  • We have all heard sounds that did not sound "right" while riding in an automobile. Objectionable sounds are difficult to find and understand because the sound field is complex and dynamic in the near field of an automobile. Many different noise sources and transmission paths must be understood before an engineering change can be recommended. This paper reviews the fundamental characterization of sound and chscusses the Sound Intensity measurement technique. Sound intensity measurements locate sources and sinks of acoustic energy. Used with narrowband analysis equipment, acoustic noise sources can be identified. Sound intensity measurements are made -in-situ and do not require specmi anechoic facilities. The measurement results in a vector representation of the near field sound field and can discriminate between multiple sound sources.d sources.

  • Acoustic holography is applied to automobile aeroacoustic noise. Automobile aeroacoustic noise has low coherence due to multiple independent sources and measurement noise. This paper discusses the reliability of acoustic holography on this low coherence condition. Main subjects are the number and position of reference microphones, which is used for a step-by-step scanning method, and measurement noise. A real automobile experiment verifies the results.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify $PM_{2.5}$ sources and to estimate their contributions to the border of Yongin-Suwon area, based on the analysis of the $PM_{2.5}$ mass concentration and the associated inorganic elements, ions and carbon components. The contribution of $PM_{2.5}$ sources were estimated by using a positive matrix factorization (PMF) model to identify air emission sources. For this study, $PM_{2.5}$ samples were collected from May, 2007 to April, 2008. The inorganic elements were analyzed by an ICP-AES. The ionic components in $PM_{2.5}$ were analyzed by an Ie. The carbon components were also analyzed by DRI/OGC analyzer. After performing PMF modeling, a total of 12 sources were identified and their contributions were quantitatively estimated. The contributions from each emission source were as follows: 11.3% from oil combustion source, 3.4% from bus/highway source, 5.8% from diesel vehicle source, 4.7% from gasoline vehicle source, 8.8% from biomass burning source, 15.1 % from secondary sulfate, 5.2% from secondary nitrate source, 13.4% from industrial related source, 4.1% from Cl-rich source, 19.6% from soil related source, 1.0% from aged sea salt, and 7.4% from coal combustion source, respectively. This study provides basic information on the major sources affecting air quality, and then it will help to effectively control $PM_{2.5}$ in this study area.

  • In this work, Altair Engineering's vibroacoustic modeling approach is used to simulate the acoustic signature of a simplified automobile in a wind tunnel. The modeling approach relies on a two step procedure involving simulation and extraction of acoustic sources using a high fidelity Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation followed by propagation of the acoustic energy within the structure and passenger compartment using a structural dynamics solver. The tools necessary to complete this process are contained within Altair's HyperWorks CAE software suite. The CFD simulations are performed using AcuSolve and the structural simulations are performed using OptiStruct. This vibroacoustics simulation methodology relies on calculation of the acoustic sources from the flow solution computed by AcuSolve. The sources are based on Lighthill's analogy and are sampled directly on the acoustic mesh. Once the acoustic sources have been computed, they are transformed into the frequency domain using a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) with advanced sampling and are subsequently used in the structural acoustics model. Although this approach does require the CFD solver to have knowledge of the acoustic simulation domain a priori, it avoids modeling errors introduced by evaluation of the acoustic source terms using dissimilar meshes and numerical methods. The aforementioned modeling approach is demonstrated on the Hyundai Simplified Model (HSM) geometry in this work. This geometry contains flow features that are representative of the dominant noise sources in a typical automobile design; namely vortex shedding from the passenger compartment A-pillar and bluff body shedding from the side view mirrors. The geometry also contains a thick poroelastic material on the interior that acts to reduce the acoustic noise. This material is modeled using a Biot material formulation during the structural acoustic simulation. Successful prediction of the acoustic noise within the HSM geometry serves to validate the vibroacoustic modeling approach for automotive applications.

  • About 100 years after the start of mass production by American car maker Ford in 1913, the automobile industry has come to a major transformation in 100 years. In this transformation period, automakers are facing the biggest challenge of converting power sources, the basis of automobiles, from existing internal combustion engines to electric vehicles. Hybrid vehicles have been released in Japan since the late 1990s, and changes in automobile power sources have occurred early. In order to gain global leadership in hybrid vehicles, Japanese automakers and the Japanese government joined forces to promote the growth of the domestic hybrid vehicle market. The government has implemented a policy to substantially subsidize the high price of hybrid cars compared to internal combustion engine cars by providing purchase subsidies and tax benefits to buyers. Toyota has increased its line-up of hybrid cars around the Prius and has further strengthened communication with customers for the sale of hybrid vehicles. As a result of continuing these efforts for about 20 years, the percentage of Japan's hybrid vehicle market in 2022 reached 51% for passenger cars. Recently, each country has been setting and promoting aggressive goals for electric vehicles that require a wider range of physical and institutional infrastructure than hybrid vehicles. This study aims to assess the growth of electric vehicles by looking at the trend of hybrid vehicles and how they've been distributed in the Japanese market.

  • This paper describes a noble fault diagnosis method using inter node search technique in PN model. First, a complicated fault system is modeled as PN graphic expressions. Next, to find out sources for faults on which we focus, the PN model is analyzed using the backward chaining of T-invariance. In this step, the technique of inter node search is applied for reducing some range of sources in a fault. Also, colnposing method of incidence matrix in PN is proposed. Then, it makes the diagnosis system to very flelible system because new knowledges about the sources in a fault can be added easily to conventional systems. Finally, the proposed method is applied to the automobile trouble diagnosis system to confirm the validity of the method.
