  • In this study, we devised methods to enhance the efficiency of rotor sails which have been applied as one of the energy saving devices of ships. The idea of the study originated from the notion that installing protrusions or increasing the surface roughness on the smooth surface of the rotor sail could delay the separation of the incoming wind flow and consequently increase the lift force. Five cylinder models were considered and tested in an open-type wind tunnel at Chungnam National University. A smooth surface cylinder exhibits the highest lift-to-drag ratio at a specific Reynolds number, and as the Reynolds number increases this value decreases sharply. The variation in this typical Magnus force can be significantly improved by altering the surface shape and roughness of the rotor sail. It has been observed that increasing the surface roughness improves the lift characteristics, resulting in increased efficiency. Furthermore, it revealed that the reverse Magnus effect which may occur during actual operation in the low spin ratio region can be significantly enhanced.

  • In this paper, KOMPSAT satellite launch and deployment operations are discussed. The U.S. Taurus launch vehicle delivers KOMPSAT satellite into the mission orbit directly. Launch and deployment operations is monitored and controlled by several international ground stations including Korean Ground Station (KGS). After separation from launch vehicle, KOMPSAT spacecraft deploys solar array by on-board autonomous stored commands without ground inter-vention and stabilizes the satellite such that solar arrays point to the sun. Autonomous ground communication is designed for KOMPSAT for the early orbit ground contact. KOMPSAT space-craft has capability of handing contingency situation by on-board fault management design to retry deployment sequence.

  • Many distributed applications build overlays on top of the Internet. Several unsolved issues at the network layer can explain this trend to implement network services such as multicast, mobility, and security at the application layer. On one hand, overlays creating basic topologies are usually limited in flexibility and scalability. On the other hand, overlays creating complex topologies require some form of application level addressing, routing, and naming mechanisms. Our aim is to design an efficient and robust addressing, routing, and naming infrastructure for these complex overlays. Our only assumption is that they are deployed over the Internet topology. Applications that use our middleware will be relieved from managing their own overlay topologies. Our infrastructure is based on the separation of the naming and the addressing planes and provides a convergence plane for the current heterogeneous Internet environment. To implement this property, we have designed a scalable distributed k-resilient name to address binding system. This paper describes the design of our overlay infrastructure and presents performance results concerning its routing scalability, its path inflation efficiency and its resilience to network dynamics.

  • We show that in quasi-topological spaces, separation axiom $T_2$ is equivalent to ${\alpha}-T_2$, $T_0$ is equivalent to semi - $T_0$, and semi - $T_{\frac{1}{2}}$ is equivalent to semi - $T_D$. Also, we give characterizations for ${\alpha}-T_1$, semi - $T_1$ and semi - $T_{\frac{1}{2}}$ generalized topological spaces.

  • The extent and depth of the event plan determines the scope of pedagogical experience in situations and consequently the quality of immersive learning based on our simulated world. In contrast to planning in conventional narrative-based systems mainly pursuing dramatic interests, planning in virtual world-based pedagogical systems strive to provide realistic experiences in immersed situations. Instead of story plot comprising predetermined situations, our inter-event planning method aims at simulating diverse situations that each involve multiple events coupled via their associated agents' conditions and meaningful associations between events occurring in a background world. The specific techniques to realize our planning method include, two-phase planning based on inter-event search and intra-event decomposition (down to the animated action level); autonomous and independent agents to behave proactively with their own belief and planning capability; full-blown background world to be used as the comprehensive stage for all events to occur in; coupling events via realistic association types including deontic associations as well as conventional causality; separation of agents from event roles; temporal scheduling; and parallel and concurrent event progression mechanism. Combining all these techniques, diverse exogenous events can be derived and seamlessly (i.e., semantically meaningfully) integrated with the original event to form a wide scope of situations providing chances of abundant pedagogical experiences. For effective implementation of plan execution, we devise an execution scheme based on multiple priority queues, particularly to realize concurrent progression of many simultaneous events to simulate its corresponding reality. Specific execution mechanisms include modeling an action in terms of its component motions, adjustability of priority for agent across different events, and concurrent and parallel execution method for multiple actions and its expansion for multiple events.

  • The flow field measurement above whole area of the flight deck on 'Landing Platform Helicopter (LPH)' was performed by using PIV system in wind tunnel. In various heading angle conditions (0deg, -30deg, -45deg, -60deg, -75deg and ±90deg), the velocity fields such as U velocity & V velocity were measured at three different height above flight deck. Due to the geometrical characteristics of several bodies like deck, crane and super-structure, various vortex were generated. When the heading angle is 0deg, the deck edge vortex by flight deck and massive separation by super-structure were clearly observed by visualization with smoke and PIV, respectively. In other heading angles, the acceleration of flow in space between crane and super-structure were detected. And area with flow separation by super-structure is directly related to the heading angle of vessel.

  • Background: Among the various ginseng strains, Shizhu ginseng is endemic to China, mainly distributed in Kuandian Manchu Autonomous County (Liaoning Province, China); however, not much is known about the compounds (especially saponins) in Shizhu ginseng. Methods: A rapid, sensitive, and reliable ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with MS/MS (UHPLC-MS/MS) method was developed to separate and identify saponins in Shizhu ginseng. Results: The separation was carried out on a Waters ACQUITY UPLC BEH $C_{18}$ column ($100mm{\times}2.1mm$, $1.7{\mu}m$) with acetonitrile and 0.1% formic acid aqueous solution as the mobile phase under a gradient elution at $40^{\circ}C$. The detection was performed on a Micromass Quattro Micro API mass spectrometer equipped with electrospray ionization source in both positive and negative modes. Under the optimized conditions, a total of 31 saponins were identified or tentatively characterized by comparing retention time and MS data with related literatures and reference substances. Conclusion: The developed UHPLC-MS/MS method was suitable for identifying and characterizing the chemical constituents in Shizhu ginseng, which provided a helpful chemical basis for further research on Shizhu ginseng.

  • Vehicle average speed information which measured at a point or a short section has a problem in that it cannot accurately provide the speed changes on an actual highway. In this study, segment separation method based on vehicle big data for accurate micro-speed estimation is proposed. In this study, to find the point where the speed deviation occurs using location-based individual vehicle big data, time and space mean speed functions were used. Next, points being changed micro-scale speed are classified through gradual segment separation based on geohash. By the comparative evaluation for the results, this study presents that the link-based speed is could not represent accurate speed for micro-scale segments.

  • Renewable energy sources based on solar radiation, wind energy, geothermal energy, and biomass energy have now reached the level of industrial application. A new way to generate electricity using low-potential heat is to install a hydro-steam turbine. In hydro-steam turbines, hot water is supplied directly to turbine rotor nozzles without prior separation into steam and water in separators, which significantly increases the efficiency of hot water energy use. Such turbines are suggested to be used as autonomous energy sources in geothermal heating systems, heating water boilers and cooling systems of chemical reactors, metallurgical furnaces, etc. The authors conclude that the installation of hydro-steam turbines in heating plants and process boiler plants can also be effective if the used exhaust steam-water mixture at the turbine outlet is used to heat the network water or as return water.
