  • Measurement protocols for hand anthropometry have been studied for ergonomic product design. The present study developed a 3D semi-automatic measurement protocol (3D-SAMP) which semi-automatically measures various hand dimensions using a 3D scanner. The 3D-SAMP was compared with the conventional direct measurement method (DMM) to examine its effectiveness. The 3D-SAMP consists of (1) fabricating a plaster cast of the hand, (2) placing landmarks on the plaster hand, (3) scanning the plaster hand with a 3D scanner, (4) identifying automatically the positions of the landmarks on the digital hand, and (5) extracting automatically hand anthropometric measurements (lengths, widths, thicknesses, and circumferences). An evaluation experiment conducted in the study found the 3D-SAMP preferred to the DMM in terms of reliability (the number of dimensions exceeding the variability criteria SD=2 mm and CV=5% : 3D-SAMP =2 and DMM=24) and ease of measurement (3D-SAMP=5.2 and DMM=4.3 out of 7). The 3D-SAMP can be applied to ergonomic design of a hand-held product.

  • This paper describes a new automated simulation system for micromachines whose size range $10^{-6}$ to $10^{-3}$ m. An automic finite element (FE) mesh generation technique, which is bases on the fuzzy knowledge processing and computation al geometry technique, is incorporated into the system, together with one of commerical FE analysis codes, MARC, and one of commerical solid modelers, Designbase. The system allows a geometry model of concern to be automatically converted to different FE models, depending on physical phenomena of micromachines to be analyzed, i,e. electrostatic analysis, stress analysis, modal analysis and so on. The FE models are then automatically analyzed using the FE analysis code. Among a whole process of analysis, the definition of a geometry model, the designation of local node patterns and the assignment of material properties and boundary conditions onto the geometry model are only the interactive process to be done by a user. The interactive operations can be processed in a few minutes. The other processes which are time consuming and labour-intensive in conventional CAE systems are fully automatically performed in a popular engineering workstation environment. This automated simulation system is successfully applied to evaluate an electrostatic micro wobble actuator.

  • PVAP (Pressure Vessel Analysis Program V1.0) was developed by adopting the finite element analysis program ANSYS V6.0, and Microsoft Visual Basic V6.0 was also utilized for the interfacing and handling of input and output data during the analysis. PVAP offers the end user the ability to design and analyze vessels in strict accordance with ASME Section VIII, Division 2. More importantly, the user is not required to make any design decisions during the input of the vessel. PVAP consists of three analysis modules for the finite element analysis of the primary components of pressure vessel such as head, shell, nozzle, and skirt. In each module, finite element analysis can be performed automatically only if the end user gives the dimension of the vessel. Furthermore, the calculated results are compared and evaluated in accordance with the criteria given in ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII, Division 2. In particular, heat transfer analysis and consecutive thermal stress analysis for the junction between skirt and head can be carried out automatically in the skirt-tohead module. Finally, report including the above results is created automatically in Microsoft Word format.

  • Video digests provide an effective way of confirming a video content rapidly due to their very compact form. By watching a digest, users can easily check whether a specific content is worth seeing in full. The impression created by the digest greatly influences the user's choice in selecting video contents. We propose a novel method of automatic digest creation that evokes a joyful impression through the created digest by exploiting smile/laughter facial expressions as emotional cues of joy from video. We assume that a digest presenting smiling/laughing faces appeals to the user since he/she is assured that the smile/laughter expression is caused by joyful events inside the video. For detecting smile/laughter faces we have developed a neural network based method for classifying facial expressions. Video segmentation is performed by automatic shot detection. For creating joyful digests, appropriate shots are automatically selected by shot ranking based on the smile/laughter detection result. We report the results of user trials conducted for assessing the visual impression with automatically created 'joyful' digests produced by our system. The results show that users tend to prefer emotional digests containing laughter faces. This result suggests that the attractiveness of automatically created video digests can be improved by extracting emotional cues of the contents through automatic facial expression analysis as proposed in this paper.

  • Music summarization refers to a technique which automatically extracts the most important and representative segments in music content. In this paper, we propose and evaluate a technique which provides the repeated part in music content as music summary. For extracting a repeated segment in music content, the proposed algorithm uses the weighted sum of similarity measures based on multi-level vector quantization for fixed-length summary or optimal-length summary. For similarity measures, count-based similarity measure and distance-based similarity measure are proposed. The number of the same codeword and the Mahalanobis distance of features which have same codeword at the same position in segments are used for count-based and distance-based similarity measure, respectively. Fixed-length music summary is evaluated by measuring the overlapping ratio between hand-made repeated parts and automatically generated ones. Optimal-length music summary is evaluated by calculating how much automatically generated music summary includes repeated parts of the music content. From experiments we observed that optimal-length summary could capture the repeated parts in music content more effectively in terms of summary length than fixed-length summary.

  • Recently, in accordance with the introduction of Digital Photogrammetry Systems the use of Digital ortho-photo images have increased and progressed in the study which extract the features from digital ortho-photo image semi-automatically or automatically. However, there are a limit. It has proved in many studies that recognition of the attribution or the features from panchromatic aerial photo is restricted. In this study, I compared color aerial images with panchromatic aerial images and analyzed the characteristics of color aerial images and feature entities which can be extracted semi-automatically. I analyzed extracted feature entities are compared with digital map at a scale of 1:5,000 have constructed in National Geography Institute. With this result, I analyzed the capability of feature extraction and proposed a plan for the study in the future.

  • In this paper, automatic shot panorama construction method is presented. For construction of panorama image, conventional panoramic techniques manually took two panorama members, but the proposed method automatically takes panorama members according to moving camera and constructs panorama image. The panorama members are automatically selected and taken by tracking region over image stream form camera. Matching region for panorama including the tracking region in the members is selected and applied by invariant feature panoramic method. Our method can automatically shot panorama members and has merit of high processing speed. In the experiments, it was shown that the algorithm required about 0.89 second in processing time, about two times shorter than existing invariant feature based one(6), for color images of $320{\times}240$ size.

  • This paper proposes an evolutionary model for automatically generating artificial creatures of various shapes and colors according to insect ecology. This model offers a novel way to naturally evolve the shapes and colors of artificial creatures. The evolutionary model used in our research is based on Genetic Algorithms (GA). In this paper, artificial Computer Graphics(CG) creatures develop into various shapes and colors according to the evolutionary model. Later, they can be used as CG animated characters. This model also solves the problem of reducing the time and labor cost for mass production of various characters. It could be used in such areas as the cavalry battle scene in Disney's animation, “Mulan”. Our approach has two steps. At first, artificial creatures move according to information gathered form the five senses. This information is also used for generating the shapes of the five sense organs[1]. Then, based on the GA, evolutionary mode[2], we prepare prototype creatures, which evolve into various shapes and different colors in alternating generations. Finally, our evolutionary model successfully generates various character shapes and colors automatically.

  • The mine-detection system, which is one of the various mission equipments for Ground Vehicle System, detects mine under the ground. The mine detection sensors comprised of Metal Detection(MD) sensor and Ground Penetration Radar(GPR) are attached on the end of the multi-DOF manipulator. The manipulator moves the sensor to sweep mine areas keeping the pre-determined distance between the sensor and ground to enhance mine detection performance. The detection system can be operated automatically, semi-automatically and manually. When the detection system is operated automatically, the sensor should avoid collisions with unexpected obstacles which may exist on the ground. Two types of ultra-sonic sensors were developed for the mine detection sensor system to keep the appropriate gap between sensor and the ground to avoid the obstacles. Also, mine place marking device was developed.
