  • This paper is concerned with the dynamic modeling and controller design for a cylindrical shell equipped with MFC actuators. The dynamic model was derived by using Ravleigh-Ritz method based on Donnel-Mushtari shell theory. The boundary conditions at both ends were assumed to be shear diaphragm. To verify the theoretical results, a cylindrical shell structure made of aluminum was built ana tested by using impact hammer. Experimental results show that there are little discrepancies compared to theoretical results because of the boundary conditions at both ends. The MFC actuators were glued to the cylindrical shell in longitudinal and circumferential directions. The PPF controller were designed for lowest two modes and applied to the MFC actuators. The experimental results show that vibrations can be successfully suppressed.

  • This study deals with the free vibration of two identical circular plates coupled with a bounded fluid. An analytical method based on the finite Fourier-Bessel series expansion and Rayleigh-Ritz method is suggested. In the theory, it is assumed that the ideal fluid in a rigid cylindrical container and the two plates are clamped along the plate edges. The proposed method is verified by the finite element analysis using commercial program with a good accuracy. Two transverse vibration modes, namely in-phase and out-of-phase, are observed alternately in the fluid-coupled system when the number of nodal circles increases for the fixed nodal diameter. The effect of gap between the plates on the fluid-coupled natural frequencies sis also investigated.

  • In this paper, the dynamic stability of a cracked simply supported pipe conveying fluid is investigated. In addition, an analysis of the flutter and buckling instability of a cracked pipe conveying fluid due to the coupled mode(modes combined) is presented. Based on the Euler-Bernouli beam theory, the equation of motion can be constructed by using the Galerkin method. The crack section is represented by a local flexibility matrix connecting two undamaged pipe segments. The stiffness of the spring depends on the crack severity and the geometry of the cracked section. The crack is assumed to be in the first mode of fracture and to be always opened during the vibrations. This results of study will contribute to the safety test and a stability estimation of the structures of a cracked pipe conveying fluid.

  • This study aims to investigate the dynamic behaviour of a parabolic arch with initial deflection by using the elasto-plastic finite element model where the von-Mises yield criteria have been adopted. The initial deflection of arch was assumed by the high order polynomial of ${\omega}_i$ = ${\omega}_o$${(1-{(2x/L)}^m)}^n$) and the sinusoidal profile of ${\omega}_i$ = ${\omega}_o$$\sin$(n$\pi$x/L). Several numerical examples were tested considering symmetric initial deflection modes when the maximum initial deflection of an arch is fixed as L/500, L/1000, L/2000 or L/5000. The effects of polynomials order on the dynamic behavior of arch were not conspicuous. The most unfavorite dynamic response occurs when the maximum initial deflection varies from L/1000 to L/4000 if the initial deflection mode is represented by high order polynomials.

  • The paper investigates the influence of lateral restraint on the buckling behaviour of plate under non-uniform compression. The unloaded edges are assumed to be partially restrained against translation in the plane of the plate and the distributions of the resulting forces acting on the plate are shown. The stability analysis is done numerically using the Galerkin method and various strategies the economize the numerical implementation are presented. Results are obtained showing the variation of the buckling load, from free edge translation to fully restrained, with unloaded edges simply supported, clamped and partially restrained against rotation for various plate aspect ratios and stress gradient coefficients. An apparent decrease in the buckling load is observed due to these destabilizing forces acting in the plate and changes in the buckling modes are observed by increasing the intensity of the lateral restraint. A comparison is made between the budding loads predicted from various formulas in stability standards based on free edge translation and the values derived from the present investigation. A difference of about 34% in the predicted buckling load and different buckling mode were found.

  • The effects of applying the micro CHP system to the domestic sector in Korea were investigated using annual cooling and heating demand data. Four prime movers, micro gas turbine, PEMFC, gas engine and Stirling engine, were compared for three operational modes. Two way buy-back was assumed for both electricity and heat. The Stirling engine gave the lowest $CO_2$ emission per energy for 300kWh monthly electricity production. However, PEMFC became more effective when considering PURPA criteria. PEMFC generated the least greenhouse gas with higher electrical efficiency for cooling. The Stirling engine, however, became competitive for heating with higher total efficiency.

  • This paper is concerned with development of an enhanced quadratic Mindlin plate bending element. The behavior of the proposed plate element is further improved by the coupled use of non-conforming displacement modes, the selectively reduced integration scheme, and the assumed shear strain fields. The improvement may be attributable to the fact that the merits of these improvement techniques are merged in the formation of the new element in a complementary manner. The proposed quadratic finite element passes the patch tests, does not show spurious mechanism, and does not produce shear locking phenomena even with distorted meshes. It is shown that the element produces reliable solutions through numerical tests for standard benchmark problems. It is also noted that the element is applicable to transient dynamic analysis of Mindlin plates.

  • A method of stochastic dynamic analysis of suspension bridge subjected to random wind loads has been developed in this paper. Example analyses are carried out by mode superposition method(MSM), mode acceleration method(MAM) and advanced mode acceleration method(AMAM) in frequency domain for the Nam-Hae Bridge. In this study the statistical characterics of random wind loads we assumed to be Gaussian stationary zero mean processes. The considered structural response quanties are displacements, shear forces and bending moments. The mean extreme responses are approximately calculated by three times of standard deviations. The followings are the conclusions from this study. 1. Numerical results which obtained by three methods of computer program developed in this paper agree reasonably well when the numbers of modes increase. 2. AMAM is simple, accurate, economic and reliable method compared with the MSM and the MAM.

  • Brain potential is described using the mesocolumnar activity defined by averaged firings of excitatory and inhibitory neuron of neocortex. Lagrangian is constructed based on SMNI(Statistical Mechanics of Neocortical Interaction) and then Euler Lagrange equation is obtained. Excitatory neuron firing is assumed to be amplitude- modulated dominantly by the sum of two modes of frequency .omega. and 2 .omega. . Time series of this neuron firing is calculated numerically by Euler Lagrangian equation. I .omega. L related to low frequency distribution of power spectrum, I .omega. H hight frequency, and Sd(standard deviation) were introduced for the effective extraction of the dynamic property in the simulated brain potential. The relative behavior of I .omega. L, I .omega. H, and Sd was found by parameters .epsilon. and .gamma. related to nonlinearity and harmonics respectively. Experimental I .omega L, I .omega. H, and Sd were obtained from EEG of human in rest state and of canine in deep sleep state and were compared with theoretical ones.

  • Damage assessment for buried structures against an internal blast is conducted by considering the soil-structure interaction. The structural element under analysis is assumed to be rigid-plastic and simply-supported at both ends. Shear failure, bending failure and combined failure modes are included based on five possible transverse velocity profiles. The maximum deflections with respect to shear and bending failure are derived respectively by employing proper failure criteria of the structural element. Pressure-Impulse diagrams to assess damage of the buried structures are subsequently developed. Comparisons have been done to evaluate the influences of the soil-structure interaction and the shear-to-bending strength ratio of the structural element. A case study for a buried reinforced concrete structure has been conducted to show the applicability of the proposed damage assessment method.
