12.6ng/g in Korean , n=18) were significantly higher than those of soy-based formulas (36.8$\pm$11.0ng/g in Japanes brands, n=11 and 36.4ng/g in Korean one , N=1). Based on selenium data of these formulas the selenium intakes of infants have been estimated to be about 6.6$\mu\textrm{g}$/day and 8.1$\mu\textrm{g}$/day in Korean by milk-based formula feeding.
