Objectives The purpose of this study is to evaluate the characteristics of autonomic nervous system in heart-weakened children via analyzing heart rate variability (HRV) compare to healthy children. Methods Among the children who have visited the department of pediatrics at OO oriental medicine hospital, the subjects were composed of 62 elementary school students without cardiac disorder, who have yet develop secondary sexual characteristics. Results 1. Mean HRT and SDNN of the heart-weakened group of children were lower than the healthy group, but with no statistical significance. 2. Heart-weakened children had higher LF norm and LF/HF ratio, but lower HF norm than healthy children. The rest of the Frequency Domain Index have no significant differences. 3. Heart-weak score showed a positive correlation with Mean HRT and LF/HF ratio. Conclusions Heart-weakened children had an imbalance in autonomic nervous system due to increase of sympathetic nerve activity and decrease of parasympathetic nerve activity.

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the respiratory cycle and posture can modulate the autonomic nervous system. Methods : Thirty-two healthy men and women, aged 20-30 years, were enrolled in this study. We conducted 2-second and 6-second respiratory cycle with the subjects in standing, sitting, and supine positions, respectively. Their heart rate variability was measured in each position for both cycle lengths. Results : The low frequency/high frequency (LF/HF) ratio is derived from heart rate variability. In the 2-second respiratory cycles, the LF/HF ratios were highest in standing, sitting, and supine position in descending order. There was a significant difference in heart rate between standing and sitting positions (P<.005). In addition, there was a significant difference in heart rate between standing and supine position (P<.000). In the 6-second respiratory cycles, the LF/HF ratios were again highest in a standing, sitting, and supine position in descending order. However, posture was not found to make a significant difference in this case. Conclusion : Respiratory cycle and posture effectively modulated the autonomic nervous system. Further studies of the clinical application of these results should be conducted.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to show a case of patient with dysfunction of autonomic nervous system improved by oriental medical treatment. Methods: This patient was 66 year-old woman who complained pantalgia including abdominal pain and headache, cold sweating, anxiety, palpitation and fatigue. She was treated by herbal medicine(加味溫膽湯 $ji\bar{a}w\grave{e}iw\bar{e}nd\breve{a}nt\bar{a}ng$), acupuncture, moxa and aroma therapy. We used VAS(Visual analogue scale) to measure the progress of symptoms. Results : The symptoms of dysfunction of autonomic nervous system was improved after oriental medical therapy. Conclusions : This study suggests that oriental medicine therapy is effective in the trearment of dysfunction of autonomic nervous system.
Using air conditioner has been increased in home or office buildings in summer. Also various problems related to air conditioning such as disease induction happened by using air conditioner excessively and operating long. Active operation control is needed for occupant's health when air conditioner operates long. We should think ahead to acquire thermal comfort of occupants which represents psychological and physiological reaction for this operation. Research has been progressed to observe activity of autonomic nervous system by trying to quantitate change of thermal comfort. In this study, questions of the subject and change of body's autonomic nervous system were chosen to evaluate thermal comfort during operation of air conditioner for a long time. Electrocardiogram and questions of the subject which is the progress of changing TSV and CSV by occupants indoor were measured when room air conditioner is operated for a long time, and an air-conditioned adaptability of human body was evaluated by acquiring the change rate of autonomic nervous system through analyzing HRV. As a result of the evaluation, change rate of body's autonomic nervous system corresponded to votes of the subject's question generally, but was distinguished from analysis result of warm-cold sensation in a low temperature area.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the autonomic nervous system activity in various ambient temperatures. To evaluate autonomic function, we use the frequency domain analysis of heart rate variability such as FFT(fast fourier transformation), AR(Auto-Regressive) model and Lomb-Scargle peridogram. HRV(heart rate variability) is calculated by using ECG recorded from 3 different temperature room which temperature is controlled in 18℃(low), 25℃(mid) and 38℃(high), respectively. Totally 22 subjects were participated in the experiment. In the results, the most significant autonomic changes caused by temperature load were found in the HF(high frequency) component of FFT and AR model. And the HF power is decreased by increasing temperature. Significance level was increased by increasing the difference of temperatures.
Objective : The purpose of this experimental-controlled study was to investigate the characteristics of the autonomic nervous system in students with Keongke by using HRV(Heart rate variability) and PSV(Pupil size variability). Method : The study group was consisted of 11 students with self recognition as the experimental group, and 25 normal students as the control group. Informations on gender and age were obtained by medical charts and personal interviews. By using heart rate variability and pupil size variability, we measured the value of HRT(Heart rate), SDNN(Standard deviation of NN intervals), LFnorm(Low frequency normalization), HFnorm(High frequency normalization), LF/HF ratio, Pupil area, B.S.(Basic size), C.R.(Max Constriction Rate) and 1s.d.(1sec Dilation Rate). I compared the degrees of the sympathetic and parasympathetic activity. Result : 1. In the result of heart rate variability between experimental and control group, none of the parameters of experimental group were significantly different from control group. And even though there were no statistical significance, there were some numerical differences in SDNN, LF norm, HF norm. 2. In pupil size variability, C.R. and 1s.d. of the experimental group were increased compared to control group. Conclusion : The study results suggest that the group with Keongke has differences of autonomic nervous system as compared to those in normal state. Measurement value of PSV is a new technical approach to estimate the autonomic nervous system.

Purpose : The stress of job-seeking college students is gradually worsening due to the continuing recession in the job market. Therefore, this study aims to verify whether intervention with an 'aromatherapy education program,' which combines theory and practice, has greater effect on stress, self-efficacy, and autonomic nervous system function than simple inhalation of essential oils in female college students preparing for employment. Methods : A single-blind, randomized controlled trial was conducted once a week for a total of 4 weeks with 29 female college students preparing for employment. Interventions included essential oil inhalation combined with an aromatherapy education program (experimental group(EG), n=14) and essential oil inhalation alone (control group(CG), n=15); measurements were taken before, immediately after, and 2 weeks after completion of the intervention. Evaluations were conducted using the job-seeking stress scale, stress VAS, self-efficacy scale, and a pulse-wave measuring instrument. Results : There were significant differences between the CG and EG groups with repeated measurements of job-seeking stress (p=.003), cognitive stress (p<.001), and self-efficacy (p<.001). There was a significant interaction between group and time. There were also significant differences between the CG and EG in terms of autonomic nervous system changes stress index(p=.047), total power(p=.029), high frequency(p=.036), and low frequency/high frequency ratio(p=.049). However, there was no significant difference in low frequency between the groups. Conclusion : The aromatherapy education program was more effective in improving job-seeking stress, cognitive stress, self-efficacy, and autonomic nervous system function than simple essential oil inhalation. For the aromatherapy education program to be useful as a complementary intervention for stress management in job seekers, it will be necessary to gather additional evidence of its efficacy by conducting follow-up studies with diverse participants and expanding the numbers, and durations, of the interventions.

Purpose: This study was done to identify the effects of Qi hand reflexology on autonomic nerve activity in patients admitted to hospital. Method: A non-equivalent control group and quasi-experimental research with pre/post test design were used and 59 patients on a medical ward were assigned to either the experimental group (32) or the control group (27). The study variables included vital signs, autonomic nerve activities (ALF (absolute low frequency), AHF (absolute high frequency), nLF (normalized low frequency), nHF (normalized high frequency), SDNN (standard deviation of all normal-normal intervals)) and were evaluated using the QECG-3 system. The experimental group was treated with Qi hand reflexology for 10 minutes per day, for 3days. Results: Skin temperature and systolic blood pressure in the experimental decreased with treatment. ALF, AHF and SDNN for the experimental group increased with regulating proportion (nLF: nHF=6:4) and a significant difference between the groups was observed. Conclusion: The results indicated that application of Qi hand reflexology for patients in the hospital is effective in regulating the autonomic nervous system activation. Implication of finding should be useful for future research.
The study investigated the effect of multi-functional fabric on the autonomic nervous function and psychological variables of 20 students. The experimental group exhibited lower values in anxiety, depression, fatigue and stress level and higher emotional level. This study reveals that multi-functional fabrics reduced the low frequency/high frequency power ratio of heart rate variability. These results support the multi-functional fabrics increases cardiac parasympathetic tone. In addition, experimental group were found to have lower heart rate compared with controls. This augmented heart rate in experiment provides support for stablizing autonomic nervous system. In conclusion, multi-functional fabrics may stabilize the autonomic nervous system and psychological symptoms.
The R-R interval analyzer was developed to measure the autonomic nervous system function using microcomputer. The system based on 8 bit microcomputer including bandpass filter, R-wave detector and clock generator in order to obtain the mean value, standard deviation, total time, CV value, maximum value and minimum value in the specific view point of R-R interval variation. The pattern of R-R interval change after resting, voluntary standing and deep breathing can be analysed in normal subjects and diabetics with autonomic nervous dysfunction. The amplitude of the R-R interval variation showed sensitive pattern for normal subjects at resting, standing and deep breathing. On the contrary, the periodicities of amplitude for abnormal subjects with autonomic nervous dysfunction showed dull pattern. It was suggested that R-R interval analyzer is a good detection method for dysfunction of autonomic nervous system.
