  • This study developed an automatic tool change system of the SMA-based tool clamping device for applications of micro-machine tools. This paper first describes clamping and unclamping procedures of the automatic tool change system and its basic configuration. Second, it presents fabrication techniques of components, such as a heating/cooling system and a tool loader. Finally, it describes automatic tool change test conducted with a prototype in which the fabrication techniques of components were employed. As the results of the test, times needed for clamping and unclamping operations were estimated to 18(s) and 8(s) respectively. The experimental results confirm that the proposed automatic tool change system can be sucessfully applied to micro-machine tools.

  • Recently, Many studies have been undergoing to reduce a working time in a field of machine tool. There are two ways of reducing working time; to reduce actual working time by heighten spindle speed and to reduce stand-by time by shortening tool exchange time. Automatic tool change system belongs to the latter case. Fixed address type automatic tool change system that is being developed in this study can store more number of tool in small space than magazine transfer type automatic tool changer as well as shorten tool exchange time. In this paper, a simplified equivalent model of finite element method in order to analyze frame structure of fixed address type automatic tool change system is presented.

  • An intelligent polishing robot automation system is developed. Automatic Tool Change System(A.T.C.), Tool Posture Angle Control, and Robot Program for Polishing Application are developed and integrated into a robotic system that consists of a robot, pneumatic finding tool, and finding abrasives (papers and special films). A.T.C. is specifically designed to exchange whole grinding tool set for complete unmanned operation. Tool Posture Angle Control is developed to give a certain skew angle rather than right angle to tools on the surface for best finishing results. A.T.C. and Tool Posture Angle Control is controlled by a PC and the robot controller. Also, there have been some considerations on enhancing the performance of the system. Some elastic material is inserted between the grinding pad and the holder for better grinding contact. The robot path data is generated automatically from the NC data of previous machining process.

  • An effective die-polishing robot system is developed. ATC (Automatic Tool Change), tool posture angle control, and robot program for polishing application are developed and integrated into a robotic system that consists of a robot, pneumatic grinding tool, and grinding abrasives (papers and special films). ATC is specifically designed to exchange whole grinding tool set for complete unmanned operation. A tool posture angle control system is developed for the tools to maintain a specified skew angle rather than right angle on the surface for best finishing results. A PC and the robot controller control ATC and tool posture angle. Also, there have been more considerations on enhancing the performance of the system. • Recent advances in computer technology have brought more dependence on software to railway systems. Hence, the safety assurance of the vital software running on the railway system is very critical task and yet, not many works have been done. While much efforts have been reported to improve electronic hardware's safety, not so much systematic approaches to evaluate software's safety. In this paper, we suggested an automated analysis tool for S/W change impact in railway system, and presented its result of implementation. The analysis items in the implemented tool had referred to the international standards in relation to the software for railway system, such as IEC 61508 and IEC 62279. In these international standards, 'change impact analysis' for railway system S/W has to be required mandatorily. The proposed tool can be utilized at the assessment stage and also the software development stage.

  • With the progress in process automation, it becomes necessary that a robot should have various sophisticated capabilities. A robot programming language is a tool that can give a robot such capabilities without any change in robot architecture. Especially a task level automatic programming system enables a robot able to perform a job intelligently. Therefore anyone who is not an expert on welding or robot programming can easily use it. In this research, basic automatic welding program is combined with workspace information, which makes users do an arc welding job automatically.

  • The study on the progress of automatic machining system has been active centering at the CNC machine tools recently to lead the applied production technology like unmaned machining to the practical level, and to make these application more efficient, they require detective method for tool wear and breakage while machining. In this study chiefly on turning, first derive cutting force about the tool surface by the cutting resistant sensor and with which change into electric signal and compare with the standards to make the tool life detection system to let know the tool life and study its application; the cutting resistance detected by the cutting resistant sensor has increased to the level of standards, the measuring system which can decide whether we change tools on the basis of comperative circuit is shown to be very reliable model for cutting tool life detection system.

  • The problems occurred when developing a automatic wheel deburring system are to make effective flexibility in model change and the irregularity of the position/shape of the burr, to select optimal robotic manufacturing process and to develope optimal end effector. The locations where burr exists are on flange, rim and spoke. Here will be discussed the optimal solution for the removal of rim burr by using robot. The research can be summarized as the automatic robot path generation by recognizing rim contour and automatic deburring process technique. Various rim contour data is generated automatically when the sensor which is fixed to robot is moving with the parallel motion to the wheel center axis and this generated data is transferred to the data storage system and converted to the robot path data. The robotic tool system which is suitable to the rim deburring process is developed by integrating tool, compliance function and sensor. And factory automation system controlled by robot controller and PC is developed. This system shows good productivity and flexibility.

  • In this research, a vision system for detecting tool breakage which is hardly detected by such indirect in-process measurement method as acoustic emission, cutting torque and motor current was developed and embedded into a PC-NC system. The vision system consists of CMOS image sensors, a slit beam laser generator and an image grabber board. Slit beam laser was emitted on the tool surface to separate the tool geometry well from the various obstacles surrounding the tool. An image of tool is captured through two steps of signal processing, that is, median filtering and thresholding and then the tool is estimated normal or broken by use of change of the centroid of the captured image. An air curtain made by the jetting high-pressure air in front of the lens was devised to prevent the vision system from being contaminated by scattered coolant, cutting chips in cutting process. To embed the vision system to a Siemens PC-NC controller 840D NC, an HMI(Human Machine Interface) program was developed under the Windows 95 operating system of MMC103. The developed HMI is placed in a sub window of the main window of 840D and this program can be activated or deactivated either by a soft key on the operating panel or M codes in the NC part program. As the tool breakage is detected, the HMI program emit a command for automatic tool change or send alarm to the NC kernel. Evaluation test in a high speed tapping center showed the developed system was successful in detection of the small-radius tool breakage.
