Diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease through measurement of anti-beta amyloid antibody in patient's serum

  • Amyloid beta ($A{\beta}$) is believed one of the major pathogens of Alzheimer's disease (AD), and the reduction of $A{\beta}$ is considered a primary therapeutic target. Immunization with $A{\beta}$ can reduce $A{\beta}$ burden and pathological features in transgenic AD model mouse. This means $anti-A{\beta}$ autoantibodies may have a role in AD pathology. Recent findings suggest $anti-A{\beta}$ autoantibodies level decrease in AD patients. The early detection of AD is important for treatment of this disease. However, diagnosis on AD has only been possible through limited methods such as neuropsychological examination or MRI. To investigate whether it was possible to detect the presence and different levels of naturally occurring $anti-A{\beta}$ autoantibodies in the plasma of patients with AD and age-matched controls. An advanced ELISA was performed to detect levels of naturally occurring $anti-A{\beta}$ autoantibodies in the plasma. The level of $anti-A{\beta}$ auto-antibodies from patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease or stroke and from normal controls were compared to that of AD patients. Our results showed a significantly lower $anti-A{\beta}$ autoantibodies level in AD compared to those with other neurological diseases or control. The level of $anti-A{\beta}$ autoantibodies in the serum may be used to diagnose the presence of AD.

Development of Agriculture Auto Hose Reel by using Wheeled Mobile Robot (바퀴구동 로봇을 이용한 농업용 자동 호스 릴 장치 개발)

  • This paper is a study for developing an agriculture automatic hose reel of mobile robot. One of the important works in farming is pesticide spraying because it is related to the growth of crops. Therefore, we develop an automatic reel hose and mobile robot. Conducting kinematic analysis of steering performance, the mobile robot is designed to move smoothly even in a small space, and that is verified by simulation. To increase supplying accuracy of the automatic hose reel, the mobile robot use detecting tension mechanism on a hose and a device for the hose deployment. We conduct performance and on-farm evaluation. This system has been maximum speed of 2.5m/s, driving accuracy of ${\pm}0.18^{\circ}$ and driving safety speed of 2m/s. The system would solve an aging population and shortage of workforce in agriculture.

Design of Efficient frequency Offset Estimator for MB-OFDM based UWB Systems (MB-OFDM 기반 UWB 시스템을 위한 효율적인 주파수 옵셋 추정기의 설계)

  • This paper proposes an efficient frequency offset estimation algorithm for MB-OFDM based UWB systems. The time-frequency interleaving in MB-OFDM extends the time-interval between two transmitted OFDM symbols in the same sub-band. The extended time-interval causes not only the degradation of the system performance by reducing frequency offset estimation range, but also the increase of the hardware complexity by requiring the larger number of storing samples. The proposed estimation algorithm expands the estimation range by applying the proposed sign detection scheme. Simulation results show that the estimation range is increased above 30 ppm compared with a conventional auto-correlation based scheme. The estimation is performed on only one sub-band, and the frequency offsets of the others are calculated by relation to center frequency. This way reduced the number of the storing samples by about l/3. The frequency offset estimator with the proposed algorithm was designed into the architecture which minimizes hardware overhead by time-sharing operators and memory units, and which was synthesized to gate-level circuits using $0.13{\mu}m$ CMOS technology, and the total gates were about 47K.

Auto-detection of Halo CME Parameters as the Initial Condition of Solar Wind Propagation

  • Halo coronal mass ejections (CMEs) originating from solar activities give rise to geomagnetic storms when they reach the Earth. Variations in the geomagnetic field during a geomagnetic storm can damage satellites, communication systems, electrical power grids, and power systems, and induce currents. Therefore, automated techniques for detecting and analyzing halo CMEs have been eliciting increasing attention for the monitoring and prediction of the space weather environment. In this study, we developed an algorithm to sense and detect halo CMEs using large angle and spectrometric coronagraph (LASCO) C3 coronagraph images from the solar and heliospheric observatory (SOHO) satellite. In addition, we developed an image processing technique to derive the morphological and dynamical characteristics of halo CMEs, namely, the source location, width, actual CME speed, and arrival time at a 21.5 solar radius. The proposed halo CME automatic analysis model was validated using a model of the past three halo CME events. As a result, a solar event that occurred at 03:38 UT on Mar. 23, 2014 was predicted to arrive at Earth at 23:00 UT on Mar. 25, whereas the actual arrival time was at 04:30 UT on Mar. 26, which is a difference of 5 hr and 30 min. In addition, a solar event that occurred at 12:55 UT on Apr. 18, 2014 was estimated to arrive at Earth at 16:00 UT on Apr. 20, which is 4 hr ahead of the actual arrival time of 20:00 UT on the same day. However, the estimation error was reduced significantly compared to the ENLIL model. As a further study, the model will be applied to many more events for validation and testing, and after such tests are completed, on-line service will be provided at the Korean Space Weather Center to detect halo CMEs and derive the model parameters.

  • As a part of NERI:;, Truck Shipment Safety Information is divided into Optimal Route Guidance system and Emergency Response system. This study which is for developing of Truck Shipment Incident Emergency Response System intends to prevent or early response damage caused by incidents through realtime monitoring about the position and the state of Hazard material transport truck. For this, we divide it into three scenarios; realtime monitoring, management of incidents, information provision to related organizations and present functional requirements and architecture coming with each scenario. As a result of the first step among total three steps, it would able to not only realtime management of trucks but also guide for auto-enforcement or management about illegal act like dumping scrapped material. It is now under examination about position of detection and technology of communication to application. From now on, it is expect to test in the range of Metropolitan after selecting appropriate technology.

  • The study of IP address allocation in MANET can be categories into Stateful and Stateless. The one, special node monitors other nodes' IP address and allocates IF address. And the other, node generates IP address by itself. Nodes in MANET have mobility and restricted resource, so Stateless is more suitable than Stateful. But, in Stateless, node requires DAD process because of unique IP address allocation. And Dos attack can be happened in DAD precess. In this paper, we propose a security method on preventing DoS attack against DAD in MANET using one-way hash function. Since, Computation of one-way hash function is suitable for nodes' restricted resource character in MANET. And we evaluate performance using NS2 and compare with other security method which is CGA using signature.

  • Recently, a self-camera that generates and distributes a large amount of moving images has been rapidly increasing due to the appearance of SNS such as Facebook, Instagram, and Tweet using mobile. In particular, the amount of SNS connections using mobile phones is significantly increasing in terms of usage, number of connections, and usage time. However, the use of a self-recording system using a smartphone by itself is extremely limited not only in terms of usage but also in frequency of use. In addition, the conventional unattended recording system is a very expensive system that automatically records and tracks an object to be photographed using an infrared signal. Therefore, this paper developed a low cost unmanned recording system using mobile phone. The system consists of a commercial mobile camera, a servomotor for moving the camera from side to side, a microcontroller for controlling the motor, and a commercial wireless Bluetooth earset for video audio input. And it is an unmanned automation system using mobile, and anyone can record image by self image tracking.

  • Recently, there have been a lot of researches on the whole face replacement system, but it is not easy to obtain stable results due to various attitudes, angles and facial diversity. To produce a natural synthesis result when replacing the face shown in the video image, technologies such as face area detection, feature extraction, face alignment, face area segmentation, 3D attitude adjustment and facial transposition should all operate at a precise level. And each technology must be able to be interdependently combined. The results of our analysis show that the difficulty of implementing the technology and contribution to the system in facial replacement technology has increased in facial feature point extraction and facial alignment technology. On the other hand, the difficulty of the facial transposition technique and the three-dimensional posture adjustment technique were low, but showed the need for development. In this paper, we propose four facial replacement models such as 2-D Faceswap, OpenPose, Deekfake, and Cycle GAN, which are suitable for the Cox platform. These models have the following features; i.e. these models include a suitable model for front face pose image conversion, face pose image with active body movement, and face movement with right and left side by 15 degrees, Generative Adversarial Network.

Facial fractures and associated injuries in high- versus low-energy trauma: all are not created equal

  • Introduction: Facial fractures (FFs) occur after high- and low-energy trauma; differences in associated injuries and outcomes have not been well articulated. Objective: To compare the epidemiology, management, and outcomes of patients suffering FFs from high-energy and low-energy mechanisms. Methods: We conducted a 6-year retrospective local trauma registry analysis of adults aged 18-55 years old that suffered a FF treated at the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. Fracture patterns, concomitant injuries, procedures, and outcomes were compared between patients that suffered a high-energy mechanism (HEM: motor vehicle crash, bicycle crash, auto versus pedestrian, falls from height > 20 feet) and those that suffered a low-energy mechanism (LEM: assault, ground-level falls) of injury. Results: FFs occurred in 123 patients, 25 from an HEM and 98 from an LEM. Rates of Le Fort (HEM 12% vs. LEM 3%, P = 0.10), mandible (HEM 20% vs. LEM 38%, P = 0.11), midface (HEM 84% vs. LEM 67%, P = 0.14), and upper face (HEM 24% vs. LEM 13%, P = 0.217) fractures did not significantly differ between the HEM and LEM groups, nor did facial operative rates (HEM 28% vs. LEM 40%, P = 0.36). FFs after an HEM event were associated with increased Injury Severity Scores (HEM 16.8 vs. LEM 7.5, P <0.001), ICU admittance (HEM 60% vs. LEM 13.3%, P <0.001), intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) (HEM 52% vs. LEM 15%, P <0.001), cervical spine fractures (HEM 12% vs. LEM 0%, P = 0.008), truncal/lower extremity injuries (HEM 60% vs. LEM 6%, P <0.001), neurosurgical procedures for the management of ICH (HEM 54% vs. LEM 36%, P = 0.003), and decreased Glasgow Coma Score on arrival (HEM 11.7 vs. LEM 14.2, P <0.001). Conclusion: FFs after HEM events were associated with severe and multifocal injuries. FFs after LEM events were associated with ICH, concussions, and cervical spine fractures. Mechanism-based screening strategies will allow for the appropriate detection and management of injuries that occur concomitant to FFs. Type of study: Retrospective cohort study. Design of a Variable-Mode Sync Generator for Implementing Digital Filters in Image Processing (이미지처리에서 디지털 필터를 구현하기 위한 가변모드 동기 발생기의 설계)

  • The use of line memory is essential for image filtering in image processing hardware. After input data is stored in line memory, filtering is performed after synchronization to use the stored data. A sync generator is used for synchronization, and in the case of a conventional sync generator, the input sync signal is delayed by one row of the input image. If a signal delayed by two rows is required, it is necessary to connect two modules. This approach increases the size of the hardware and cannot be designed efficiently. In this paper, we propose a sync generator that generates multiple types of delayed signals by adding a finite state machine. The hardware design was coded in Verilog HDL, and performance is verified by applying it to image processing hardware using field programmable gate array board.
