  • The first, this study analyzed empirically the effects of net profit on sales, total asset turnover and debt ratio on return on equity, the second, verified debt' s mediating effect on return on investment and return on equity and finally, tested the effect of adjusted debt ratio on return on equity in the small medium sized enterprises. Generally speaking, using debt has a positive effect on return on equity. Meanwhile, using debt accelerate return on equity through leverage effect in the quadric function curve model. Eventually, using debt has a positive and negative effects on return on equity. Accordingly, because of the debt' janus-faced reality, using debt is restricted within the level that operating cash flow(or return on asset) excess interest(or rate of interest).

  • The purpose of this paper is to explore the possibility for Korean entertainment companies to enter into debt financing. In particular, this study focuses on the possibility of issuing corporate bond and the asset backed securities (ABS) by two leading entertainment companies in Korea: SM Entertainment (SM) and YG Entertainment (YG). Depth interview with specialists such as investment bankers (IB), bond brokers, and financial directors and executives in entertainment companies was done. The results show that IB's opinion on issuing corporate bonds by SM and YG is positive. However, they may need to meet four requirements including maintaining stable cash-flow, diversifying sales source, enhancing accounting and legal transparencies and verifying managerial capabilities. In addition, Psy' s 'Gangnam style', his global hit song, turns out to have high potential as a base asset for ABS.

  • The research on the efficiency analysis of domestic auto parts companies is mostly based on the calculation of the magnitude of the performance creation such as the sales amount compared to the input assets. However, the performance indicators such as sales, operating profit, and net profit are directly related to the cost structure and This cost structure is affected by changes in the firm's asset and capital structure. As a result, it is considered that efficient capital procurement needs to be done at the same time to create efficient management performance through proper investment. This study focuses on this point and attempts to measure the efficiency of procurement capital relative to the sales and other performance indicators generated by the first 33 suppliers who supply parts to Hyundai Kia Motors. Among the methods of evaluating efficiency, the DEA model based on the linear programming method is most widely used as a nonparametric method but The efficient frontier-based DEA model has the limitation that it can not use the variables that have a downward influence on the efficiency. This is inadequate to directly consider variables such as borrowings and total liabilities related to capital procurement. In this study, the efficiency of capital procurement was measured using Worst Practice DEA and the improvement direction of the capital procurement aspect of domestic auto parts companies was suggested

  • This paper explores the relationship between shipping firm's investment and debt-ratio characteristics. Using a panel of 41 shipping firms from 2006 to 2011, this study finds evidence that debt/asset ratio and leverage are negatively associated with firm's investment activities. This relationship shows that volume of debt and capital structure are critical decision factor on firm's investment and capital financing. In terms of financial expenses to sales, positive relationship is existed with firm's investment finding that financing cost is important to investment. The previous study of the firm's investment in other sector also shows a negative relationship with debit ratio. This study is also interested in the extent to which the firm's investment is affected by firm size because there is general agreement that smaller firms have less access to external capital markets. As results, smaller companies group have more positive relationship with factors related to financing cost such as financial expenses to sales and tax. On the other hand, bigger companies group shows the evidence that firm investment is positive relationship with asset size. The analysis corresponding to economic fluctuation shows that debit ratio is more sensitive to firm's investment during a recession. On the other hand, financial expenses to sales is more related to firm's investment during an economic boom.

  • Purpose: In this paper, we investigate whether the endeavors for Six Sigma quality management by a firm have positive effects on its financial performance and the length of Six Sigma implemented period affects its financial status. We find a relationship between Six Sigma implemented period and several financial performance index using a smoothing spline function. Methods: A smoothing spline function is used in order to analyze the relationship between efforts for quality management and financial performance. Specifically, the return on assets, return on equity, sales cost and business fee are investigated as dependent variables and the efforts for quality management as independent variable. Results: As a result of the analysis, the indication is that companies that put effects into the Six Sigma quality management have a positive result in its financial status. In detail, the efforts for Six Sigma quality management have positive effects on total asset turnover ratio and Six Sigma implemented period on net income to net sales ratio. Additionally, companies with longer (shorter) period of Six Sigma program have more (less) improvement in its financial status. Conclusion: It can be concluded that the company's efforts for quality management positively influence financial performance.

  • To develop a shipping company insolvency prediction model, we sampled shipping companies that closed between 2005 and 2023. In addition, a closed company and a normal company with similar asset size were selected as a paired sample. For this study, data of a total of 82 companies, including 42 closed companies and 42 general companies, were obtained. These data were randomly divided into a training set (2/3 of data) and a testing set (1/3 of data). Training data were used to develop the model while test data were used to measure the accuracy of the model. In this study, a prediction model for Korean shipping insolvency was developed using financial ratio variables frequently used in previous studies. First, using the LASSO technique, main variables out of 24 independent variables were reduced to 9. Next, we set insolvent companies to 1 and normal companies to 0 and fitted logistic regression, LDA and QDA model. As a result, the accuracy of the prediction model was 82.14% for the QDA model, 78.57% for the logistic regression model, and 75.00% for the LDA model. In addition, variables 'Current ratio', 'Interest expenses to sales', 'Total assets turnover', and 'Operating income to sales' were analyzed as major variables affecting corporate insolvency.

  • This study investigates changes of market structure from 2001 to 2015 in the Korean daily newspaper industry using concentration and mobility measures. The main empirical results are as follows. First, the industry's total asset shows a U-shaped trend, despite the downward trend of the industry's total sales revenue. Second, the market concentration, measured in terms of assets, shows the trend of an inverted-U shape. The relatively small firms, measured in terms of assets, have on average gained in market share while the relatively large firm have lost. Third, market concentration, measured in terms of sales revenues, shows a U-shaped trend. the relatively small firms, measured in terms of sales revenues, have on average gained in market share while the relatively large firm have lost. My central argument has been that it is desirable to supplement traditional concentration measures with mobility statistics and trend analyses in investigating and regulating market structure.

  • This paper analyzes the topological structure of housing market networks with an application of minimal spanning tree method into apartment sales markets in the Capital Region over the period 2003.7-2014.3. The characteristics of topological network structure gained from this application to some extent share with those found in equity markets, although there are some differences in their intensities and degrees, involving a hierarchical structure in networks, an existence of communities or modules in networks, a contagious diffusion of log-return rate across nodes over time, an existence of correlation breakdown due to the time-dependent structure of networks and so on. These findings could be partially attributed to the facts that apartments as a quasi-financial asset have been strongly overwhelmed by speculative motives over the period investigated and they can be regarded as a housing commodity with the highest level of liquidity in Korea.

  • The housing market is divided into several sub-markets that operate independently. One of them is the distinction between rental and sales markets. Simultaneously, since the housing is a commodity as well as an asset, it has a close relationship between the rental market and the sales market. Due to the unique structure of Korea, it is difficult to apply the general method to analyze the housing market. This means there is a great deal of concern about side effects from the policy. Actually, the government's subsequent regulation of speculative demand in the future may be necessary to prevent market overheating, but at the same time, there is a fear that the rent will rise. Although changes in policy direction may be inevitable due to changes in market conditions, frequent and sudden changes in policy cause confusion in market participants, causing unrest in the housing market. This study aims to derive main factors and correlation with other housing market factor. These factors will be a base of qualitative housing market model to analyze the market effect of the demand-supply shift. Modeling is based on the system dynamics methodology, which is useful for identifying interactions between variables reflecting various variables in the housing market. The model discussed in this study is expected to provide integrated insight into the key variables of the housing market, away from the monopolistic thinking. It can also be useful as a means of assessing the effectiveness of policies.

  • This explorative study examines the difference in firm performance according to the adoption of the core technology of the Fourth industrial revolution, including artificial intelligence(AI), internet of things (IoT), cloud computing, and big data technology. Additionally, we investigate the importance of internal organizational structure exclusively responsible for information security. We analyze unique microdata offered by the Korea Information Society Development Institute to examine the impact of the adoption of the new technologies and the existence of organizational structure for information protection on firm performance, i.e., firm sales. By considering the core information technology as powerful knowledge assets, we argue that the adoption of such technology leads firms to have comparative advantage comparing to the competitors. Also, we emphasize the need to consider the organizational structure suitable for information security, which can become a structural asset of a firm.
