부산지역 PM10과 PM2.5 중의 금속 농도와 이온농도 특성 (Characteristics of Metallic and Ionic Concentrations in PM10 and PM2.5 in Busan)

  • This study analyzes the chemical composition of metallic elements and water-soluble ions in $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$. $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations in Busan during 2010-2012 were $97.2{\pm}67.5$ and $67.5{\pm}32.8{\mu}g/m^3$, respectively, and the mean $PM_{2.5}/PM_{10}$ concentration ratio was 0.73. The contribution rate of water-soluble ions to $PM_{10}$ ranged from 29.0% to 58.6%(a mean of 38.6%) and that to $PM_{2.5}$ ranged from 33.9% to 58.4%(a mean of 43.1%). The contribution rate of sea salt to $PM_{10}$ was 13.9% for 2011 and 9.7% for 2012, while that to $PM_{2.5}$ was 17.4% for 2011 and 10.1% for 2012. $PM_{10}$ concentration during Asian dust events was $334.3{\mu}g/m^3$ and $113.3{\mu}g/m^3$ during non-Asian dust events, and the $PM_{10}$ concentration ratio of Asian Dust/Non Asian dust was 2.95. On the other hand, the $PM_{2.5}$ concentration in Asian dust was $157.4{\mu}g/m^3$ and $83.2{\mu}g/m^3$ in Non Asian dust, and the $PM_{2.5}$ concentration ratio of Asian Dust/Non Asian dust was 1.89, which was lower than that of $PM_{10}$.

  • A single particle analysis, called low-Z electron probe X-ray microanalysis was applied to characterize the atmospheric aerosols collected during Asian Dust storm events in the year of 2000 and 2001. Most frequently encountered chemical species were the soil-originated species such as aluminosilicates, silicon dioxide, and calcium carbonate. Also various species such as carbon -rich, organics, sea salts, and some reacted calcium carbonate were identified. The observation of internally mixed particles oi calcium carbonate, calcium nitrate and/or calcium sulfate shows the occurrence of the heterogeneous reaction between Asian Dust particles and NO$_{x}$ and/or SO$_{x}$ species in the atmosphere.ere.

Effect of Hydro-meteorological and Surface Conditions on Variations in the Frequency of Asian Dust Events

  • The effects of hydro-meteorological and surface variables on the frequency of Asian dust events (FAE) were investigated using ground station and satellite-based data. Present weather codes 7, 8, and 9 derived from surface synoptic observations (SYNOP)were used for counting FAE. Surface wind speed (SWS), air temperature (Ta), relative humidity (RH), and precipitation were analyzed as hydro-meteorological variables for FAE. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), land surface temperature (LST), and snow cover fraction (SCF) were used to consider the effects of surface variables on FAE. The relationships between FAE and hydro-meteorological variables were analyzed using Z-score and empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis. Although all variables expressed the change of FAE, the degrees of expression were different. SWS, LST, and Ta (indices applicable when Z-score was < 0) explained about 63.01, 58.00, and 56.17% of the FAE,respectively. For NDVI, precipitation, and RH, Asian dust events occurred with a frequency of about 55.38, 67.37, and 62.87% when the Z-scores were > 0. EOF analysis for the FAE showed the seasonal cycle, change pattern, and surface influences related to dryness condition for the FAE. The intensity of SWS was the main cause for change of FAE, but surface variables such as LST, SCF, and NDVI also were expressed because wet surface conditions suppress FAE. These results demonstrate that not only SWS and precipitation, but also surface variables, are important and useful precursors for monitoring Asian dust events.

The Distribution Characteristics and Long-term Trend of Carbonaceous Species in Airborne Particulate in Seoul between 1986 and 1996

  • To characterize airborne particulate carbon and its temporal variation in the heavily industrialized metropolitan city, Seoul in South Korea, aerosol sampling was performed from 1986 to 1996. Correlation coefficients of elemental carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC) with mass concentration of fine particles ($\underline{\leq}$2.1 ${\mu}m$) are 0.73 and 0.51, respectively. EC concentrations of the fine particle mode are 10.1, 5.9, 4.5, and 7.4 ${\mu}g\;m^{-3}$ in winter, spring, summer, and autumn, respectively. On the other hand, OC concentration shows maximum value in winter and followed by autumn, summer, and spring. A seasonal peak in the ratio of OC to EC in fine particles was observed during the summer photochemical season from June to August. Concentrations of EC and OC in Asian dust storm events are generally higher than in non- Asian dust storm events except in 1990. The difference of EC concentrations between Asian dust storm periods and non-Asian dust storm periods are much larger than those of OC concentrations. There are slight increases of EC concentration between 1987 and 1990 and a gradual decrease between 1990 and 1996.

Composition and Size Variation of Airborne Fungal Spores in the Asian Dust Events (2000 ~ 2001)

  • PM (Particulate Matter) samples contained fungal spores were collected in the ambient air of Seosan, west Korea, in springtime of 2000 and 2001. PM concentrations were $199.8\mu{g}\;m^{-3}$ in the 1st Asian Dust Storm period (March, 23 ~ 24) and $249.4\mu{g}\;m^{-3}$ in the 2nd period (April, 7~9), 2000. Compared with the concentrations in 2000, relatively low PM concentration ($157.3\mu{g}\;m^{-3}$ ) was measured in the Asian Dust Storm period (April, 24 ~ 20) of 2001. Although there were somewhat differences for the total PM concentrations among the three periods, majorities of the PM were composed of coarse particles sized about 5 ~ 6 $\mu{m}$ over the periods of the two years. Diverse molds grown from fungal aerosols were observed in the PM samples and identified at the genus level. All the genera, Fusarium, Aspergillus, Penicillium, Basipetospora, Epicoccum and Monotospora are hyphomycetes in the division Fungi imperfecti (Deuteromycota). Especially, morphologically more diversified mycelia of hyphomycetes were grown on the fine PM sample (1.1 ~ 2.1 $\mu{m}$) than coarse PM samples in the periods of 2000. Furthermore, some molds were grown on even the background PM sample less than 0.43 $\mu{m}$ in the period of 2001. It was thought that some kinds of ultra fine sized fungal spores were transported by the Asian Dust Storm and suspended in the ambient air of study area during the events.

인천지역에서 황사 기간 동안 대기 중의 바이러스 검출에 관한 연구 (Detection of Pathogenic Viruses in the Atmosphere during Asian Dust Events in Incheon City)

  • 연구 배경 : 세계적으로 Asian dust로 알려져 있는 황사는 주로 봄철 중국과 몽고의 사막지역에서 발생하는 모래먼지로 수천 킬로미터를 이동하여 낙하하는 자연적으로 발생되는 대표적인 오염 물질이다. 한반도에 영향을 미치는 황사는 주로 $10{\mu}m$이하의 미세먼지($PM_{10}$)로서 $PM_{10}$의 증가는 황사현상의 증가와 매우 밀접한 관련이 있다. $PM_{10}$은 호흡기에 침착이 가능하고 따라서 호흡기 증상 및 폐기능에 영향을 미치는 것으로 알려져있으나 아직 이에 대한 병리기전의 연구는 미미하여 기존에 추정되는 $PM_{10}$의 병리기전 이외에 황사 먼지의 이동에 따르는 미생물의 전파, 특히 바이러스의 전파에 대한 연구는 임상적으로 의미가 있을 것으로 생각되며 황사시 바이러스 감염 질환 자체의 발생을 알아 보기위해 황사시 대기에서 시료를 채취하여 바이러스의 존재 유무에 대해 연구하였다. 방 법 : $PM_{10}$은 인천지역 10군데에서 측정하였으며 고용량 대기 포집기(HA 500F, Sibata, 일본)를 이용하여 하루에 한번씩 포집하였다. 공기포집기의 흡입용량인 500 L/min으로 6시간 시행하였다. 시료를 흡착하기 위하여 $0.25{\mu}m$ pore size의 지름이 110mm 인 Glass microfiber filter( Prefilter AP 15, 124mm)를 이용하였다. nfluenza virus, 구제역에 관계된 Piconaviridae의 Aphthovirus속인 RNA바이러스, Hog cholera virus 돼지콜레라 바이러스) 의 검출을 위해 수집한 membrane filter를 전처리하여 Polymerase chain reaction으로 바이러스를 확인하였다. 결 과 : 연구 기간 중 24시간 평균 $PM_{10}$수치는 황사 발생일에 $148.0{\mu}g/m^3$, 비황사발생일에 $57.0{\mu}g/m^3$ 로 차이를 보였다. 2003년과 2004년 4월부터 8월 사이에 채취한 시료에서 검출 대상 바이러스인 Influenza virus A, B, Hog cholera virus, 구제역에 관련된 Aphthovirus등은 검출되지 않았다. 결 론 : 연구는 연구기간 동안에 황사의 발생이 적어 충분한 연구가 되지 못하였으며, 또한 검출하고자 했던 바이러스질환의 발생도 적어 실제 황사와의 관련성을 규명하기에 적절한 연구가 이루어지질 못했다. 향후 황사 발생과 바이러스질환의 유행이 일치하는 시점에 좀더 광범위한 시료의 채취 방법으로 연구가 필요할 것으로 생각된다.

황사의 대기환경영향 (Impacts of Asian Dust on Atmospheric Environment)

  • ACE-Asia (Asian Pacific Regional Aerosol Characterization Experiment) in spring 2001 was a turning point to trigger international research interest on Asian dust (AD). This basically arose from the lack of research on AD, the important natural phenomenon to characterize the Northeast Asia. In contrast, health risk related to AD has been the primary concern in Korea. Although due in part to severe AD events of 2001~2002, research and mitigation measures on AD in Korea are typically based on the assumption that AD events are increasing in frequency and severity. However, contrary to the trend in Korea, the number of AD days and emission amounts of AD in China have decreased since 1980s. This paper reviews the impacts of AD on ambient air quality and variations in toxic substances during the AD event, reflecting the concern in Korea. While a great amount of dust particles flow into Korea during the AD event, a considerable amount of dust particles are locally generated as well. Since dust particles are mixed with toxic substances as they pass over polluted areas, the levels of toxic substances become lower in dust particles that do not pass over polluted areas. Broadening the research scope on AD is warranted to understand the AD as an important natural phenomenon, irrespective of its associated health risk.

겨울철 황사 모의시 황사배출량 산정식과 입력자료의 평가: 2007년 12월 29일 황사사례 연구 (Estimation of Dust Emission Schemes and Input Parameters in Wintertime Asian Dust Simulation: A Case Study of Winter Dust Event on December 29, 2007)

  • A case study was conducted for a severe wintertime dust event that occurred on December 29, 2007 in Korea. Three different dust emission schemes, namely, those of Marticorena and Bergametti (1995), Lu and Shao (1999), and Shao (2004) (hereinafter, referred to MB, LS, and S04 schemes, respectively) were implemented in Weather Research Forecast with Chemistry (WRF/Chem) to assess their performance in simulating wintertime Asian dust events. WRF/Chem simulation reproduces dust emission over Mongolia on December 27 and 28, 2007 and the onset timing of the dust event in Korea well. There is, however, a huge difference among the estimated dust emission amounts for the three schemes; the dust concentration derived by MB scheme is 6 times larger than that from LS scheme. The three schemes overestimate dust concentrations when comparing to observed surface-level $PM_{10}$ mass concentrations in Ganghwa, Seoul, and Yeongwol. This discrepancy is thought to be mainly due to the overestimated model winds and the surface condition such as snow cover fraction, which did not adequately represent the real conditions. Considering frozen soil effect on dust emission, the model results are comparable with observation data: it is important to consider frozen soil in simulating wintertime dust events.
