  • This study analyzes the impact that accidents and near misses have on clients' and contractors' awareness of safety culture. Due to the unique characteristic of employment structure in Korea, the occurrence of accidents differs by company size, which has relevant implications for the establishment of safety culture. Attention has been drawn to the importance of the management of accidents and near misses, with safety awareness acting as a core factor. A positive effect on the prevention of accidents could be achieved by noting the difference in safety awareness between clients and contractors and suggesting an associated suitable safety management system. In support of this study, a survey was distributed to workers in the automobile manufacturing industry (May-August 2020), and data from a total of 574 workers was collected and analyzed, including 399 clients' worksers and 175 contractors' workers. The questionnaire addressed participants' experiences of accidents and near misses as well as 50 items from the Nordic Occupational Safety Climate Questionnaire. Analysis of the responses was conducted using the methods of frequency analysis, Fisher's exact test, t-test, correlation analysis, and regression analysis. The results demonstrated that clients had more experiences with accidents and near misses compared to contractors. Additional differences between clients and contractors were noted in terms of the safety culture factors of learning, communication, and trust. A correlation was observed between the experience of accidents and safety justice management: for clients and contractors who experienced accidents, safety justice management was 9.4 times higher. Furthermore, clients' and contractors' awareness of employees' commitment to safety was determined to be 28.5 times higher in those who had experienced near misses This study concludes that, in order to improve accident prevention through the management of accidents and near misses, clients must focus on overseeing safety justice management and aspects of safety culture factors, while contractors must focus efforts on managing employees' commitment to safety. In further applications, this study could provide baseline data for health and safety activities in terms of the safety culture of clients and contractors. Further study on the establishment of safety culture as related to employment structure is proposed for future research.

  • Today, the core technology of an automobile is becoming to IT-based convergence system technology. To cope with many kinds of situations and provide the convenience for drivers, various IT technologies are being integrated into automobile system. In this paper, we propose an convergence system, which is called Augmented Driving System (ADS), to provide high safety and convenience of drivers based on image information processing. From imaging sensor, the image data is acquisited and processed to give distance from the front car, lane, and traffic sign panel by the proposed methods. Also, a converged interface technology with camera for gesture recognition and microphone for speech recognition is provided. Based on this kind of system technology, car accident will be decreased although drivers could not recognize the dangerous situations, since the system can recognize situation or user context to give attention to the front view. Through the experiments, the proposed methods achieved over 90% of recognition in terms of traffic sign detection, lane detection, and distance measure from the front car.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study is to evaluate the transfer pattern of multiple trauma patients after acute phase management and to determine whether the time between the surgeon's decision and the actual transfer correlates with the patient's insurance type. Methods: Three hundred ninety-two(392) multiple trauma patients visited the emergency room from January 2011 to April 2013. Among the 143 patients who were admitted by a trauma surgeon, 47 were transferred to another hospital after acute phase management. The age, gender, trauma mechanism, Revised trauma score (RTS), Injury severity score (ISS), insurance type, length of ICU stay and hospital stay were analyzed through a retrospective chart review. Results: The mean age was 47.7 years, and traffic accident was the most common mechanism(26, 55.3%). The mean RTS and ISS were 6.93 and 22.7, respectively. Twenty-five patients(53%) were covered by National health insurance, and 20 patients(42.6%) were covered by automobile insurance. Patients were transferred to primary (4.3%), secondary(80.9%), tertiary(4.3%) and care(10.6%) hospitals. The mean time from transfer decision to actual transfer was significantly longer for patients who were covered by automobile insurance than it was for patients who were covered by national health insurance (p=0.038). Conclusion: An appropriate transfer system at the end of acute phase care is essential for managing trauma centers with limited staffing and facilities. In addition, the mean time from transfer decision to actual transfer seemed to be definitely related to the type of insurance covering the patient.

  • As the automobile industry is developing, the number of deaths and injuries has increased. To reduce the damages from automobile accidents, the government of each country proposes experimental conditions for reproducing the accident and establishes the vehicle safety regulations. Automotive manufacturers are trying to make safer vehicles by satisfying the requirements. The Hybrid III crash test dummy is a standard Anthropomorphic Test Device (ATD) used for measuring the occupant's injuries in a frontal impact test. Since a real crash test using a vehicle is fairly expensive, a computer simulation using the Finite Element Method (F.E.M.) is widely used. Therefore, a detailed and robust F.E. dummy model is needed to acquire more accurate occupant injury data and behavior during the crash test. To achieve this goal, a detailed F.E. model of the Hybrid III 5th percentile female dummy is constructed by using the reverse engineering technique in this research. A modeling process is proposed to construct the F.E. model. The proposed modeling process starts from disassembling the physical dummy. Computer Aided Design (CAD) geometry data is constructed by three-dimensional (3-D) scanning of the disassembled physical dummy model. Based on the geometry data, finite elements of each part are generated. After mesh generation, each part is assembled with other parts using the joints and rigid connection elements. The developed F.E. model of dummy is simulated based on the FMVSS 572 validation regulations. The results of simulation are compared with the results of physical tests.

  • In modern society, automobiles have become an essential means of transportation. It is the only consumable that is worn by contacting the ground among automobile parts. If the tyres are severely worn, the tyres may be break, presenting a risk of a serious accident to the driver. To avoid this risk, drivers should check tyre pressure and tread condition before driving a car. Tyre inflation pressure can be easily measured by TPMS, but in the case of tyre tread conditions, it can be cumbersome when the driver measures it directly using a coin or vernier caliper. This hassle can expose the driver to traffic accidents due to tyre breakage by neglecting to measure the condition of the tyre tread. In this paper, we introduce the contents of research to design an IoT service-based system that can automatically measure automobile tyres, and we verified the possibility of realizing the system by actually implementing and testing some components of the system.
