An Acid Deposition engineering Model (공학적 산침적 모델에 관한 연구)

  • An acid deposition Engineering Model was developed by parameterizing the role of organics in the photochemistry and by simplifying liquid phase processes. This Engineering Model concept was implemented onto the Sulfur Transport Eulerian Model II(STEM II). The Engineering Model version of the STEM(STEM-ENG) saves the CPU time over 50 times and produces the upper and lower limit values prodicted by the original STEM II. These limits obtained by the STEM-ENG can be used to estimate the importance of organics in acid and O3 production. The STEM-ENG with 30,000 grid points can be run on any recent PCs to give a quick assessment of air quality.

Release of Airborne Mercury from Major Waste Incineration Systems in Korea (국내 주요 쓰레기 소각시설로부터 발생하는 수은의 대기 배출량에 관한 연구)

  • The encironmental consequences of airborne mercury (Hg) release from waste incineration system are wellperceived. To provide some insights into those phenomena, we have assessed annual emission rates of Hg for several major incineration systems in Korea following the procedures developed abroad. The results of our computation, derived on the basis of dividing the whole amounts of annually incinerated wastes into municipal solid Wastes (MSW), and medical solid wastes (MDW), indicate that the extent of Hg release may be significant nationwide, possibly approaching a few tonnes of Hg per year basis. Knowing that the airborne transport and the resulting deposition of Hg can exert serious pollutions to the aquatic ecosystems, of particular fisheries, we are obliged to establish a stringent measure to confine the amount of Hg released via incineration.

Analytic Model for Concentration Deficit Profile Caused by a Large Vegetated Area (녹지의 대기정화효과 분석을 위한 해석적 대기확산모델의 유도)

  • A simple analytic model is proposed here to analyze the concentration deficit field caused by a large area of vegetated area. With non-dimensional deposition velocity chosen as small parameter, the regular perturbation method is exploited to derive the mass balance equation and the dynamic equations for the concentration deficit field, Analytic solutions to those equations are obtained in a closed form for several cases of interest, assuming that the concentration field is stationary and the plume can be nicely approximated as Gaussian for a point source. The results suggest that quite a negligible fraction (less than 1%) of the gaseous air pollutants emitted into the air is removed by the vegetated area of which width is 4 km in wind-wise direction, the typical dimension of the Restricted Development Zones around the metropolitan regions in South Korea.

Characteristics of Material Damage Caused by Acid Deposition in East Asia

  • Material exposure experiments were performed to evaluate the relationship between air pollution and material corrosion rates based on collaboration with researchers in China, Japan, and Korea. Qualitative and quantitative atmospheric corrosion was estimated from damage caused to bronze, copper, steel, marble, cedar, cypress, and lacquer plates exposed to outdoor and indoor conditions in certain East Asian cities. The effects of atmospheric and meteorological factors on the damage to the copper plates and marble pieces were estimated using a regression analysis. The results indicated that sulfur dioxide produced the most destruction of the materials, especially in South Korea and China. In Japan, the copper plates were damaged as a result of natural conditions and sea salt. Copper was also found to be damaged by the surface deposition of sulfur and chlorine. Meanwhile, marble was substantially degraded by gaseous sulfur dioxide, yet sulfate ions in rain had no effect. Accordingly, the analysis of air pollution from the perspective of material damage was determined to be very useful in evaluating and substantiating the intensity of air pollution in East Asia.

Epitaxy of Self-assembled InAs Quantum Dots on Si Substrates by Atmospheric Pressure Metalorganic Chemical Vapor Deposition (대기압 MOCVD 시스템을 이용하여 Si 기판 위에 자발적으로 형성된 InAs 양자점에 대한 연구)

  • Fully coherent self-assembled InAs quantum dots(QDs) grown on Si (100) substrates by atmospheric pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition(APMOCVD) were grown and the effect of growth conditions such as growth rate and growth time on quantum dots' morphology such as densities and sizes was investigated. InAs QDs of 30 - 80 nm in diameters with densities in the range of (0.6 - 1.7) x $10^{10}\;cm^{-2}$ were achieved on Si substrates and InAs layer was changed from 2 dimensional growth to 3 dimensional one at a nominal thickness less than 0.48 ML. This is attributed to the higher ambient pressure of APMOCVD suppressing of In segregation from the 2 dimensional InAs layer. This In segregation looked to disturb the dot formation especially when the growth rate was low so that the dots became less dense and bigger as the growth rate was lower.

  • In this study, the two dimensional morphology of particle accumulates on a cylindrical fiber was numerically simulated when a uniform external electric field was present across a cylindrical fiber. In order to investigate the mechanism of linear dendrite formation which is observed under the above electrostatic condition, the electrostatic forces between a newly introduced particle and each deposited particle were calculated and compared with those between the particle and fiber As a result of this study it was found that dielectrophoretic forces between the oncoming particle and fiber play principal roles in linear dendrite formation.

  • Experiments on granular filtration of polydispersed aerosols were conducted to determine the changes in pressure drop necessary to maintain a given gas flow rate as filter becomes clogged with deposited particles. Among the various variables which affect the increase in the pressure drop during the filtration, the most important one was found to be the size of the deposited aerosol particles. It was shown that for a given extent of the total deposition, the extent of increase in pressure drop increases with the decrease of the deposited aerosol size. For the general case where the deposited particles have different sizes, a procedure was proposed for correlating and predicting experimental results on pressure drop. This procedure was found applicable to bidispersed aerosols and polydispersed aerosols.

Aerosol Losses in a 100L $Tedlar^{(R)}$ Bag

  • Aerosol losses in a 100L Tedlar$^{(R)}$ bag were investigated for the aerosols with number median diameter of 0.05 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and number concentration of 6.4 ${\times}$ 10$^4$ cm$^{-3}$ . Over a 1 hr period, loss of particles in the bag is apparent, and the volume decrease with time is significant. The number concentration, surface area, and volume concentration of the aerosols decreased to 34, 50, and 52% of the initial value in 30 min, respectively. This indicates that deposition to the walls was the main loss process for aerosols in the Tedlar$^{(R)}$ bag. Theoretical calculations showed that coagulations and deposition by diffusion and gravitational sedimentation would not change aerosol characteristics significantly, and the electrical force was the dominant loss process for particles in the Tedlar$^{(R)}$ bag over a 1 hr period.eriod.

  • Aerosol wall loss is an important factor affecting smog chamber experiments, especially with chambers made of Teflon film. In this work, the aerosol wall loss was investigated in 2.5 and $5.8-m^3$ cubic-shaped Teflon film chambers filled with ambient air. The natural change in the particle size distribution was measured using a scanning mobility particle sizer in a dark environment. The rate of aerosol wall loss was obtained from the deposition theory suggested by Crump and Seinfeld (1981). The measured rates of aero-sol wall loss were In a good agreement with the theoretical and experimental values given by McMurry and Rader (1985), implying that the electrostatic effect enhances particle deposition on the chamber wall. The significance of aerosol wall loss correction was demonstrated with the photochemical reaction experiments using the ambient air.

  • Atmospheric pressure- plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition(AP-PECVD)Processes are recognized as promising and cost effective methods for wide-area coating on sheets of steel, glass, polymeric web, etc. In this study, $SiO_xC_y$ thin films were deposited by using AP-PECVD with a dielectric barrier discharge(DBD). The characteristic of $SiO_xC_y$ thin films were investigated as afunction of the HMDSO/O2/He flow rate. And the moisture permeability of $SiO_xC_y$ thin films was studied. The $SiO_xC_y$ thin films were characterized by the Fourier-transformed Infrared(FT-IR) spectroscopy and also investigated by X-ray photo electron spectroscopy(XPS), Auger Electron Spectroscopy(AES). The moisture permeability of $SiO_xC_y$ thin films was investigated by $H_2O$ permeability tester Detailed experimental results will be demonstrated through th present work.
