  • LCL filters are widely used in three-phase PWM converter for its advantages of small volume, low cost and inhibition of high frequency current harmonic. However, it is difficult to optimize its design because its parameters are mutually influenced while the value of each parameter for LCL filter has impacts on the converter's cost and size. In this paper, the target of optimization is to minimize the parameter values of LCL filter, and an optimization method for parameters of LCL filter of three-phase PWM converter based on least square method is proposed. With this method, a quantitative calculation of the harmonic component of the converter’s side phase voltage is performed first, and then the quantitative relationship between phase voltage harmonics and grid phase current harmonics is analyzed. After that, the attenuation requirement of each harmonic is obtained by taking into account the requirements for each harmonic component of grid current. Then according to the optimization objective, the objective function with minimum harmonic attenuation deviation is established, and least squares method is adopted for three-dimensional global searching of parameters for LCL filter. Thus, the designed harmonic attenuation curve approximates the minimum attenuation requirements, and the optimized LCL filter parameters are obtained. Finally, the effectiveness of the method is verified by the experiments.

  • Objective: We aimed to evaluate correlations between computed tomography (CT) parameters and pulmonary function test (PFT) parameters according to disease severity in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and to determine whether CT parameters can be used to predict PFT indices. Materials and Methods: A total of 370 patients with COPD were grouped based on disease severity according to the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) I-IV criteria. Emphysema index (EI), air-trapping index, and airway parameters such as the square root of wall area of a hypothetical airway with an internal perimeter of 10 mm (Pi10) were measured using automatic segmentation software. Clinical characteristics including PFT results and quantitative CT parameters according to GOLD criteria were compared using ANOVA. The correlations between CT parameters and PFT indices, including the ratio of forced expiratory volume in one second to forced vital capacity (FEV1/FVC) and FEV1, were assessed. To evaluate whether CT parameters can be used to predict PFT indices, multiple linear regression analyses were performed for all patients, Group 1 (GOLD I and II), and Group 2 (GOLD III and IV). Results: Pulmonary function deteriorated with increase in disease severity according to the GOLD criteria (p < 0.001). Parenchymal attenuation parameters were significantly worse in patients with higher GOLD stages (P < 0.001), and Pi10 was highest for patients with GOLD III (4.41 ± 0.94 mm). Airway parameters were nonlinearly correlated with PFT results, and Pi10 demonstrated mild correlation with FEV1/FVC in patients with GOLD II and III (r = 0.16, p = 0.06 and r = 0.21, p = 0.04, respectively). Parenchymal attenuation parameters, airway parameters, EI, and Pi10 were identified as predictors of FEV1/FVC for the entire study sample and for Group 1 (R2 = 0.38 and 0.22, respectively; p < 0.001). However, only parenchymal attenuation parameter, EI, was identified as a predictor of FEV1/FVC for Group 2 (R2 = 0.37, p < 0.001). Similar results were obtained for FEV1. Conclusion: Airway and parenchymal attenuation parameters are independent predictors of pulmonary function in patients with mild COPD, whereas parenchymal attenuation parameters are dominant independent predictors of pulmonary function in patients with severe COPD.

  • In this paper a new adaptive, decentralized excitation control scheme proposed to enhance the transient stability of multimachine power systems is extensively analyzed with respect to its robustness and disturbance attenuation. As shown in the paper, both robustness and disturbance attenuation can be effectively improved by suitably selecting the design parameters of the proposed controller. Particularly, some simple rules for the selection of the control gains and the adaptation parameters are extracted which, as it is proven, may be essential for the system performance. Simulation tests on a two generator infinite bus power system absolutely confirm the theoretical results.

  • Soils are porous materials with high shielding capability to attenuate gamma and X-rays. The disposal of radionuclides throughout the soil profile can expose the living organisms to ionizing radiation. Thus, studies aiming to analyze the shielding properties of the soils are of particular interest for radiation shielding. Investigations on evaluating the shielding capabilities of highly weathered soils are still scarce, meaning that additional research is necessary to check their efficiency to attenuate radiation. In this study, the radiation shielding properties of contrasting soils were evaluated. The radiation interaction parameters assessed were attenuation coefficients, mean free path, and half- and tenth-value layers. At low photon energies, the photoelectric absorption contribution to the attenuation coefficient predominated, while at intermediate and high photon energies, the incoherent scattering and pair production were the dominant effects. Soils with the highest densities presented the best shielding properties, regardless of their chemical compositions. Increases in the attenuation coefficient and decreases in shielding parameters of the soils were associated with increases in clay, Fe2O3, Al2O3, and TiO2 amounts. In addition, this paper provides a comprehensive description of the shielding properties of weathered soils showing the importance of their granulometric fractions and oxides to the attenuation of the radiation.

  • Signal Attenuation in the design of satellite channel is due mostly to rain. In this paper, the rain rate characteristics based on the recent year(1994-1996) data for Changwon-Masan were approximated to Moupfouma distribution, and the parameters of distribution were calculated from a simple conversion method of 1-h rate to 1-min rain rate data. From rain rate characteristics, the rain attenuation was estimated and compared with CCR model, Global model and SAM model.

  • The objective of the study is to develop attenuation equations of groud motions in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula. The earthquake source characteristics and the medium properties were estimated from available instrumental earthquake records and used as input parameters. The peak ground accelerations (PGA) and pseudo-velocty response spectra(PSV) were simulated by the random vibration theory. The attenuation equations for the PGA were constructed in terms of local magnitudes and hypocentral distances.

  • A digital spectrum analysis technique was used to estimate the tissue characteristic parameters (transmission velocity and attenuation coefficient) in the phantom study and the human liver's ultrasound scanning. The soft tissue equivalent phantom was made with the combination materials of agar, water, powdered graphite, and n-propyl alcohol. In the human study, twenty five normal subjects and three patients with liver diseases were studied using the ultrasonic reflection signals and the spectrum analysis method The following results were obtained; 1. The soft tissue-equivalent materical could be produced with various acoustic parameters by changing the composition amount of the powdered graphite and n-propyl alcohol. 2. Attenuation coefficients of normal human liver tissue were estimated to be 0. 36 dB/cm MHz$\pm$0.11. In patients with liver disese, tile attenuation coefficients were shown to be different from the above normal values.

  • Typical negative group delay circuits (NGDC) are analyzed in terms of signal attenuation, group delay, and bandwidth using S-parameters. By inverting these formulations, we derive and present the design equations (for NGD circuit elements) for a desired specification of the two among the three parameters. The proposed design method is validated through simulation examples for narrow- and wide-band pulse inputs in the time and frequency domains. Moreover, an NGDC composed of lumped elements is fabricated at 1 GHz for measurement. As a function of frequency, the circuit-/EM-simulated and measured group delays are in good agreement. The provided simple NGDC design equations may be useful for many applications that require compensations of some signal delays.

  • The paper studies the attenuation of the axisymmetric longitudinal waves propagating in the bi-layered hollow cylinder made of linear viscoelastic materials. Investigations are made by utilizing the exact equations of motion of the theory of viscoelasticity. The dispersion equation is obtained for an arbitrary type of hereditary operator of the materials of the constituents and a solution algorithm is developed for obtaining numerical results on the attenuation of the waves under consideration. Specific numerical results are presented and discussed for the case where the viscoelasticity of the materials is described through fractional-exponential operators by Rabotnov. In particular, how the rheological parameters influence the attenuation of the axisymmetric longitudinal waves propagating in the cylinder under consideration, is established.

  • The mass attenuation coefficients (${\mu}/{\rho}$) of food waste samples (pomegranate peel, acorn cap, lemon peel, mandarin peel, pumpkin peel, grape peel, orange peel, pineapple peel, acorn peel and grape stalk) have been measured employing a Si(Li) detector at 13.92, 17.75, 20.78, 26.34 and 59.54 keV. Also, the theoretical values of the mass attenuation coefficients have been evaluated utilizing mixture rule from WinXCOM program. The results showed that the lemon peel has the highest values of ${\mu}/{\rho}$ among the selected samples. From the obtained mass attenuation coefficients, we determined some absorption parameters such as effective atomic number ($Z_{eff}$), electron density ($N_E$) and molar extinction coefficient (${\varepsilon}$). It was found that the $Z_{eff}$ values of all food wastes lie within the range of 4.034-7.595, whereas the $N_E$ of the studied food wastes was found to be in the range of $0.301-1.720{\times}10^{25}$ (electrons/g) for present energy region.
