  • A flexible tool is developed for automatic finishing of curved surfaces without any complicated control technique on three-axes machining center. The tool is made of thermosetting polyurethane elastomer on the surface of which aluminum oxide abrasives are mounted. Performance and durability of the tool are examined by finishing ball-end milled surfaces of high-alloyed tool steel. It is demonstrated that the tool removes cusp successfully without changing overall surface shape in relatively short time.

  • A load-following operation in APR+ nuclear plants is necessary to reduce the need to adjust the boric acid concentration and to efficiently control the control rods for flexible operation. In particular, a disproportion in the axial flux distribution, which is normally caused by a load-following operation in a reactor core, causes xenon oscillation because the absorption cross-section of xenon is extremely large and its effects in a reactor are delayed by the iodine precursor. A model predictive control (MPC) method was used to design an automatic load-following controller for the integrated thermal power level and axial shape index (ASI) control for APR+ nuclear plants. Some tracking controllers employ the current tracking command only. On the other hand, the MPC can achieve better tracking performance because it considers future commands in addition to the current tracking command. The basic concept of the MPC is to solve an optimization problem for generating finite future control inputs at the current time and to implement as the current control input only the first control input among the solutions of the finite time steps. At the next time step, the procedure to solve the optimization problem is then repeated. The support vector regression (SVR) model that is used widely for function approximation problems is used to predict the future outputs based on previous inputs and outputs. In addition, a genetic algorithm is employed to minimize the objective function of a MPC control algorithm with multiple constraints. The power level and ASI are controlled by regulating the control banks and part-strength control banks together with an automatic adjustment of the boric acid concentration. The 3-dimensional MASTER code, which models APR+ nuclear plants, is interfaced to the proposed controller to confirm the performance of the controlling reactor power level and ASI. Numerical simulations showed that the proposed controller exhibits very fast tracking responses.

  • An automatic face recognition(AFR) of individuals is a significant problem in the development of computer vision. An AFR consists of two major parts which are detection of face region and recognition process, and the overall performance of AFR is determined by each. In this paper, the face region is acquired using chromaticity space, but this face region is a simple rectangle which doesn´t consider the shape information. By applying deformable templates to the face region, we can locate the position of the eyes in images. With the face region and the eye location information, more precise face region can be extract from the image. Because processing time is critical in real-time system, we use simplified eye templates and the modified energy function for the efficiency. We can get a good detection performance in experiments.

  • This study provides a method to detect blood vessels shape using image processing techniques with the help of fluoroscopy equipments, providing high precision information about vessels' location and shape of inner path. It will assist for checking and monitoring the position of operating tools during vascular interventional treatment. The blood vessels shapes are gathered with X-ray images when a fluorescent medications are injected into patient's vessel and those images are processed for getting the boundaries of vessels. Then these data are merged with real-time CT-images. These image processing systems and procedures recognize the catheter, though continued computing algorithms are very useful for observer part on the automatic control system.

  • We developed an machine vision method for navigation control of a traveling automatic guided vehicle(AGV) on desired trajectory with guided marks. The formulated EDF accumulates the edge magnitude for edge directions. The EDF has distinctive peak points at the vicinity of trajectory directions due to the directional and the positional continuities of desired trajectory. Examining the EDF by its shape parameters of the local maxima and symmetry axis results in identifying whether or not change in traveling direction of an AGV has occurred. Simulation results show that the presented method is useful for navigation control of AGV.

  • This study was to evaluate the usability of self-developed phantom for evaluating automatic exposure control (AEC) using three-dimensions (3D) printer. 3D printer of fused deposition modeling (FDM) type was utilized to make the self-developed AEC phantom and image acquisitions were conducted by two different type of scanners. The self-developed AEC phantom consisted of four different size of portions. As a result, two types of phantom (pyramid and pentagon shape) were created according to the combination of the layers. For evaluating the radiation dose with the two types of phantom, the values of tube current, computed tomography dose index volume (CTDIvol), and dose length product (DLP) were compared. As a result, it was confirmed that the values of tube current were properly reflected according to the thickness, and the CTDIvol and DLP were not significantly changed regardless of AEC functions of different scanners. In conclusion, the self-developed phantom by using 3D printer could assess whether the AEC function works well. So, we confirmed the possibility that a self-made phantom could replace the commercially expensive AEC performance evaluation phantom.

  • In numerical control (NC) machining, a machining error in equipment generally occurs for a variety of reasons. If there is a change in direction in the NC code, the characteristics of the automatic acceleration or deceleration function cause an overlap of each axis of the acceleration and deceleration zones, which in turn causes a shift in the actual processing path. Many studies have been conducted for error calibration of the edge as caused by automatic acceleration or deceleration in NC machining. This paper describes a geometric interpretation of the shape and processing characteristics of the operating NC device. The paper then describes a way to determine a feedrate that achieves the desired tolerance by using linear and parabolic profiles. Experiments were conducted by the validate equations using a three-axis NC machine. The results show that the machining errors were smaller than the machine resolution. The results also clearly demonstrate that the NC machine with the developed system can successfully predict machining errors induced with a change in direction.

  • In this paper, a new approach to acquire the cross-sentional image for automatic solder joint inspection of double-sided PCB using X-ray source is presented. We designed the apparatus with fixed X-ray source to realize the cross-sectional image by tunning object and detector synchronously. The cross-sectional images are captured at several view angle of X-ray source, the geometric image distortions caused by view angle and the shape of image intensifier are compensated. The precision variation of cross-sectional image by the change of view angle was investigated. Also we acquired the cross-sectional image to the solder joint of double-sided PCB and reconstructed the shape of solder joint.

  • This paper presents a finger-shaped multisensor system which can measure the tyep and position of a target surface by contactl. The multi-sensor system consists of a sphere-shpaed optical tactile sensor located at the finger tip and a force/torque sensor located at the joint of a finger. The optial tactile sensor determines the type and position of the target surface using the shape and position of the CCD image of the touching area generated by a contact between the sensor and the taget surface. The force/torque sensor also determines the position and surface normal vector by applying the distributionof forces and torques t the contact point to the equations of finger shape. The measurements on the position and surface normal vector at a contact point obtined by two individual sensors are fused using a statistical method. The integrated sensor system has 0.8mm error in position measurement and 1.31$^{\circ}$ error in normal vector measurement. The developed sensor system has many applications, such as autonomous compliance control, automatic grasping and recognition, etc.

  • This paper provides the resuIts on the evaluation of dynamic characteristics of the optimized shells. Five fundamental technologies such as computer-aided geometric design, automatic mesh generation, shell finite element, design sensitivity analysis and shell optimization process, are used for shell optimization maximizing the fundamental natural frequency. A dome shell is adopted for the shell shape optimization and the dynamic characteristic of the optimized shell such as the variation of natural frequencies is then investigated. From the investigation, more constraint functions related to shell natural frequencies is necessarily required to effectively control dynamic characteristics of the optimized shells.
