  • This paper presents a 5-bit digital step attenuator (DSA) using a commercial 0.18-${\mu}m$ silicon-on-insulator (SOI) process for the wideband phased array antenna. Both low insertion loss and low root mean square (RMS) phase error and amplitude error are achieved employing two attenuation topologies of the switched path attenuator and the switched T-type attenuator. The attenuation coverage of 31 dB with a least significant bit of 1 dB is achieved at DC to 20 GHz. The RMS phase error and amplitude error are less than $2.5^{\circ}$ and less than 0.5 dB, respectively. The measured insertion loss of the reference state is less than 5.5 dB at 10 GHz. The input return loss and output return loss are each less than 12 dB at DC to 20 GHz. The current consumption is nearly zero with a voltage supply of 1.8 V. The chip size is $0.93mm{\times}0.68mm$, including pads. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a low phase error DC-to-20-GHz SOI DSA.

  • A polymer-based planar-lightwave-circuit-type variable optical attenuator (VOA) was fabricated using a hot embossing process. With an optimized one-step embossing process, forty micro-channels for the guidance of light were defined on a polymer thin film with an accuracy of ${\pm}0.5{\mu}m$. The fabricated polymeric thermo-optic VOA shows 30 dB attenuation with 110 mW electrical input power at $1.55{\mu}m$. The rise and fall times are less than 5 ms.

  • The hydraulic pressure pulsation has on the effected on the acoustic nosie and control performance of the hydraulic-servo system. The Helmholtz attenuator introduction on the hydraulic line is an efficient device to reduce the hydraulic pulsation. The salient feature of causing hydraulic pulsation and the frequency characteristics of Helmholtz attenuator are studied. The hydraulic filter design parameters such as the locating position, connecting orifice area and accumulator volume are mathematically analyzed. The instrumental works are carried out with the remarkable reduction of the hydraulic pressure pulsation magnitude and the acoustic noise level.

  • Variable optical attenuators (VOA) made of low-loss fluorinated polymers are demonstrated which shows a low operating power less than 30 mW due to the superior thermo-optic effect of polymer material and a low insertion loss less than 1.0 dB by incorporating highly fluorinated polymers to reduce the absorption loss at 1550 nm. An attenuator-integrated low-crosstalk polymeric digital optical switch (DOS) is also demonstrated. The switch and attenuator shares a single connected electrode which is controlled by a single current source. Due to the simple structure of the integrated attenuator, the device length is reduced to 1 cm so as to provide low insertion loss of 0.8 and 1.1 dB for 1300 and 1550 nm, respectively. The attenuator radiates remained optical signal on the switch-off branch in order to decrease the switching crosstalk to be less than -70 dB with an applied electrical power of 200 mW.

  • The variable optical attenuator based on side polished fiber technique was experimentally demonstrated. Various combination mixtures of poly(vinylidene fluoride) and poly(methyl methacrylate) have been used as the overlay waveguide materials for the variable optical attenuator application. A controllable amount of optical power can be extracted via evanescent coupling by changing the temperature of the polymer mixture, thereby changing its refractive index. The VOA under test provides a maximum attenuation of 30 ㏈ and an insertion loss of 0.1 ㏈.

  • Resister networks are used widely in many, high frequency applications for attenuators. In this paper we studied the frequency characteristics of attenuator using network analyzer and compared Ni-Cr thin film resistor with thick film resistor attenuator. Also from return loss, insertion loss and VSWR we obtained the maximum available frequency of these attenuators.

  • To realize the tap coefficient of a finite impulse response(FIR) filter or the twiddle factor of a fast Fourier transform(FFT) using a current-mode analog circuit, a high accurate current-attenuator circuit is needed This paper introduces an accuracy enhancement technique in the current-mode signal processing. First of all, the DC of set-current error in a conventional current-attenuator using a gate-ratioed orient mirror circuit is analyzed and then, the current-attenuator circuit with a negligibly small DC offset-current error is introduced. The circuit consists of N-output current mirrors connected in parallel with me another. The output current of the circuit is attenuated to 1/N of the input current. On the basis of the Kirchhoff current law, the current scale ratio is determined simply by the number of the current mirrors in the N-current mirrors connected in parallel. In the proposed current-attenuator circuit the scale accuracy is limited by the ac gain error of the current mirror. Considering that a current mirror has a negligibly small ac gain error, the attainable maximum scale accuracy is theoretically -80[dB] to the input current.

  • A voltage controlled attenuator using a PIN diode and two resistors of the $\pi$-type fixed attenuator is described in this paper. The proposed variable attenuator operating for a fixed attenuation range has a good input VSWR and a low intermodulation signal. For the low phase shift, a PIN diode is connected with open stub for the purpose of phase compensation. The stub for phase compensation is calculated by the Deloach method and the related circuit theory. This attenuator is easily fabricated on the microstrip and can be normally used in fine control circuits within small attenuation range. The fabricated attenuator for 2110~2170 MHz frequency band has about 4 dB of an attenuation range, $2^{\circ}$ of phase variance, and -20 dB of S11 according to the input voltage from 0 to 2.7 V.

  • Purpose : To evaluate the usefulness of acoustic noise attenuator on auditory fMRI examination. Materials and methods : The acoustic noise attenuator consists of mask, earmuff and silicon earplug. The soft polyurethane sheet and polyurethane form , which has a good soundproof characteristic were used for mask and earmuff. Auditory fMRI experiments of 500 Hz pure tone stimulation were performed in three different cases; first all of mask, earmuff and earplug, secondly earmuff and earplug only and finally without attenuator in 4 normal hearing volunteers. For data acquisition, BOLD MR imaging technique was employed at a 1.5T MR scanner equipped with high performance gradient system. The raw data were analyzed using a SPM-99 analysis software and the activation maps were obtained. Results : In case of all items of acoustic attenuator used, the results revealed that activation was focused on primary auditory area. When only earmuff and earplug were used, the results showed that the activation spread over primary auditory and secondary associative areas. Last, when no device used, only weak activation was observed on the right auditory cortex. Conclusion : It is expected that the acoustic noise attenuator, which consists of earplugs, earmuffs and mask, is a very useful device in auditory fMRI study.
