KARES (KAIST Rehabilitation Engineering System) is the rehabilitation robot system in the type of the 6 degrees of freedom robot arm mounted on the wheelchair, in order to assist the independent livelihood of the disabled and the elderly. The interface device for programming and controlling of the robot arm is essential in the rehabilitation robotic system. Specially, in the case of the manual operation of the robot arm, the user has the burden of cognition and the difficulty for the operation of the robot arm. As a remedy, color vision system for the autonomous performance of jobs is proposed, and four basic desired jobs are specified. By mounting the camera in eye-in-hand type, color vision system for KARES is set up. The desired jobs for picking up the target and moving it to the user's face for drinking are successfully performed in real-time at the indoor environment.
For the autonomous movement, the optimal path planning connecting between current and target positions is essential, and the optimal path of mobile robot means obstacle-free and the shortest length path to a target position. Many actual mobile robots should move without any information of surrounded obstacles. Thus, this paper suggests new methods of path planning and obstacle avoidment, suitable in unknown environments. This method of path planning always tracks the local target expected as the optimal one, and the result of continuous tracking becomes the first generated moving path. This path, however, do not regard the collision with obstacles. Thus, this paper suggests a new method of obstacle avoidance resembled with the Potential Field method. Finally, a simulation confirms the performance and correctness of the path planning and obstacle avoidance, suggested in this paper.

We believe that smart spaces, offering pervasive services, will proliferate. However, at present, those islands of smart spaces should be joined seamlessly with each other. As users move about, they will have to roam from one autonomous smart space to another. When they move into the new island of smart space, they should setup their devices and service manually or not have access to the services available in their home spaces. Sometimes, there will conflicts between users when they try to occupy the same space or use a specific device at the same time. It will also be critical to elder people who suffer from Alzheimer or other cognitive impairments when they travel from their smart space to other visited spaces (e.g., grocery stores, museums). Furthermore our experience in building the Gator Tech Smart House reveals to us that home residents generally do not want to lose or be denied all the features or services they have come to expect simply because they move to a new smart space. The seamless inter-space interaction requirements and issues are raised automatically when the ubiquitous pervasive computing system tries to establish the user's service environment by allocating relevant resources after the user moves to a new location where there are no prior settings for the new environment. In this paper, we raise and present several critical inter-space interactions issues impacting middleware architecture design of ubiquitous pervasive computing. We propose requirements for resolving these issues on seamless inter-space operation. We also illustrate our approach and ideas via a service scenario moving around two smart spaces.
In the focusing on the important of wireless internet, mobile terminal device plays a central role in tracking and coordinating terms in mobile business processing. Especially, mobile device has been considered as a key technology for embedded software and ubiquitous era. Because existing web environments is moving to wireless internet, the new concepts for wireless internet computing environments has gained increasing interest. Mobile agents provide a new abstraction for deploying over the existing infrastructures. Mobile application systems require the flexibility, adaptability, extensibility, and autonomous. New software developments methodology is required to meet the requirements. In this paper, we present an agent architectures model that allows compassable components with pluggable and independable. Our approach involves wrapping components inside a servlet. We have used the model and components to develop the PDA mobile agent.
Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is a wireless network consisting of spatially distributed autonomous devices, using sensors to cooperatively monitor physical or environmental conditions. WSNs face the critical challenge of sustaining long-term operation on limited battery energy. Coverage maintenance has been proposed as a promising approach to prolong network lifetime. Mobile sensors equipped with communication devices can be leveraged to overcome the coverage problem. In this paper, we propose a stepwise movement scheme using perimeter coverage property for the coverage maintenance problem. In our scheme, each sensor monitors neighboring dead nodes, determines vulnerable node (i.e. dead node which makes uncovered area), computes the center of uncovered area HC, and makes a coordinated stepwise movement to compensate the uncovered area. In our experimental results, our scheme shows at least 50 % decrease in the total moving distance which determines the energy efficiency of mobile sensor.

The percentage of those aged 60 and over is 43.5% among our country's 3,186 thousands farming population, so farm village is getting aging society rapidly. Moreover agricultural competitiveness has being weakened due to labor shortage by degradation in quality of labor configuration from elderly porson. For realisms easy workability, we developed a motor vehicle for agricultural activity. The vehicle has an automatic guidance system which could follows a track of magnetic tape on the floor for easy moving to given working position. We collected data from two guidance sensors, located on front and rear end of the vehicle and calculated displacement and angle deviation from the track. This traveling system was stably controlled with processing information deflection S, angle of deviation, D and angle velocity, Vt = $k_1D$ - $k_2S$ from two guidance sensors attached on front and rear of th motor vehicle. Also this system have been tested under various condition of $k_1$, $k_2$ for comparison on both stepped and turning routes. The results show that traveling performance is best at $k_1$=0.7, $k_2$=3.
This paper presents design and integration of the ROBHAZ-DT3, which is a newly developed mobile robot system with chained double-track mechanisms. A passive adaptation mechanism equipped between the front and rear body enables the ROBHAZ-DT3 to have good adaptability to uneven terrains including stairs. The passive adaptation mechanism reduces energy consumption when moving on uneven terrain as well as its simplicity in design and remote control, since no actuator is necessary for adaptation. Based on this novel mobile platform, a rescue version of the ROBHAZ-DT3 with appropriate sensors and a semi-autonomous mapping and localization algorithm is developed to participate in the RoboCup2004 US-Open: Urban Search and Rescue Competition. From the various experiments in the realistic rescue arena, we can verify that the ROBHAZ-DT3 is reliable in traveling rugged terrain and the proposed mapping and localization algorithm are effective in the unstructured environment with uneven ground. The another application is an military robot for an EOD(Explosive Ordnance Disposal) and reconnaissance mission. The military version of the ROBHAZ-DT3 with a water disrupter, a thermal scope and a long distance wireless communication device is developed and sent to the area of military tactics in Iraq. Consequently, the feasibility of the military version of ROBHAZ-DT3 is verified.

Recently, Location Based Service including tracking and way-finding services has been activated rapidly in the ubiquitous computing environment. According as the ubiquitous computing environment is developed, various types of sensor to acquire various data including location of the moving object are used widely, and acquired sensor data becomes abundant. However, the existing location management system based on a single location sensor is difficult to support LBS efficiently in the ubiquitous computing environment. In this paper, therefore, we propose the location management system in the ubiquitous computing environment that can manage the location data and the various sensor data efficiently. In addition, the location management system adopts the core technology for efficiently storing and transferring a large-volume of various data such as location data and for efficiently processing the various requests from a variety of servers and sensors. Especially, our architecture that is presented in this paper can support context-aware services and autonomous services efficiently in the ubiquitous computing environment.

With the rising numbers of elderly and disabled people, the demand for welfare services using a robotic system and not involving human effort is likewise increasing. This study deals with a mobile-robot system combined with a BWS (Body Weight Support) system for gait rehabilitation. The BWS system is designed via the kinematic analysis of the robot's body-lifting characteristics and of the walking guide system that controls the total rehabilitation system integrated in the mobile robot. This mobile platform is operated by utilizing the AGV (Autonomous Guided Vehicle) driving algorithm. Especially, the method that integrates geometric path tracking and obstacle avoidance for a nonholonomic mobile robot is applied so that the system can be operated in an area where the elderly users are expected to be situated, such as in a public hospital or a rehabilitation center. The mobile robot follows the path by moving through the turning radius supplied by the pure-pursuit method which is one of the existing geometric path-tracking methods. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through the real experiments those are conducted for path tracking with static- and dynamic-obstacle avoidance. Finally, through the EMG (Electromyography) signal measurement of the subject, the performance of the proposed system in a real operation condition is evaluated.
Digitalized Image Information is variously used like to substitute or help human's visual ability. Unmanned observation Camera is useful for the preventing disaster, risk factor and object observation but it is mostly to depend on awareness for human's vision. The purpose of this paper is to show that Unmanned Aerial Camera carries out object recognition and autonomous position tracking. when the informations about a specific object are given. For this purpose, we have to solve complicated problems like change according to object movement and variation of color and brightness information with refraction, interference and scattering of light and noise from environmental factors like weather. But, as the first step we limit the scope of this study with simplified environment in this paper. Our goal is the study and experience about object recognition and tracking via simplified environment with unmanned aerial camera. We obtained successful results of this study and experiment.
