  • This paper proposes a multi-core cooperative computing structure considering the heterogeneous features of automotive embedded on-chip software. The automotive embedded software has the heterogeneous execution flow properties for various hardware drives. Software developed with a homogeneous execution flow without considering these properties will incur inefficient overhead due to core latency and load. The proposed method was evaluated on an target board on which a automotive MCU (micro-controller unit) with built-in multi-cores was mounted. We demonstrate an overhead reduction when software including common embedded system tasks, such as ADC sampling, DSP operations, and communication interfaces, are implemented in a heterogeneous execution flow. When we used the proposed method, embedded software was able to take advantage of idle states that occur between heterogeneous tasks to make efficient use of the resources on the board. As a result of the experiments, the power consumption of the board decreased by 42.11% compared to the baseline. Furthermore, the time required to process the same amount of sampling data was reduced by 27.09%. Experimental results validate the efficiency of the proposed multi-core cooperative heterogeneous embedded software execution technique.

  • As the architecture of automotive software is complicated and LOC of software increases, there is an increasing demand for standard operating system. OSEK/VDX defines an industry standard for automotive operating system and middleware. This paper introduces an implementation of RTOS(OSCAR-OSEK) based on OSEK/VDX standard. For better speed of scheduling, we suggest a new method for ready queue implementation considering the characteristic of automotive application software. Also we introduce a method for improving the portability of RTOS on various MCUs. And, we show OSCAR-OSEK implementation and performance test results.

  • Recently, collision avoidance systems are under development to reduce the traffic accidents and driver comfort for automotive radar. Pulse radar can detect their range and velocities of moving vehicles using range gate and FFT(Fast Fourier Transform) of the doppler frequency. We designed the real time DSP(Digital Signal Processing) based automotive UWB(Ultra Wideband) radar, and implemented DSP to detect the range and velocity within 100ms for real time system of the automotive UWB radar. We also measured the range and velocity of a moving vehicle using designed automotive UWB radar in a real road environment.

  • In this paper, we design the hardware platform and implement the embedded software based on the FPGA and the DSP for the automotive 77GHz FMCW radar system. This embedded software is built into the DSP as the multi-tasking architecture to support the basic target detection algorithm and the Ethernet link. The designed GUI(Graphic User Interface) provides ability to adjust parameters associated with the radar performance, to monitor signal processing results, and to download the raw received signal. The designed platform can be used to develop the optimal detection algorithms for the various applications.

  • Various convenient systems which are telecommunication and navigation system and safety system which include Antilock Braking System, Electronic Stability Control, Adaptive Cruise Control have been developed and applied to meet customer needs and each standards since vehicles are used. The complexity of new electronics become significant reason of breakdown especially embedded software failures. Hardware reliability is almost stabilized with long history but software reliability needs more improvements through reliability researches. This new challenge will improve software reliability to clear its overall failures in vehicles. This paper introduces some software reliability models and evaluates embedded software reliability using failure data which occurred during operating.

  • This paper presents a new approach to automotive embedded systems development and validation. Recently automotive embedded systems become even more complex and the product life cycle is getting reduced. To overcome these problems AUTOSAR, a standardized software platform and component based approach, was introduced. Model-based approach has been widely applied in the development of embedded systems and has strong benefits such as early validation and automated testing. In this paper cooperative development and validation of AUTOSAR and model-based approach are introduced and automated testing techniques are proposed. With the proposed techniques we can improve complexity management through increased reuse and exchangeability of software module and automated testing is realized.

  • A reliable automatic passenger counting (APC) system is a key point in transportation related to the efficient scheduling and management of transport routes. In this study, we introduce a lightweight head detection network using deep learning applicable to an embedded system. Currently, object detection algorithms using deep learning have been found to be successful. However, these algorithms essentially need a graphics processing unit (GPU) to make them performable in real-time. So, we modify a Tiny-YOLOv3 network using certain techniques to speed up the proposed network and to make it more accurate in a non-GPU environment. Finally, we introduce an APC system, which is performable in real-time on embedded systems, using the proposed head detection algorithm. We implement and test the proposed APC system on a Samsung ARTIK 710 board. The experimental results on three public head datasets reflect the detection accuracy and efficiency of the proposed head detection network against Tiny-YOLOv3. Moreover, to test the proposed APC system, we measured the accuracy and recognition speed by repeating 50 instances of entering and 50 instances of exiting. These experimental results showed 99% accuracy and a 0.041-second recognition speed despite the fact that only the CPU was used.

  • Traditional implementation schemes for automotive electronic control units look simple, but the tradition schemes need so many coarse works to satisfy the user requirements regarding time constraints whenever their microprocessors are changed. Recently, a movement toward using middle-wares, such as OSEK operating system, has risen in automotive industry. In this paper, we describe how to use the features of operating systems to replace traditional firmware based softwares in points of views of services, such as multitask support, preemption, and realtime property. To show an example, we implemented a parking assistance system as a prototype.

  • Recently automotive software has been more complex and needs to be reduced its development time. Software testing of its functionalities and performance should be conducted in an early development phase to reduce time to market and the development cost. Software functional testing can be performed through simulating the hardware, but it is not guaranteed that evaluation of real-time performance using simulation has enough accuracy. Real-time performance can be precisely evaluated with hardware-in-the-loop simulation, but it costs time and effort to set up hardware for testing. In this paper, we suggest a testing system that can evaluate functional requirements and real time properties with a general-purpose development board in the early development phase. In addition, we improve reusability of the testing system through modularized and layered architecture. With the proposed testing system we can contribute to building reliable testing system at low cost without difficulty.
