  • The individual control of machines or processors is subordinate to the management of the entire manufacturing production function. This distinction is necessary in order to provide the appropriate separation of and detailed focus on process activities while still providing acceptable interfaces for the upload of data and the download of instructions, recipes, or commands.

  • The automated part quality inspection poses many challenges to the engineers, especially when the part features to be inspected become complicated. A large quantity of part inspection at a faster rate should be relied upon computerized, automated inspection methods, which requires advanced quality control approaches. In this context, this work uses innovative methods in remote part tracking and quality control with the aid of the modern equipment and application of support vector machine (SVM) learning approach to predict the outcome of the quality control process. The classifier equations are built on the data obtained from the experiments and analyzed with different kernel functions. From the analysis, detailed outcome is presented for six different cases. The results indicate the robustness of support vector classification for the experimental data with two output classes.

  • In this paper, in order to overcome shortcomings of manual inspection for the automotive PWM Shaft, we developed an automated inline inspection system. The automated inline inspection system consists of the work feeder unit, conveying unit, outer diameter check unit, run-out and roundness check unit, machine vision, defective separation unit and status alarm unit. We used the machine vision system for automatic inspection process and designed the inline systems for automatic feeding and selecting process. Also the repeated operation test was performed in order to verify the precision and reliability of the proposed automated inline inspection system.

  • This paper discusses an optimal cyclic scheduling problem for a FMC (Flexible Manufacturing Cell) modeled by a two-machine flowshop with two machining centers with APC's (Automated Pallet Changers), an AGV (Automated Guided Vehicle) and loading and unloading stations. Cyclic production in which similar patterns of production is repeated can significantly reduce the production lead-time and WIP (Work-In-Process) in such flexible, automated system. Thus we want to find an optimal cyclic schedule that minimizes the cycle time in each cycle. However, the existence of APC's as buffer storage for WIP makes the problem intractable (i.e., NP-complete). We propose an practical approximation algorithm that minimizes, instead of each cycle time, its upper bound. Performances of this algorithm are validated by the way of computer simulations.

  • This paper is to analyze the travel distance and the transport size of the vehicle when the AGV carries multiple-load in the tandem automated guided vehicle systems. The size of multiple-load represents the number of load that the AGV can carry simultaneously. The AGV can carry simultaneously multiple-load that load types are different. The transport system of the manufacturing system is a tandem configuration automated guided vehicle system, which is based on the partitioning of all the stations into several non-overlapping single closed loops. Each loop divided has only one vehicle traveling unidirectionally around it. The AGV of each loop has to have sufficient transport capacity that can carry all loads for given unit time. In this paper, the average loaded travel distance and the size of feasible multiple-load of the vehicle are analyzed. A numerical example is shown.

  • The purposes of this paper are the review and derivation of design characteristics for the new construction of the practical flexible manufacturing system. The basic ideas to analyze the manufacturing system which is the automatically operated are dependant on the various manufacturing procedures in factory. The practical flexible manufacturing systems have various mechanical subsystems appropriated fur the final manufacturing products. Therefore the systems have the various kinds of hardwares as well as softwares. We study the software for the practical flexible manufacturing system designed and developed in the Halla University with the related company. Specially the design concepts and using specifications of all subsystems which are composed of mechanical and electronic movements of the product are analyzed and introduced in this dissertation.

  • In automated manufacturing systems, Automated Guided Vehicle(AGV) Systems are increasingly important in material handling and manufacturing operations. A considerably flexible AGV system needs to be operated with maximum effectiveness. This paper develops an algorithm for the determination of the entering point and the number of AGVs required in the Flow Shop Type FMS. We consider an AGV used as a carrier and mobile workstation. For the limited number of AGV, the entering point of an AGV on a simple loop is determined in order to maximize the utilization of AGVs. For the unlimited number of AGVs, the number of AGVs required in the FMS is determined on the basis of the entering point of AGVs. The result by the algorithm may be used as a criterion on the control of material flow and the assignment of AGVs in the FMS. A numerical example is given to illustrate the algorithm.

  • It is essential to construct on efficient material flow system for the successful introduction of automated manufacturing systems. Automated Guided Vehicle System(AGVS) ploys a significant role more and more in modern manufacturing environments, because of the flexibility and the precision they offer. However, as the size and the complexity of systems increase, the problems of dispatching, routing and scheduling of AGVs became complicated due to their independent and asynchronous demands. In this paper, we review relevant papers, and provide a new and more efficient method for partitioning the AGV system by introducing the concept of Central Path. This method named Central Path design has advantages, since each partitioned workstation group is served by one AGV and the material handling between groups is performed by special AGV that is used for the Central Path. Therefore the congestion problems never occur. Furthermore Central Path Design has a high flexibility for alteration and extension of system. Finally, we demonstrate its efficiency using simulation.

  • This study suggests a procedure for designing cellular manufacturing systems (CMS) which are combined with automated guided vehicles (AGVs) using a tandem configuration. So far most of the previous studies have dealt with conventional design problems not considering the layout and the characteristics of transporters used in CMS. A mathematical model is developed using the service time to perform material transfers as a suitable meassure. The service capacity of AGVs and space limitations are also reflected in this model. As the model can be shown strongly NP-hard, a heuristic algorithm is presented, in which each cell is temporarily formed using both the set covering model and similarity coefficients, and then locations of the cells are determined by means of tabu search and finally machine perturbations are carried out. An example problem is solved to demonstrate the algorithm developed.

  • In this paper jobshop scheduling problem was considered on automated manufacturing systems with the closed loop and unidirectional material handling system. The objective of this research is to develop and evaluate heuristic scheduling procedures to improve productivity by minimizing makespan. Especially travel time of material handling system as well as processing time was considered in the proposed algorithms, A new heuristic algorithms are proposed and illustrates the proposed algorithm. The heuristic algorithms are implemented for various cases. The results show that the proposed algorithms provide better solutions in productivity, frequency, job waiting time and the number of waiting jobs than the random scheduling algorithm.
