  • Appeared in the 1970s he started the global warming problem of carbon reduction, unlike the expected withdrawal of the United States was anticipated to be nominal stripping. However, EU mainly carbon market, buy and sell rights to be disposed of evolution was born. In fact, the current reduction of the Kyoto Protocol, and Korea will be designated as the bureau had been scheduled. However, due to economic recession in Korea's status as exempt countries have enjoyed a considerable period. Global warming is a problem in earnest, however, the United States to participate in one or more such discussions since 2013, clearly this will begin the international order. And international order that is more stringent than expected, and is expected to be strong. Then, however, an interesting thing to justify protection of the environment in some countries to protect domestic industry, the movement is visible is the side. In fact the WTO since the conclusion of all non-tariff trade barriers were abolished. However, recently, New Round of the delay based on reciprocity and fair trade in the framework of environmental protection to justify the movement to protect the domestic industry has been captured. These trends are not friendly, never in Korea. The rationale is that these regulations are enforced, many of our countries and countries with significant trade transactions and the enforcement points. And South Korea's automotive, semiconductors, ships, etc. The main products are much discussed in the international regulations are being referred to as the target point is due. Korean government to actively participate in the international situation and efforts to explore new markets, said yesterday, and 'Low Carbon, Green Growth' was declared. And the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change(IPCC) recommendations of the best 30% reduction target was present. This is nothing different about this objection is true. A more fundamental solution to faithfully perform the reduction targets, while the development of environmentally friendly products and the incidence of international standards through the development and expansion of new growth engines, Indeed we are expected to be a fundamental methodology.

  • Oval substrates are widely used in automobiles to reduce the exhaust emissions in Diesel oxidation Catalyst of CI engine. Because of constraints in space and packaging Oval substrate is preferred rather than round substrate. Obtaining the flow uniformity is very challenging in oval substrate comparing with round substrate. In this present work attempts are made to optimize the inlet cone design to achieve the optimal flow uniformity with the help of CATIA V5 which is 3D design tool and CFX which is 3D CFD tool. Initially length of inlet cone and mass flow rate of exhaust stream are analysed to understand the effects of flow uniformity and pressure drop. Then short straight cones and angled cones are designed. Angled cones have been designed by two methodologies. First methodology is rotating flow inlet plane along the substrate in shorter or longer axis. Second method is shifting the flow inlet plane along the longer axis. Large improvement in flow uniformity is observed when the flow inlet plane is shifted along the direction of longer axis by 10, 20 and 30 mm away from geometrical centre. When the inlet plane is rotated again based on 30 mm shifted geometry, significant improvement at rotation angle of $20^{\circ}$ is observed. The flow uniformity is optimum when second shift is performed based on second rotation. This present work shows that for an oval substrate flow, uniformity index can be optimized when inlet cone is angled by rotation of flow inlet plane along axis of substrate.

  • When turbochargers are applied to engines, the temperature of the engine becomes high, making the cooling of pistons very important. To solve this problem, an oil jet is used. The oil jet provides oil to the underside of piston for cooling. When an oil jet is used, oil pump size-up and oil cooler are needed because of the increased oil flow rate and higher oil temperature. On the other hand, these increase the friction torque of the engine. This study examined how much the friction torque of an engine increases by an oil jet, oil cooler, and oil pump size-up. In addition, the proportions of the friction torque of the engine increased by each part were measured by changing the engine assembly condition. At low speed, the oil pump and oil cooler had a larger effect on the friction torque than the other factors. At high speed, oil cooler had a larger effect than the other factors.

  • Using a hydrogen blended compressed natural gas (HCNG) as a fuel for IC engines has a significant meaning in terms of achieving a reduction of automotive exhaust emissions as well as preparing for an upcoming hydrogen economy by constructing hydrogen infrastructure. In addition, a HCNG engine has higher thermal efficiency than a CNG engine, which is another advantage that makes HCNG fuel considered as a future alternative for natural gas. Therefore, in this study, idling operation of a 11 litre HCNG bus engine was investigated in terms of fuel consumption rate and emissions characteristics. The results show that fuel consumption rate was decreased more than 20% by use of HCNG and all the emissions were significantly reduced in idling condition.

  • In recently designed diesel engines, the running conditions for piston-pin bearings have become severe because of the higher combustion pressure and increased temperature. Moreover, the metal removal from the bushing material has strongly reduced the ability of the antifriction material to accept asperity contacts. Therefore, it is necessary to find ways of reducing wear scar on the connecting-rod small-end bushing and piston-pin boss bearing related to the higher combustion pressure on the power cell of an engine. In this work, the position and level of material removal from the surfaces of the bushing and bearing under such severe operating conditions - for example, maximum power and torque conditions of a passenger car diesel engine - are estimated for several combinations of surface roughness. First, piston-pin rotating motion is investigated by calculating the friction coefficient at piston-pin bearings, the oil film thickness, and the frictional torques induced by hydrodynamic shear stress. Subsequently, the wear scarring on the surfaces of a connecting-rod small-end bushing and two piston-pin boss bearings related to piston-pin rotational motion is numerically calculated under the maximum power and torque operating conditions. This work is helpful to determine the reasonable surface roughness of the bushing and bearing for reducing wear volume occurring at the interface between a bearing and a shaft.

  • Hydrotreated biodiesel(HBD) is paraffinic bio-based liquid, with the chemical structure $C_nH_{2n+2}$, originating from vegetable oil(the process can also be applied to animal fat). The oil or fat is treated in a number of process, the most important being hydrogenation, in order to create a bio-based liquid diesel fuel. During the hydrogenation, oxygen is removed from the triglyceride and converted into water. Propane is formed as a by product and can be combusted and used for energy production. HBD can be used in conventional diesel engines, pure or blended with conventional diesel, due to its similar physical properties to diesel. This study reports the quality characteristics with chemical and physical properties as an alternative diesel fuel. Especially, HBD showed higher cetane value and number than FAME, and it is consisted of $C_{15}$ - $C_{18}$ n-paraffinic compounds. We also describes quality characteristics of HBD blends(2, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 vol%) in automotive diesel. HBD blends(max. 20 vol%) were the limit by the Korean specification due to poor low temperature characteristics.

  • Recent research has focused on alternative fuel to improve engine performance and to comply with emission regulation. Finding an alternative fuel and reducing environment pollution are the main goals for future internal combustion engines. The purpose of this study is to obtain low-emission and high-efficiency by hydrogen enriched CNG fuel in SI engine and is to clarify the effects of hydrogen enrichment in CNG fuelled engine on exhaust emission and performance. An experimental study was carried out to obtain fundamental data for performance and emission characteristics of hydrogen enrichment in SI engine. The experiment was conducted at 2500 rpm, bmep 2 bar, 4 bar conditions while CNG fuel was mixed with 10, 20 and 30% hydrogen blends. From the experimental results, combustion duration was shortened due to rapid flame propagation velocity of hydrogen and these were attributed to the burning velocity increasing exponentially with increasing hydrogen blending ratio. Hydrogen has much wider flammable limit than methane, gasoline and the minimum ignition energy is about an order of magnitude lower than for other combustion. By adding hydrogen, $CO_2$ and HC were reduced. However, $NO_X$ was increased dut to high rate of heat release for hydrogen substitutions.

  • Improvement of the thermal efficiency in operation and maintenance of low- and medium-speed engines is a kind of never-ending requirement in the maritime power plant business. For the purpose of improving engine management efficiency, a principal factor that represents the fitness of the engine should be identified. Gas pressure, gas temperature, and vibration have all been used as this factor. However, they have limitations in terms of response speed and diagnosis accuracy. The EFR (engine fitness ratio) is suggested as a new diagnostic factor in this paper. The EFR is defined as the ratio of particular frequencies in the frequency domain and represents the fitness of an engine. It is calculated from the fluctuation pattern of the crankshaft angular speed. The EFR was verified using an experimental method for a low-speed engine and an analytic method for a medium-speed engine.

  • Although the demands for diesel engine is increased, our world is faced with very serious problems related to the air pollution due to the exhaust emissions of the diesel engine. In this study, the potential possibility of oxygenated fuel such as Methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) was investigated for the sake of exhausted smoke reduction from diesel engine. MTBE has been used as a fuel additive blended into unleaded gasoline to improve octane number, but the study of application for diesel engine was incomplete. Because MTBE includes oxygen content approximately 18%, it is a kind of oxygenated fuel that the smoke emission of MTBE is reduced remarkably compared with commercial diesel fuel, that is, it can supply oxygen component sufficiently at high load and speed in diesel engine. But, the NOx emission of MTBE blended fuel is increased compared with commercial diesel fuel. And. it was tried to analyze not only total hydrocarbon but individual hydrocarbon components from $C_1$to $C_{6}$ in exhaust gas using gas chromatography to seek the reason for remarkable reduction of smoke emission. The results of this study show three conclusions. 1. The smoke omission of the MTBE blended fuel is lower than that of the diesel fuel at all experimental region in direct injection diesel engine. 2. Individual hydrocarbons(C$_1$~ $C_{6}$) as well as total hydrocarbon of oxygenated fuel are reduced remarkably compared with diesel fuel. 3. Smoke emission from diesel engines was strongly depended on oxygen content in fuel regardless of operating condition.

  • The HCCI engine is a prospective internal combustion engine with which high diesel-like efficiencies and very low NOx and particulate emissions can be achieved. However, several technical issues must be resolved before HCCI engines can be used for different applications. One of the issues concerning the HCCI engine is that the operating range of this engine is limited by the rapid pressure rise caused by the release of excessive heat. This heat release is because of the self-accelerated combustion reaction occurring in the engine and the resulting engine knock in the high-load region. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the role of thermal stratification and fuel stratification in reducing the pressure rise rate in an HCCI engine. The concentrations of NOx and CO in the exhaust gas are also evaluated to confirm combustion completeness and NOx emission. The computation is carried out with the help of a multizone code, by using the information on the detailed chemical kinetics and the effect of thermal and fuel stratification on the onset of ignition and rate of combustion. The engine is fueled with dimethyl ether (DME), which allows heat release to occur in two stages, as opposed to methane, which allows for heat release in a single stage.
