  • The pressure-swirl atomizer is widely used for the injectors in liquid rocket engines thanks to its high performance atomization and broad stability margin range. Spray mixed-interaction is an important area of study especially in cases where the propellant is mixed by spray interaction after an oxidant and a fuel are discharged separately. This interaction of sprays results in a significant modification of the spray characteristics such as the spatial evolution of the sprays. Experiments are conducted by a photographic technique to quantify the merged angle of the interaction regions of sprays from two pressure-swirl injectors. The experimental results show that the merged angle is mainly determined by the momentum flux ratios between two swirled sprays.

  • Spray drying is a unique drying process for powder production. Spray dried product must be free-flowing in order to fill the pressing dies rapidly, especially in the ceramic production. The important powder characteristics are; the particle size distribu-tion and moisture content of the finished product that can be estimated and adjusted by the spray dryer operation, within limits, through regulation of atomizer and drying conditions. In order to estimate the moisture content of the resultant dried product, we modeled the control system of the drying process using two different Artificial Neural Network (ANN) approaches, namely the Back-Propagation Multiplayer Perceptron (BPMLP) algorithm and the Radial Basis Function (RBF) network. It was found out that the performance of both of the artificial neural network models were quite significant and the total testing error for the 100 data was 0.8 and 0.7 for the BPMLP algorithm and the RBF network respectively.

  • The negative pressure as much as 10's mmHg is demanded at nozzle inside, in case of atomizing the large density molten materials. by conventional air jet nozzle. In this study, suction type fluid nozzle is designed by applying the ejector principle in order to clarify the air flow of nozzle inside, mechanism of liquid suction and liquid film formation. The results of this experimental study areas follows. Suction force of liquid is magnified by using liquid nozzle, and it is able to supply the liquid stable. Negative pressure at nozzle inside is varied by throttle angle of liquid nozzle, position and outer diameter of air jet nozzle, and have a influence on liquid suction quantity and liquid film formation.

  • Although Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) in air has been applied to a wider range of aftertreatment processes for HAPs(Hazardous Air Pollutants), due to its high electron density and energy, its potential use as precharging dust particles is not well known. In this work, we measured size distributions of bimodal aerosol particles and estimated collection efficiency of the particles by electrostatic precipitator(ESP) using DBD as particle charger. To examine the particle collection with DBD charger, nano size particles of NaCl($20{\sim}100$ nm) and DOS($50{\sim}800$ nm) were generated by tube furnace and atomizer, respectively. For experimental conditions of 60 Hz, 11 kV, and 60 lpm, the particle collection efficiency for the hybrid system comprising DBD charger and ESP was over 85 %, based on the number of particles captured.

  • This study describes the external spray characteristics of deflector nozzle such as the breakup procedures of liquid sheet, spray angle, discharge coefficient and bubble behaviors of spray and SMD at deflector nozzle. In order to visualize the spray behaviors shadow graphy technique were used. According to the increase of injection pressure, development of the spray passes through the dribbling, distoted jet, closed bubble due to the contraction by surface tension forces, the bubble opens into hollow tulip shape, and the curved surface straightened to form a conical sheet like as the simplex swirl atomizer. Spray cone angle was nearly 90 deg. Variations of SMD were examined in order to describe the dependency of SMD on the injection pressure and orifice diameter. The shape of deflector and oriffice diameter had an effect on the discharge coefficient.

  • An experimental study was carried out with an aerated nozzle. This nozzle was well known that the performance of the atomization is better than other ones even though the supplied air pressure is lower than that of them. The purpose of this investigation is to provide the essential information of the aerated nozzle from the nozzle exit. The experimental work was performed in order to analyze the characteristics of the overall flow field from the nozzle exit. The 2-D PDPA system was used to acquire the data in the concerned region. The characteristics of the mean velocity distribution, half-width, and SMD were mainly analyzed. Also the correlation between turbulent kinetic energy and SMD was described with ALR.

  • An experimental study was performed to explore the drop formation and atomization characteristics in electrohydrodynarnic atomization with flow rate, power supply, voltage frequency, and nozzle size. A basic electrohydrodynarnic atomizer equipment was developed for the analysis of spray visualization and tested for the exploration of relationship between several experimental parameters. In results, the varicose wave had been taken place and the small droplets had been generated less than outer diameter of nozzle on the conditions of 25G of nozzle, flow rate of 2 mL/min, and applied frequency of 50kV at AC power over 5kV voltage. The whipping motion had been grown at applied frequency of 400kV and AC power around 2kV voltage

  • In this study, we developed nonvolatile residue (NVR) real-time monitoring system to measure the nonvolatile residue particle in ultra pure water (UPW). This device has a capability of measuring 4 different channels, i.e., 10 nm, 30 nm, 50 nm, and 100 nm. Until now, the light scattering method to detect RAE(residue after evaporation) was the only choice. However, this method can detect RAE larger than ca. 50 nm. In ultra pure water, RAE particles are usually very small and hard to detect with conventional laser scattering devices. To detect very small RAEs, a new system is developed and tested. The system consists of an atomizer that generates RAE particles and a four channel condensation particle counter (CPC). During the several months' operation in manufacturing line, the system was successfully tested and showed reliable results.

  • Diesel autothermal reforming has several problems such as carbon deposition in reforming reactor, sulfur poisoning of catalyst, difficulty of aromatics decomposition and mixing problems of reactants(diesel, steam, oxygen). Severe carbon deposition causes the rapid performance degradation of reformer. Carbon deposition is formed from ethylene, carbon precursor. Ethylene was generated at the homogeneous reaction zone of the reactor entrance. This phenomenon is closely linked to the mixing of reactants. In this investigation, we try to minimize the ethylene generation at the reactor entrance atomization technique.

  • The experimental measurements were carried out to examine turbulent disintegration characteristics ejecting from a counter-flowing internal mixing pneumatic nozzle under variable conditions of swirl angles and air pressures. The air injection pressure was varied from 60 kPa to 180 kPa and four counter-flowing internal mixing nozzles with axi-symmetric tangential-drilled holes at swirl angle of 15$^{\circ}$, 30$^{\circ}$, 45$^{\circ}$, and 60$^{\circ}$to the central axis have been specially designed. The experimental results were quantitatively analyzed, focusing mainly on the comparison of turbulent atomization characteristics issuing from an internal mixing swirl nozzle. To illustrate the swirl phenomena, the distributions of mean velocities, turbulence intensities, volume flux, and SMD (Sauter Mean Diameter, or D$\sub$32/) were comparatively analyzed.
