Using the pyrolyzed carbon black (PCB) from waste tires, the performance of 13 mm dense-graded hot mix asphalt was evaluated. The Marshall mix design was carried out and the measured optimal asphalt content was 5.8%. The impact resonant test was conducted to obtain the elastic modulus and damping ratio of the hot mix asphalt. The elastic modulus of HMA increased with increasing amount of PCB. On the other hand, there was no significant change in the damping ratio. The Marshall mix design, indirect tensile test, permanent deformation test, and program analysis were carried out. The strength ratio of the PCB modified asphalt mixtures was within 10%. More 10% of PCB was not good for the permanent deformation of hot mix asphalt. From the pavement design program, the use of 5% PCB in hot mix asphalt showed a decrease in the top-down crack, bottom-up crack, and permanent deformation. Judging from the limited test and analysis, the use of 5% PCB is good for enhancing the pavement performance.

This study was conducted to evaluate effect of geogrid and fabric, which are used underneath the overlaid asphalt pavement for retarding reflection cracking by simulated laboratory test. In this study, an interlayer at the interface between old concrete pavement surface and overlaid asphalt mixture, and polymer-modifier were used as an effort of retarding reflection crack initiation and for strengthening mixture. Five products were used in preparation of asphalt concrete beam specimen which was tack coated on top of jointed concrete block. Simulated Mode I and II fracture test were conducted under wheel loading and results were compared among those products. From the test results, several material and reinforcement combinations were observed to have a significant retardation effect against reflection cracking. The most effectively strengthened pavement against reflection cracking was found to be the LDPE-modifier asphalt mixture with a grid reinforcement at the bottom.
Cracks in asphalt pavement occur due to changes in weather or impact from vehicles, and if cracks are left unattended, the life of the pavement may be shortened, and various accidents may occur. Therefore, studies have been conducted to detect cracks through images in order to quickly detect cracks in the asphalt pavement automatically and perform maintenance activity. Recent studies adopt machine-learning models for detecting cracks in asphalt road pavement using a Convolutional Neural Network. However, their practical use is limited because they require high-performance computing power. Therefore, this paper proposes a framework for detecting cracks in asphalt road pavement by applying a small deep learning model applicable to mobile devices. The small deep learning model proposed through the case study was compared with general deep learning models, and although it was a model with relatively few parameters, it showed similar performance to general deep learning models. The developed model is expected to be embedded and used in mobile devices or IoT for crack detection in asphalt pavement.

With the continuous industrial development, not only natural resource depletion, waste generation, but also various weather conditions are becoming more frequent. Efforts are continuing to recycle industrial by-products to overcome the climate crisis and save resources. Slag is a representative by-product generated in the steel industry, and it is characterized by improving rutting resistance and moisture sensitivity by increasing strength and reducing deformation when used as a material for asphalt concrete. On the other hand, slag has expansion properties so it is used as a relatively low-value-added material such as embankment and refilling materials. In order to expand the application of slag, an experiment was conducted to evaluate the crack resistance of slag asphalt concrete pavement. As a result of the indirect tensile strength test, it was found that the asphalt mixture using slag aggregate showed a value 1.13 times higher than that of the general HMA with the same particle size, and the toughness was 1.17 units, improving crack resistance. In addition, it was found that the failure number of the 4-point beam fatigue experiment and the slag asphalt mixture was 20,409, which was more than doubled compared to the general HMA. Furthermore, Overlay Test showed a tensile load residual rate of 4 times or more, improving crack resistance to repeated fatigue. Accordingly, the use of slag aggregate will likely have various advantages in improving the performance of asphalt concrete pavement.

This paper studies static crack growth of asphalt pavement using the extended finite element method (XFEM). To consider nonlinear characteristics of asphalt concrete, a viscoelastic constitutive equation using the Maxwell chain is used. And a linear cohesive crack model is used to regularize the crack. Instead of constructing the viscoelastic constitutive law from the Prony approximation of compliance and retardation time measured experimentally, we use a smooth log-power function which optimally fits experimental data and is infinitely differentiable. The partial moduli of the Maxwell chain from the log-power function make analysis easy because they change more smoothly in a more stable way than the ordinary method such as the least square method. Using the developed method, we can simulates the static crack growth test results satisfactorily.

Generally, asphalt binder modifier increases the viscosity at high temperature as well as at mixing and paving temperature, so that higher temperature is required to produce the hot-mix asphalt. Otherwise, wax is able to improve workability by means of decreasing the viscosity of asphalt binder. In this study, the effect of PE wax used to modify the asphalt binder was evaluated in laboratory. The properties of PE wax modified binder were compared with those of SBS and Crumb Rubber Modified binders. The results showed that wax type I has an effect on strengthening rut resistance as well as improving workability. However, wax type I weaken crack resistance due to making binder harder at intermediate temperature. The results also showed that wax type II has an effect on improving workability and on strengthening crack resistance due to making binder softer.
Many experimental and numerical approaches have been developed to evaluate paving materials and to predict pavement response and distress. Micromechanical simulation modeling is a technology that can reduce the number of physical tests required in material formulation and design and that can provide more details, e.g., the internal stress and strain state, and energy evolution and dissipation in simulated specimens with realistic microstructural features. A clustered distinct element modeling (DEM) approach was implemented In the two-dimensional particle flow software package (PFC-2D) to study the complex behavior observed in asphalt mixture fracturing. The relationship between continuous and discontinuous material properties was defined based on the potential energy approach. The theoretical relationship was validated with the uniform axial compression and cantilever beam model using two-dimensional plane strain and plane stress models. A bilinear cohesive displacement-softening model was implemented as an intrinsic interface and applied for both homogeneous and heterogeneous fracture modeling in order to simulate behavior in the fracture process zone and to simulate crack propagation. A disk-shaped compact tension test (DC(T)) with heterogeneous microstructure was simulated and compared with the experimental fracture test results to study Mode I fracture. The realistic arbitrary crack propagation including crack deflection, microcracking, crack face sliding, crack branching, and crack tip blunting could be represented in the fracture models. This micromechanical modeling approach represents the early developmental stages towards a 'virtual asphalt laboratory,' where simulations of laboratory tests and eventually field response and distress predictions can be made to enhance our understanding of pavement distress mechanisms, such its thermal fracture, reflective cracking, and fatigue crack growth.

For artificial ground greening construction without root-proofing layer, this research reviewed the effect on watertightness of asphalt waterproofing layer by plant roots penetration based on crack width, and crack penetrated roots. Experiment on concrete crack width was performed with three conditions such as 0.15, 0.30, and 0.45 mm, and all three conditions confirmed that all plant roots penetrations were made through crack area in 12 ~ 18 months. In addition, according to evaluation of effects on waterproofing layer by crack penetrated plant roots and in condition of 0.45 mm crack width, it indicated that penetration is made on asphalt waterproofing layer in 12 months due to roots penetration.
PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to investigate characteristics of crack spacing and crack width and their relationship in continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP) based on the data obtained from long-term field observations. METHODS : The crack spacings and crack widths are measured periodically over 10 years at two different CRCP sections: one with asphalt bond breaker beneath concrete slab, and the other with bonded lean concrete base beneath concrete slab. The effects of steel ratio, type of underlying layer, terminal treatment method, and seasonal temperature change on the crack characteristics are evaluated by analyzing the measured data. RESULTS : The CRCP with lean concrete base shows smaller crack spacings than those of the CRCP with asphalt bond breaker. As the steel ratio increases, both the crack spacing and crack width tend to decrease. The crack width becomes larger as the crack age increases, but once the crack age is over a certain value the crack width tends to converge. When the terminal anchor lug system is not used and the expansion joints are employed at the terminals, the crack spacings and crack widths increase near the terminal sections. The crack spacing and crack width seem to be proportional each other, but not necessarily linearly, and their relationship is more distinguished in the summer when the crack widths become smaller. CONCLUSIONS : The steel ratio, underlying layer type, terminal treatment method, and seasonal temperature change affect the characteristics of cracks and the crack spacing and crack width are related to each other.
This work is about the development or asphalt sealant using the waste edible oil. Asphalt sealant has been used for crack filler and bridge deck joint sealer Several plasticizers such as aromatic or paraffin process oils, DOP, Bunker C fuel oil, and waste edible oil were compounded with the basic components such as asphalt(AP-5), a thermoplastic elastomer(SBS triblock copolymer), a tackifying agent(petroleum resin), and stabilizers. Penetration, softening point, ductility, and elongation by tensile adhesion of those asphalt sealant compounds were measured. Their properties were changed largely depending on both the type and content of plasticizers. Waste edible oil and DOP were the best plasticizers for the low temperature tensile adhesion characteristics. Penetration and elongation by tensile adhesion of asphalt sealant compounds increased with the increase of waste edible oil content and decreased with the increase of talc content. The manufacture of asphalt sealant with low penetration and excellent low temperature tensile adhesion was possible by the recipe optimization.
