  • In this study we conducted component analyses of portable XRF detectors using four Au-Cu alloy standard samples to improve their accuracy by drawing up a calibration curve based on ICP-OES standard values. The portable XRF analysis found absolute errors of 0.3 to 3.7 wt% for Au and 0.2 to 8.2 wt% for Cu, confirming that the error range and standard deviation differed from one detector to another. Furthermore, the calibration curve improved their accuracy, such that the relative error rates of Au and Cu decreased from 9.8% and 14% to 3.5% and 3.7%, respectively. Accordingly, an experiment to confirm the calibration curve was conducted using unknown samples, finding that the measured values of the unknown samples fell on the calibration curve. Therefore, to accurately analyze the components of metal cultural heritage items, it is necessary to prepare a calibration curve for each element after checking whether the detector is suitable for the artifact.

  • A variety of the porcelain fused to gold(PFG) have been developed to which porcelain can be fused. PFG alloys developed for this purposed have a high melting point and do not discolor when combined with porcelain. The design of the compositions of PFG is very important to esthetic restorative materials applying to porcelain. The purpose of this study is on the change of physical and mechanical characteristics in PFG 18K alloy by the small additional elements. Principal results are as follows. The high Au alloy containing 18Karat gold contents is respectively Au(75%), Pd(10%), Pt(4%), Ag(4%), In(2%), Sn(2%), Cu(2%), Ti(1%). These alloys are composed mainly of gold, platinum, silver and palladium with a few percent of the additional elements. By the addition of small amounts of elements such as In, Sn, Ti, the fine grain castings are produced in gold alloy and the small addition of platinum is very effective in increasing of hardness and strength. These gold alloys are representative of the changes to be expected as a result of heat treatment. These changes in strength and hardness values are sufficient to demonstrate a significant difference in performance between a as-casted and a heat-treated. These alloys have mechanical properties characteristics of Type and Type gold alloys. These alloys are useful to porcelain-metal restorations and dental laboratory. Also the porcelain fused to metal(PFM) alloys containing gold are commonly use for dental purposes in dental laboratory.

  • The strategy of recovering metals from scrap is in general much different from primary sources. One of the main differences between the treatment of scrap and that of primary sources lies with the fact that metals are frequently associated with other met-als to form alloys in scrap, while metals occur in primary sources as oxides or sulfides. In this paper, factors affecting the dis-solution behavior of metals from various alloy systems have been reviewed and discussed. Specific examples have been drawn from Au/Ag, Au/cu and Ag/cu systems. Results of the dissolution behavior of various metals from these alloys have been reviewed and compared to the dissolution behavior of single metal systems in various lixiviants such as acids, cyanide and ammonia. It has been observed that the presence of other metals in alloys would significantly affect the dissolution rate of the metal in question. The leaching behavior of metals from homogeneous alloys relies on the chemical interaction between atoms in the lattice of the alloys, while that from heterogeneous alloys is affected by galvanic interaction established in the solution The manner in which the dissolution of a certain metal is influenced by surrounding metals has been discussed in terms of pas-sive and noble nature of the metal in relation to the neighboring metals. The role of the standard electrochemical Potential of these metals on the selective dissolution for a given lixiviant has also been discussed.

  • Mobile phone is a representative personal communication tool among wireless communication devices. Recently, with the miniaturization and light-weight trend of mobile phone, the vibration motor has been replaced by coin type. The required performances of coin type vibration motor needed by user are long life, higher vibration, and thin thickness. Also the most important factor determines the performance of vibration motor is long-term reliability, which is mainly related to PCB plating technique for commutator. In this study, three types of fault were categorized to analyze the cause for malfunction of vibration motor. And, hardness and surface morphology on plating surface are also investigated to optimize the plating method and plating conditions. As a result, new plating method and conditions were proposed to increase the durability of PCB commutator.

  • UBM(Under Bump Metallurgy) is very important for successful realization of Flip-Chip technology. In this study, it is investigated the interfacial reactions between various Sn-Ag solder alloys and Ni-P/Au UBM and Cu plate finish. It is also evaluated the shear strength by using the micro shear-punch test method for Sn-37Pb alloy, binary and ternary alloys of environment-friendly Pb-free solder alloys which are applied in the electronic packages. In terms of interfacial microstructure, the Pb-free solder joints have thicker IMCs than the Sn-Pb solder joints. The thickness of IMC is related to Reflow time. The IMC has been observed to grow with the increase in Reflow time. As a result of the shear test, in case of Max. shear strength, Pb-free solder showed the highest strength value and Sn-37Pb showed the lowest strength value 10 be generally condition of Reflow time.

  • This paper reviews our recent research works on the interconnection technologies in electronic packaging and assembly. At the aspect of advanced joining methods, laser-ultrasonic fluxless soldering technology was proposed. The characteristic of this technology is that the oxide film was removed through the vibration excitated by high frequency laser change in the molten solder droplet. Application researches of laser soldering technology on solder bumping of BGA packages were carried out. Furthermore, interfacial reaction between SnPb eutectic solder and Au/Ni/Cu pad during laser reflow was analyzed. At the aspect of soldered joints' reliability, the system for predicting and analyzing SMT solder joint shape and reliability(PSAR) has been designed. Optimization design method of soldered joints' structure was brought forward after the investigation of fatigue failure of RC chip devices and BGA packages under temperature cyclic conditions with FEM analysis and experimental study. At the aspect of solder alloy design, alloy design method based on quantum was proposed. The macroproperties such as melting point, wettability and strength were described by the electron parameters. In this way, a great deal of the experimental investigations was replaced, so as to realize the design and research of any kinds of solder alloys with low cost and high efficiency.

  • This study was conducted to determine the chemical composition and the mechanical properties of four commercially available low gold-based crown and bridge alloy produced in Korea. Four dental casting gold-silver-palladium alloys, i.e., A, B, C and D (code of alloys) were selected for the evaluation of chemical composition, ultimate tensile strength, elongation. values and Vickers hardness. The chemical composition of test specimens was analyzed by both emission spectrography and wet gravitation method with a 1.5gm of low gold ingot. The tensile properties and Vickers hardness was determined with cast specimens treated in following three conditions; as-cast, softening heat treatment and hardening heat treatment. The tensile testing bars were cast in accordance with the model designed by Gettleman and Harrison (1969) which was modified from the A. D. A. Specification No. 14 for dental chromium-cobalt casting alloy. Nine tensile test specimens were made from a split silicone mold for each of the test alloys to the size of 2.5mm in diameter and a gauge length of 10mm. All four alloys were handled in accordance with conventional methods used in Type III gold alloys. Ultimate tensile strength and elongation were measured on an Instron Universal Tensile Testing Machine (Model 1125, Japan) operated at a crosshead rate of 0.1cm/min. Elongation values were measured using Digital Measuring Microscope (MS-152, FUSOH, Japan). Vickers hardness was determined with a Vickers Hardness Tester (Model VKH-l, Japan) at a 1.0kg load on a mounted tensile test specimen. The following results were obtained from this study; 1. All tested alloys were composed of Au, Ag, Pd, Cu, Zn and Fe in common. The composition rate of gold for all four alloys was found in the range of $42{\sim}47$ weight % as shown below. Alloy A; Au 45%, Ag 40.2%, Pd 5.76%, others 9.04%. Alloy B; Au 47.1%, Ag 29.03%, Pd 6.98%, others 16.92%. Alloy C; Au 45%, .Ag 26.9%, Pd 6.83%, others 21.07%. Alloy D; Au 41.8%, Ag 34.4%, Pd 6.95%, others 16.85%. 3. The ultimate tensile strength of the four alloys was in the range of $31{\sim}82kg/mm^2$. The test results were shown in the below order from the highest value; As-cast condition; D, B, C, A. Softening heat treament; B, C, D, A. Hardening heat treatment; D, B, C, A. 4. The test :results of the elongation rate for each alloy were in the range of $0.5{\sim}18%$. The test results were shown in the below order from the highest value; As-cast condition; A, D, B, C. Softening heat treatment; A, C, D, B. Hardening heat treatment; C, D, B, A. 5. Vickers hardness for each of the four alloys was in the range of $120{\sim}230$. The test results were shown in the below order from the highest value; As-cast condition; C, B, D, A Softening heat treatment; D, B, C, A. Hardening heat treatment; D, A, C, B. 6. • In most gold objects crafted using the granulation technique that have been thus far discovered in the Korean Peninsula, granules were joined using a soldering alloy of gold and silver. However, it was recently revealed through SEM-EDS analysis performed on the ornamented dagger sheath from Gyerim-ro Tomb No.14 in Gyeongju that the gold granules were joined to the surface of this sheath using an entirely different technique. The gold granules on the Gyerim-ro dagger sheath are evenly sized and shaped, the surface has a dendritic texture. Dendritic textures are a characteristic feature of metal alloys, not observed in pure metals. As a matter of fact, the gold granules were made of a ternary alloy of 77wt% Au, 18wt% Ag and 4wt% Cu. Due to this component, the alloy has a melting point below 1000℃ (approximately 980℃), which is significantly lower than 1064℃, the melting temperature of pure gold. This makes it possible to join the gold granules directly to the surface of the sheath by briefly heating them to high temperature, without the use of soldering or any other media. When examined through SEM image, the surface of the sheath showed no traces of soldering, it suggests that the granules were joined through unaided fusion.

  • Increasing the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere induce high temperature and rising sea levels. So the technology that capture and reuse of the CO2 have been recently become popular. Among other methods, CRR(CO22 reduction reaction) is typical method of CO2 reusing. Electrocatalyst can show more higher efficiencies in CRR than photocatalyst because it doesn't use nature source. Nowadays, finding high efficient electrocatalyst by controlling electronic (affected by stoichiometry) and geometric (affected by atomic arrangement) factors are very important issues. Mono-atomic electro-catalyst has limitations on controlling binding energy because each intermediate has own binding energy range. So the Multi-metallic electro-catalyst is important to stabilize intermediate at the same time. Carbon monoxide(CO) which is our target product and important feedstock of useful products. Au is known for the most high CO production metal. With copper, Not only gold/copper has advantages which is they have FCC packing for easily forming solid solution regardless of stoichiometry but also presence of adsorbed CO on Cu promotes the desorption of CO on Au because of strong repulsion. And gold/copper bi-metal catalyst can show high catalytic activity(mass activity) although it has low selectivity relatively Gold. Actually, multi-metallic catalyst structure control method is limited in the solution method which is takes a lot of time. In here, we introduce CTS(carbo thermal shock) method which is using heat to make MMNP in a few seconds for making gold-copper system. This method is very simple and efficient in terms of time(very short reaction time and using carbon substrate as a direct working electrode) and increasing reaction sites(highly dispersed and mixing alloy structures). Last one is easy to control degree of mixing and it can induce 5 or more metals in one alloy system. Gold/copper by CTS can show higher catalytic activity depending on metal ratio which is altered easily by changing simple variables. The ultimate goals are making CO2 test system by CTS which can check the selectivity depending on metal types in a very short time.
