  • In this paper, the purpose is to investigate the natural frequency of a cracked Timoshenko cantilever beams by FEM(finite element method) and experiment. In addition, a method for detection of crack in a cantilever beams is presented based on natural frequency measurements. The governing differential equations of a Timoshenko beam are derived via Hamilton's principle. The two coupled governing differential equations are reduced to one fourth order ordinary differential equation in terms of the flexural displacement. The crack is assumed to be in the first mode of fracture and to be always opened during the vibrations. The detection method of a crack location in a beam based on the frequency measurements is extended here to Timoshenko beams, taking the effects of both the shear deformation and the rotational inertia into account. The differences between the actual and predicted crack positions and sizes are less than 6 % and 23 % respectively.

  • Vibration analysis of embedded functionally graded (FG)-carbon nanotubes (CNT)-reinforced piezoelectric cylindrical shell subjected to uniform and non-uniform temperature distributions are presented. The structure is subjected to an applied voltage in thickness direction which operates in control of vibration behavior of system. The CNT reinforcement is either uniformly distributed or functionally graded (FG) along the thickness direction indicated with FGV, FGO and FGX. Effective properties of nano-composite structure are estimated through Mixture low. The surrounding elastic foundation is simulated with spring and shear constants. The material properties of shell and elastic medium constants are assumed temperature-dependent. The motion equations are derived using Hamilton's principle applying first order shear deformation theory (FSDT). Based on differential cubature (DC) method, the frequency of nano-composite structure is obtained for different boundary conditions. A detailed parametric study is conducted to elucidate the influences of external applied voltage, elastic medium type, temperature distribution type, boundary conditions, volume percent and distribution type of CNT are shown on the frequency of system. In addition, the mode shapes of shell for the first and second modes are presented for different boundary conditions. Numerical results indicate that applying negative voltage yields to higher frequency. In addition, FGX distribution of CNT is better than other considered cases.

  • The natural frequency of a beam plays an important role in not only vibration analysis but also understanding its dynamic characteristics. It is complicated to analyse the natural frequency of a stepped beam with discontinuously varying section. Approximate analysis methods such as Rayleigh-Ritz method, FEM, etc. are frequently used for the vibration analysis of stepped beams. In such a case, accuracy of these methods depends upon the number of partitioned elements, the number of the iterations in calculation and the assumed mode shape. This study presents an approximate analysis method for the fundamental natural frequency analysis of stepped cantilever beam, using equivalent beam transformation technique. Validity and usefulness are verified by comparing the proposed method with FEM for several example problems.

  • The natural frequency of a beam plays a critical role in the dynamic analysis of beams. Especially it is a complicated and difficult task to analyse the natural frequency of a stepped beam with an irregularly varying section. The lumped mass methods, multi-degree of freedom analyses, are mainly used for the analysis of this kind of stepped beams. The accuracy of these methods are determined by the number of the partitions of elements, the number of the iterations in calculation, and the accuracy of assumed mode shapes. This study presents a method of transformation from symmetrically stepped beams to an equivalent beam and a method of the eigenvalue analysis. Appropriateness and utility of this method are demonstrated by comparing examples from other literatures and various models.

  • Radioactive nuclides deposited on out-of-core surface after the radiation in the core by the transport of corrosion products (CRUD) through the primary coolant system in PWR which is the major plant type in Korea, are leading sources of radiation exposure to plant maintenance personnel. Thus, the optimal chemistry operation method is required for the reduction of radiation exposure by the corrosion products. This study analysed the actual water chemistry operation data of four operating domestic PWRs. And in order to evaluate the coolant chemistry operation data, a computer code which can calculate the activity buildup in the various chemistry conditions of PWR coolant was employed. Through the analysis of comparison between the activity buildup of actual water chemistry operation mode and that of assumed Elevated Li operation mode calculated by the computer code, it was found that the out-of core radioactivity can be reduced by diminishing the deposition of corrosion products on the core in case that the Elevated Li operation mode is applied to the coolant chemistry operation of PWR. And the higher coolant pH operation was shown to have the advantage of the reduction of out-of-core activity buildup if the integrity of system structural materials and fuel cladding is guaranteed.

  • In this paper, we propose an automatic switching technology between the ad-hoc and the infrastructure modes without user intervention in the IEEE 802.11b wireless LAN. Also, we design our proposed technology and implemented on the Linux machine. For this operation, the area within an Access Point (AP) coverage is defined as a switching area, and a node without any transmission in this area is assumed to be able to relay frames between the AP and nodes in the shaded area that is outside the coverage and cannot reach the AP. By using the proposed technology, it is possible to provide the seamless Internet access service to nodes at the ad-hoc mode in the shaded area. In this paper, we explains the operation of the detection method of the switching area, presents the flowchart and implementation environment. To prove the operation of our technology, we obtain the results of captured packets transmitted between nodes and throughput results through ftp transmission experiment. Hence, we can see that our proposed scheme can be improve the wireless access service in wireless and mobile networks.

  • Based on Von Karman-Donnell kinematic assumptions for laminated shells, the nonlinear vibration behaviour of antisymmetrically or asymmetrically laminated cross-ply circular cylindrical shells with clamped and simply-supported ends are studied by a multi-mode approach. A equation is formulated and satisfies the associated compatibility equation and all boundary conditions. The displacement function is assumed to take the form of the lowest linear vibration mode and to satisfy continuity of the circumferential displacement. The nonlinear vibration equation is derived by the Galerkin's method. And nonlinear frequency is obtained by using the harmonic balance method as a function of lamination parameters, material constants, aspect ratio and amplitude of vibration. The effect of initial imperfection is also included. Results of the non-linear vibration are presented for different amplitudes of initial imperfection and four sets of boundary conditions. Present results are compared well with existing analysis results.

  • The mode of inheritance of total milk yield and its genetic parameters were investigated in Churra dairy sheep through segregation analyses using a Monte Carlo Markov Chains (MCMC) method. Data which consisted of 7,126 lactations belonging to 5,154 ewes were collected between 1999 and 2002 from 15 Spanish Churra dairy flocks. A postulated major gene was assumed to be additive and priors used for variance components were uniform. Based on 50 000 Gibbs samples from ten replicates chains of 100,000 cycles, the estimated marginal posterior means${\pm}$posterior standard deviations of variance components of milk yield were $23.17{\pm}18.42$, $65.20{\pm}25.05$, $120.40{\pm}42.12$ and $420.83{\pm}40.26$ for major gene variance ($\sigma_G^2$), polygenic variance ($\sigma_u^2$), permanent environmental variance ($\sigma_{pe}^2$) and error variance ($\sigma_e^2$), respectively. The results of this study showed the postulated major locus was not significant, and the 95% highest posterior density regions ($HPDs_{95%}$) of most major gene parameters included 0, and particularly for the major gene variance. The estimated transmission probabilities for the 95% highest posterior density regions ($HPDs_{95%}$) were overlapped. These results indicated that segregation of a major gene was unlikely and that the mode of inheritance of total milk yield in Churra dairy sheep is purely polygenic. Based on 50,000 Gibbs samples from ten replicates chains of 100,000 cycles, the estimated polygenic heritability and repeatability were $h^2=0.20{\pm}0.05$ and r=$0.34{\pm}0.06$, respectively.

  • In this paper, the stress intensity factor, energy release rate and crack opening displacement are computed using the finite element method for axisymmetric viscoelastic cylinders with the penny-shaped and circumferential cracks. The triangular elements with quarter point nodes are used to describe the stress singularity around the crack edge. The analytical solutions are also derived by using the elastic-viscoelastic correspondence principle and compared with the numerical results to show the validity and accuracy of the presented method. Viscoelastic materials are assumed to behave elastically in dilatation and like a three-parameter standard linear solid.

  • Parametric and forced non-linear vibrations of an axially moving rotor both in non-resonance and near-resonance cases have been investigated analytically in this paper. The axial speed is assumed to involve a mean value along with small harmonic fluctuations. Hamilton's principle is employed for this gyroscopic system to derive three coupled non-linear equations of motion. Longitudinal inertia is neglected under the quasi-static stretch assumption and two integro-partial-differential equations are obtained. With introducing a complex variable, the equations of motion is presented in the form of a single, complex equation. The method of multiple scales is applied directly to the resulting equation and the approximate closed-form solution is obtained. Stability boundaries for the steady-state response are formulated and the frequency-response curves are drawn. A number of case studies are considered and the numerical simulations are presented to highlight the effects of system parameters on the linear and nonlinear natural frequencies, mode shapes, limit cycles and the frequency-response curves of the system.
