  • This study evaluated the effects of $\gamma$-irradiation on immunomodulating properties and structural changes of ${\beta}$-glucan. ${\beta}$-Glucan solutions (10 mg/mL) were ${\gamma}$-irradiated at 10, 30, and 50 kGy. Splenocyte proliferation and cytokine (interferon-${\gamma}$ and interlukin-2) productions by ${\gamma}$-irradiated ${\beta}$-glucan were evaluated in in vivo and in vitro, and structural changes of ${\beta}$-glucan were also determined after ${\gamma}$-irradiation. ${\gamma}$-Irradiation on ${\beta}$-glucan at 50 kGy enhanced splenocyte proliferation and cytokine productions, (p<0.05) and cleft glycosidic bonds of ${\beta}$-glucan resulting in lower the molecular weight. These results indicate that the use of ${\gamma}$-irradiation on ${\beta}$-glucan may be useful for improving its immunological activity by lowering the molecular weight of ${\beta}$-glucan.

  • Radiation technique has been used to develope mutant rice. Suwon 345 rice seeds were irradiated with 250 Gy gamma ray. Morphological characteristics of the variants in M$_{8}$ generation were observed and random amplified polymorphic DNA(RAPD) analysis was carried out. Plant height, panicle length, 1,000 grain weight and lodging were very different in mutants compared with donor cultivar. RAPD analysis showed that polymorphic bands were presented in several primers of the mutants. In comparison with original variety, variants were classified into four group through UPGMA analysis. A group has mutation trait in panicle length, B group in plant height and C group in 1,000 grain weight. Among mutants, no. 46 and 147 was ranked as salt tolerance and the malonaldehyde content of these mutants was more increased than that of original variety. Valuable mutants obtained will be useful for developing new cultivars and for studing gene function in molecular level.l.

  • This study was designed to evaluate the effect of Yukwa prepared by addition of green tea powder on change of lipid composition and body weight in mouse model. Mice were fed with Yukwa containing the five different types of green tea powders such as Bucho-cha, Okro-cha, Yongjeong-cha, Oolong-cha and Hong-cha with a normal diet. Body weight changes of Yukwa fed mice were measured once in a week for seven weeks. After seven weeks, mice were sacrificed and serum and tissues were collected for the following: adipose tissue weight, liver morphology, adipose tissue size and cholesterol content. The Yukwa combination with green tea fed mice reduced all the parameters compared to Yukwa alone fed mice. In conclusion combination with green tea showed reducing effect of hypocholesterolemia, which suggests the possibility of application to green tea as a food ingredient.

  • As part of a fundamental study on the volume reduction of contaminated concrete wastes, the separation characteristics of the aggregates and the distribution of the radioactivity in the aggregates were investigated. Radioisotope $^{60}Co$ was artificially used as a model contaminant for non-radioactive crushed concrete waste. Volume reduction for radioactively contaminated dismantled concrete wastes was carried out using activated heavy weight concrete taken from the Korea Research Reactor 2 (KRR-2) and light weight concrete from the Uranium Conversion Plant (UCP). The results showed that most of the $^{60}Co$ nuclide was easily separated from the contaminated dismantled concrete waste and was concentrated mainly in the porous fine cement paste. The heating temperature was found to be one of the effective parameters in the removal of the radionuclide from concrete waste. The volume reduction rate achieved was above 80% for the KRR-2 concrete wastes and above 75% for the UCP concrete wastes by thermal and mechanical treatment.

  • Assessment of structural behaviour of corrosion affected structures is an important issue, which would help in making certain decisions pertaining to the inspection, repair, strengthening, replacement and demolition of such structures. The paper presents formulations to predict the loss of weight and the loss of cross-sectional area of the reinforcing bar undergoing corrosion based on the earlier study carried out by the present authors (Bhargava et al. 2006). These formulations have further been used to analytically evaluate the ultimate bending moment and ultimate shear force capacity of the corroded concrete beams. Results of the present study indicate that, a considerably good agreement has been observed between the experimental and the analytically predicted values for the weight loss and reduction in radius of the corroded reinforcing bars. A considerably good agreement has also been observed between the experimental and the analytically predicted values of ultimate bending moment and ultimate shear force capacity for the corroded concrete beams.

  • As the third-year experiment on the wholesomeness of irradiated rice with 50 and 100 krad gamma-rays, a feeding test was undertaken with mice of $F_2-generation$ which were used in the preceding year. No significant difference was observed between the irradiated group and control group with respect to gain of body weight, reproductive ratio, mortality and average body weight of weaning mice.

  • As the plants are classified as a bulk facility by the Agency's safeguards criteria, the Material Balance Evaluation is a good tool to timely detect diversion that will be accomplished through the creation of defects as small as bias defects. Through all evaluations made by the Agency, it Is strongly recommended to report SRD based on both weight and enrichment, maintain the reliable MUF declaration and improve the gamma spectrometry measurement procedure. These recommendations have been now applied and are going on.

  • This paper presents a force control of a arm of walking training robot. The current gait training apparatus in hospital are ineffective for the difficulty in keeping constant unloading level and constraining patients to walk freely. The proposed walking training robot is designed to unload body weight effectively during walking. The walking training robot consists of unloading manipulator and mobile platform. The manipulator driven with a electro-mechanical linear mechanism unloads body weight in various level. The mobile platform is wheel type, which allows to patients unconstrained walking. Unloading system with electro-mechanical linear mechanism has been developed, which has advantages such as low noise level, light weight, low manufacturing cost and low power consumption. A system model for the manipulator ...

  • The normal shutdown and maintenance period of a nuclear power plant can be remarkably shortened when the examination and maintenance works in steam generator tubes are simultaneously carried out with refueling job. There are nozzle dams to Hock the coolant How from reactor to steam generator. Workers are reluctant to install nozzle dam because of the high radiation exposure and the limited working space in steam generator. Moreover, the heavy weight of present nozzle dam makes it installation and removal works much difficult. In this paper, a lighter KAERI nozzle dam with increased flexural rigidity-to-weight was designed and manufactured by changing the structure design of the present nozzle dam and by selecting new material, carbon fiber-reinforced plastic.
