  • The objective of the present research is to evaluate the wave propagation velocity and attenuation characteristics of kaolin clay specimens using ultrasonic testing. Test specimens with known initial micro-fabric were prepared using a two-stage slurry consolidation technique. For a known state of stress conditions, initial void ratio, and micro-fabric, a series of experiments were conducted to evaluate the longitudinal wave propagation velocity and associated damping behavior. The effects of major variables involved in ultrasonic testing of cohesive soil were considered in this study. Ultrasonic velocity was not correlated to the microfabric structure under the given consolidated pressure whereas ultrasonic attenuation was affected by the microstructural properties of the specimen.

  • The paper presents a theoretical analysis on the propagation characteristics of the high-frequency wave in an elastic waveguide whose diameter is less than or similar to the wavelength. The theoretical results were verified by comparing them with the numerical results obtained by the boundary-element method. The ratio of the waveguide diameter to the wavelength affects the number of the existing wavenumber, and thus it affects the propagation characteristics. In the media with attenuation, the trend is similar to that in the media without attenuation except the decreasing amplitude.

  • In order to know the characteristics of attenuation of coda wave in the Kyungsang Sedimentary Basin quality factor for coda wave or coda Q is estimated from the earthquake data recorded in the KIGAM microearthquake network. The single scattering model for coda wave generation is adopted in estimating coda Q. Coda Q appears to be largely dependent on the normalized time(a) which is the ratio of elapsed time to S-wave travel time. In the present study coda Q(Qc) is estimated in the range of a=1.5-3.Q and expressed in terms of frequency(f). The deduced function in the range of 1 to 25 Hz is Qc=36.8283 f1.15095 to represent the strong dependence of coda Q on frequency. It is found that the difference of Qc between U-D N-S and E-W components is negligible, This face supports the back-scattering theory that coda were originates from scattered waves by randomly distributed heterogeneities in the crust. On the other hand it is observed that the coda Q increases with depth.

  • In this paper, guided circumferential wave propagating in an orthotropic viscoelastic cylindrical curved plate subjected to traction-free conditions is investigated in the frame of the Kelvin-Voight viscoelastic theory. The obtained three wave equations are decoupled into two groups, Lamb-like wave and SH wave. They are separately solved by the Legendre polynomial series approach. The availability of the method is confirmed through the comparison with the published data of the SH wave for a viscoelastic flat plate. The dispersion curves and attenuation curves for the carbon fiber and prepreg cylindrical plates are illustrated and the viscous effect on dispersion curves is shown. The influences of the ratio of radius to thickness are analyzed.

  • We report the effect of the film thickness on electrical properties of Ti(N) film resistors. The applications of titanium nitride thin film resistor in $\Pi$-type attenuators are also characterized. As film thickness decreases from 100 to 30 nm, temperature coefficient of resistance significantly decreases from -60 to -148 ppm/K, while sheet resistance increases from 37 to $270\;{\Omega}/{\square}$. The characterizations of 20dB-attenuators using thin film resistors are improved in comparison with those using thick film resistors. The $\Pi$-type attenuators using Ti(N) thin film resistors exhibit a attenuation of -19.94 dB and voltage standing wave ratio of 1.16 at a frequency of 2.7 GHz.

  • This study carried out the laboratory tests for AE signal attenuation to determine the attenuation coefficient (α) of silo concrete in Gyeongju low and intermediate-level disposal environments. The concrete samples were prepared by satisfying the concrete mixing ratio used in the Gyeongju disposal silo, and these samples were additionally exposed depending on the temperature conditions and saturation and, dry condition. As a result of attenuation tests according to the transmission distance on three concrete specimens for each disposal condition, the AE amplitude and absolute energy measured on the saturated concrete were higher than that of the dry concrete in the initial range of the signal transmission distance, but the α of the saturated concrete was higher than that of the dry concrete. Regardless of the saturation and dry conditions, the α tended to decrease as the temperature increases. The α had a more major influence on the saturation and dry condition than the temperature condition, which means that the saturation and dry condition is the main consideration in measuring the signal attenuation of a concrete disposal structure. The α of concrete in the disposal environment expect to be used to predict the integrity of silos concrete in Gyeongju low and intermediate-level disposal environments by estimating the actual AE parameter values at the location of cracks and to determine the optimum location of sensors.

  • Compressed Sensing(CS) is the theory that can recover signals which are sampled below the Nyquist sampling rate to original analog signals. In this paper, we propose the estimation algorithm of ultrasonic attenuation coefficients in the frequency domain using CS. While most estimation algorithms transform the time-domain signals into the frequency-domain using the Fourier transform, the proposed method directly utilize the spectral information in the recovery process by the basis matrix without the completely recovered signals in the time domain. We apply three transform bases for sparsifying and estimate the attenuation coefficients using the Centroid Downshift method with Dual-reference diffraction compensation technique. The estimation accuracy and execution time are compared for each basis matrix. Computer simulation results show that the DCT basis matrix exhibits less than 0.35% estimation error for the compressive ratio of 50% and about 6% average error for the compressive ratio of 70%. The proposed method which directly extracts frequency information from the CS signals can be extended to estimating for other ultrasonic parameters in the Quantitative Ultrasound (QUS) Analysis.

  • This paper suggests an efficient method of protection ratio calculation and shows some calculated results applicable to frequency coordination in microwave relay system networks, and the net filter discrimination (NFD) associated with Tx spectrum mask and overall Rx filter characteristics has been examined to obtain the adjacent channel protection ratio. The protection ratio comprises several factors such as C/N of modulation scheme, noise-to-interference ratio, multiple interference allowance, fade margins of multi-path and rain attenuation, and NFD. According to computed results for 6.7 GHz, 64-QAM, and 60 km at BER $10^{-6}$, fade margin and co-channel protection ratio are 41.1 and 75.2 dB, respectively, In addition, NFD for channel bandwidth of 40 MHz reveals 28.9 dB at the first adjacent channel, which results in adjacent channel protection ratio of 46.3 dB. The proposed method provides some merits of an easy calculation, systematic extension, and applying the same concept to frequency coordination in millimeter wave relay system networks.

  • The flow characteristics in micro shock tube are investigated experimentally. Studies were carried out using a stainless steel micro shock tube. Shock and expansion wave was measured using 8 pressure sensors. The initial pressure ratio was varied from 4.3 to 30.5, and the diameter of tube was also changed from 3mm to 6mm. Diaphragm conditions were varied using two types of diaphragms. The results obtained show that the shock strength in the tube becomes stronger for an increase in the initial pressure ratio and diameter of tube. For the thinner diaphragm, the highest shock strength was found among varied diaphragm condition. Shock attenuation was highly influenced by the diameter of tube.

  • In this paper, effects of soft handoff region on the reverse link capacity of a DS-CDMA cellular system are investigated. The reverse link capacity of a CDMA cellular system is calculated at a given soft handoff region ratio (SHRR) and path loss model. The results show that the reverse link capacity increases by 1 ∼ 4 channels according to the soft handoff region ratio and the path loss model. However, in the case of the path loss model having a large attenuation exponent ($\mu$ = 5) and a small shadowing standard deviation ( $\sigma$ = 6 dB), the reverse link capacity is no more increased by increasing SHRR.
