  • Wallenberg's syndrome is well known of dorsolateral medullary syndrome. A 56-year-old women was admitted because vertigo, vomitting, vertiginous ataxia, ipsilateral loss Rt. face and Lt. lower limb sense. The result of all performed laboratory tests were normal, but Sr-MRI scan was right lateral medullary infarction. And Br-MRA was focal stenosis of Lt. ICA. We present here one case of Wallenberg's syndrome, who was admitted at Kyungwon University Hospital From 25th Apr. to 21th May. 1998.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to report the effect of Korean medicine treatment on a cerebellar infarction patient suffering from vertigo, ataxia, and nausea. Methods: We treated the patient with herbal medicine (Cheonghunhwadam-tang), acupuncture, and physical therapy. Clinical symptoms were assessed with a numeral rating scale (NRS), the Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI), and Study Short Form-36 (SF-36). Results: After 24 days of treatment, the vertigo, ataxia, and nausea symptoms were all improved, and the NRS, DHI, and SF-36 scores showed improvement. Conclusion: This case shows that Korean medicine treatments were effective in alleviating the symptoms of cerebellar infarction.

  • A twelve-month old female, shih-tzu, was presented to diagnose a hind limb ataxia to the Animal Teaching Hospital, Gyeongsang National University. Even though a variety of physical and neurological examination was performed, the cause of the ataxia was not understood. In serum analysis, an elevated levels of ALT, $\gamma$-GTP and LDH were found. A gallstone was subsequently observed at the right 9 and 10th intercostal region on ultrasonography and radiography. Cholelithiasis was diagnosed, and then cholecystotomy was undertaken. No complications were occurred after the operation. The gallstone removed by cholecystotomy was composed of calcium, carbonate and oxalate, identified by a black pigment gallstone.

  • A 2-year old castrated male Alaskan malamute was referred with primary complaints of marked anemia, hemeglobinuria and depression. Laboratory tests revealed canine babesiois with severe anemia. The dog was treated by blood transfusion and beneril (diminazene aceturate, 3.5 mg/kg IM). Two days after Beneril injection, the dog suddenly showed ataxia progressing to paresis. MRI revealed irregularly diffused lesions in the cerebellum. The case was tentatively diagnosed as cerebellar encephalopathy caused by diminazene toxicity. The dog successfully recovered following steroid therapy.

  • We have used cDNA microarray hybridization to identify gene regulated in response to gamma-irradiation in U-937 cell. The cDNA-chip was composed entirely of 1,000 human cancer related gene including apoptosis and angiogenesis etc. In gamma-irradiated U-937 cell, highly charged protein, ribosomal protein L32, four and a half LIM domains 3, lipocalin 2 (oncogene 24p3) and interleukin 15, ataxia telangiectasia mutated (includes complementation groups A, C and D) genes showed increased level of its transcription, and cell division cycle 25A, dihydrofolate reductase, topoisomerase (DNA) II beta(180kD), kinase suppressor of ras and strarigin genes showed reduced level of its transcription compared to untreated U-937 cell. The significant change of level of transcription was not found in well-known ionizing radiation(IR)-responsive gene, such as transcription factor TP53 and p53 related gene, except ataxia telangiectasia mutated gene.

  • Miller Fisher syndrome (MFS) is characterized by the acute ophthalmoparesis, ataxia and areflexia. We describe the case of 70-year-old man with cardinal symptom of MFS and active pulmonary tuberculosis (Tb). A thorough evaluation led to the diagnosis of MFS and treatment with intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) was started. The complete resolution of ophthalmoparesis and ataxia was observed from the fourth day of IVIg treatment. This is the first report to describe a case of MFS that developed in patient pulmonary tuberculosis.

  • Cocklebur poisoning in livestock can cause sudden death, with clinical signs include depression, inappetite, blindness, reluctance to move, hypersensitivity, ataxia and coma. The cause of cocklebur poisoning is ingestion of cocklebur sprout or seed, which contains carboxyatractyloside. In December 2020, a 47 month-old Hanwoo suddenly developed ataxia, and died after several hours. Hay mixed cocklebur seeds was fed to Hanwoo for 4 days before the symptoms. At autopsy, petechia and ecchymosis were seen on serous membrane of rumen and intestines. Peritoneal cavities contained a yellowish fluid and, hypoglycemia (Glu <20 mg/dL) was measured in blood test result. Microscopic lesions were karyolysis of centriloular hepatocyte and hemorrhage. Based on autopsy, blood and histopathological test, we diagnosed this case as cocklebur poisoning in Hanwoo.

  • Ataxia-telangiectasia mutated (ATM), a master kinase of the DNA damage response (DDR), phosphorylates a multitude of substrates to activate signaling pathways after DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs). ATM inhibitors have been evaluated as anticancer drugs to potentiate the cytotoxicity of DNA damage-based cancer therapy. ATM is also involved in autophagy, a conserved cellular process that maintains homeostasis by degrading unnecessary proteins and dysfunctional organelles. In this study, we report that ATM inhibitors (KU-55933 and KU-60019) provoked accumulation of autophagosomes and p62 and restrained autolysosome formation. Under autophagy-inducing conditions, the ATM inhibitors caused excessive autophagosome accumulation and cell death. This new function of ATM in autophagy was also observed in numerous cell lines. Repression of ATM expression using an siRNA inhibited autophagic flux at the autolysosome formation step and induced cell death under autophagy-inducing conditions. Taken together, our results suggest that ATM is involved in autolysosome formation and that the use of ATM inhibitors in cancer therapy may be expanded.

  • A 6-month-old female Border Collie presented with a history of collapse after strenuous exercise. The dog was normal between episodes but experienced loss of focus and ataxia after exercise. This is particularly noticeable under hot weather conditions. No remarkable findings were observed in the diagnostic tests. Based on these results, the patient was tentatively diagnosed with Border Collie collapse (BCC). After exercise restriction, the dog had no episode of collapse and remained clinically well with no signs until the follow-up period of 8 months was complete. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of BCC in South Korea.
