  • The noise analysis is usually carried out in the early structure design stage for the main areas in a vessel such as an accommodation, an engine room, HVAC System and etc. If the analysis results are higher than the noise limits based on guideline, appropriate countermeasures are established to reduce noise levels and applied to the vessel. But excessive noise induced the main or auxiliary equipment and high pressure steam system is very difficult to check in the initial design stage, and local noise problems frequently appear in actual vessels. This paper deals with excessive noise of the engine control room on LNG carrier. It includes the cause analysis of excessive noise, the countermeasure, and verification. Also, it proves suitability of the countermeasure through the on-board test.

  • The dynamic response of two-dimensional unbounded domain on the rigid bedrock in the time domain is numerically obtained. It is realized by the modified scaled boundary finite element method (SBFEM) in which the original scaling center is replaced by a scaling line. The formulation bases on expanding dynamic stiffness by using the continued fraction approach. The solution converges rapidly over the whole time range along with the order of the continued fraction increases. In addition, the method is suitable for large scale systems. The numerical method is employed which is a combination of the time domain SBFEM for far field and the finite element method used for near field. By using the continued fraction solution and introducing auxiliary variables, the equation of motion of unbounded domain is built. Applying the spectral shifting technique, the virtual modes of motion equation are eliminated. Standard procedure in structural dynamic is directly applicable for time domain problem. Since the coefficient matrixes of equation are banded and symmetric, the equation can be solved efficiently by using the direct time domain integration method. Numerical examples demonstrate the increased robustness, accuracy and superiority of the proposed method. The suitability of proposed method for time domain simulations of complex systems is also demonstrated.

  • The Arabian Gulf region has one of the highest ocean temperatures, reaching above 35 degrees and ambient temperatures over 50 degrees in the summer. Two nuclear power plants (NPP) are being introduced in the region for the first time, one at Bushehr (1,000 MWe PWR plant from Russia), and a much larger one at Barakah (4X1,400 MWe PWR from Korea). Both plants take seawater from the Gulf for condenser cooling, having to modify the secondary/tertiary side cooling systems design by increasing the heat transfer surface area from the country of origin. This paper analyses the secondary side of a typical PWR plant operating under the Rankine cycle with a simplified thermal-hydraulic model. Parametric study of ocean cooling temperatures is conducted to estimate thermal efficiency variations and its associated design changes for the secondary side. Operational safety is reviewed to deliver rated power output with acceptable safety margins in line with technical specifications, mainly in the auxiliary systems together with the cooling water temperature. Impact on the Gulf seawater as the ultimate heat sink is considered negligible, affecting only the adjacent water near the NPP site, when compared to the solar radiation on the sea surface.

  • The plume produced by vaporizing tissue with a laser contains a variety of contaminants called laser-generated air pollutants (LGACs). LGACs consist of a mixture of toxic gas components, biomicroparticles, dead and living cells, and viruses. Toxic odors and thick smoke from surgical incisions and the coagulation of tissues can irritate eyes and airways, as well as cause bronchial and pulmonary congestion. Because of the potential risk of the smoke, it is advisable to appropriately remove it from the surgical site. We recommend using a smoke evacuator to remove the smoke. Suction nozzles should be placed as close as possible to the surgical site in a range of 2 cm or less. In-line filters should be used between the inlet and outlet of the surgical site. All air filtration devices should be capable of removing particles below 0.1 microns in size. The filter pack should be handled according to infection control procedures in the operating room. The laser mask can be an auxiliary protective device if it is properly worn. Some smoke inhaled under the nose wrap or over the side of the mask will not be filtered. As in electrosurgical operations, a suitable mask should be worn while smoke is present.

  • This paper proposed a new balanced power amplifier using the reflected input of conventional balanced power amplifiers composed of branch line hybrid coupler. In general, the single-ended amplifier in balanced amplifiers does not have the perfect matching, so the reflected input power, in other words the leakage power, is terminated conventionally at the isolation port of hybrid coupler. However in this work, the leakage power is injected into the auxiliary amplifier, and its output power is combined to the output power of balanced amplifier. Therefore output power, efficiency, and 2-tone IMD3 performances of the proposed balanced amplifier are highly improved compared to the conventional balanced amplifier. For the verification of the proposed balanced amplifier, a conventional balanced amplifier and the proposed balanced amplifier are designed, fabricated and measured, and the measured results are compared. The proposed balanced amplifier shows the improvement in the output power(Pout), power added efficiency (PAE), and 2-tone IMD3 by 3dB, 5.2%, and $5{\sim}10dBc$, respectively, from the measurement.

  • Over-break, which is excavated larger than planned line at tunnel excavation, is inevitable due to the nature of blasting. But regarding the bottom of the foundation, most of the domestic ordering organizations pay only 10 cm thick filled concrete when pouring concrete due to over-break. In accordance, the construction cost will increase greatly if all the depths of the designed over-break are filled only with concrete. When tunnel excavation occurs, concrete filling of 18 MPa(T = 100 mm) and 150 mm~237 mm auxiliary concrete layer and 240 mm concrete track(TCL) are applied to the upper part. The concrete is installed in an excessive amount of about 600 mm between the lower part of the rail and the tunnel rock bed. Therefore, in this study, it is necessary to analyze the concrete crack structure according to the depth of the existing tunnel and the modified tunnel section, and to evaluate the adequacy of the required thickness of the tunnel floor concrete for securing the crack stability of the concrete.
