A study on the biocompatibility of two types of new glass-ceramics materials, metal disc and dental porcelain that were already made for dental artificial tooth in the previous study, have been attempted. The chemical behavior and the Victor's hardness change in she artificial saliva and Ringer's solution have been also investigated. From the experiment of Implantation of glass-ceramics Into dorsal subcutaneous tissue of Sprague-Dawley rats, glass-cerarmics did not show any particular system of rejection for histrocompatibility.
Salivary research is at a critical crossroads regarding the clinical application of the basic knowledge. The purpose of this article is to introduce the current progress on salivary research to Korean dental scientists. The accumulated results based on advance technologies such as protein chemistry, molecular biology, and structural biology have showed that salivary macromolecules need structural requirements for proper function. Currently, several concepts or principles, which can be applied to salivary macromolecules, have been suggested. These include the role of molecules' conformation on biological activity, their multifunctional nature, their redundancy of function, their amphifunctional properties, and the potential importance of complexing between molecules. These concepts and the information available will help the development of saliva substitutes, the design of drug carriers and chimera molecules with enhanced function and the development of gene therapy protocols. These approaches will alleviate or restore lost salivary function and can be used to treat various kinds of oral and systemic diseases.
Statement of problem. Acrylic resin is most commonly used for denture bases. However, acrylic resin has week points of volumetric shrinkage during polymerization that reduces denture fit. The expandability of POSS (Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane) containing polymer could be expected to reduce the polymerization shrinkage of denture bases and would increase the adaptability of the denture to the tissue. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to compare the dimensional stability in the conventional acrylic resin base, POSS-containing acrylic resin base, and metal bases. Materials and methods. Thirty six maxillary edentulous casts and dentures of different base were fabricated. Tooth movement and tissue contour change of denture after processing (resin curing, deflasking, decasting and finishing without polishing) and immersion in artificial saliva at $37^{\circ}C$ for 1 week and 4 weeks were measured using digital measuring microscope and threedimensional laser scanner. Results. The results were as follows: 1. The conventional resin group showed significant (p<0.01) dimensional change throughout the procedure (processing and immersion in artificial saliva). 2. After processing, the metal group and POSS resin group showed lower linear and 3-dimensional change than conventional resin group (p<0.01). 3. There was no statistically significant linear and 3-dimensional change after immersion for 1 week and 4 weeks in metal and POSS resin group. 4. In all groups, the midline and alveolar ridge crest area presented smaller 3-dimensional change compared with vestibule and posterior palatal seal area after processing and soaking in artificial saliva for 1 week and 4 weeks (p<0.01). Conclusion. In this study, a reinforced acrylic-based resin with POSS showed good dimensional stability.
Objectives: This study investigated the effect of red and white wine on color changes of nanofilled and nanohybrid resin composite. Materials and Methods: Sixty specimens of each resin composite were prepared. Baseline data color values were recorded using a spectrophotometer. Three groups of discs (n = 20) were then alternately immersed in red, white wine, and deionized water (as a control) for twenty five minutes and artificial saliva for five minutes for four cycles. Specimens were then stored in artificial saliva for twenty two hours. This process was repeated for five days following immersion in artificial saliva for two days. Subsequently, the process was repeated again. Data were analyzed by two-way repeated ANOVA, one-way ANOVA, and Tukey's HSD. Results: Red wine caused significantly higher color change (${\Delta}E^*$ > 3.3) than did white wine and deionized water (p < 0.05). Nanohybrid resin composites had significantly more color changes than nanofilled resin composite (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The effect of red and white wine on the color changes of resin composite restorative materials depended upon the physical and chemical composition of the restorative materials and the types of wine.

The objective of this study was to measure the leaching of filler (Si, Ba) from nanofiller-contained composites (Palfique Estelite $sigma^{{R}}$ (Tokuyama Dental Corp., Tokyo, Japan), $Z-350^{{R}}$ (3M ESPE, USA), Ceram X duo $E3^{{R}}$, $D3^{{R}}$ (Dentsply, Konstanz, Germany)) under different conditions. The samples used for the study of leachable components were made by insertion of the material into a circular mold, 10 mm in diameter and 3.0 mm high. Each specimen was placed in a disposable polystyrene vial containing 5 mL of distilled water, artificial saliva or 0.1N NaOH and kept in an oven at $37^{\circ}C$. ; water and artificial saliva - 150 days, 0.1N NaOH - 15days. Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) was used to determine the amount of Si and Ba in the test solutions. 1. Filler leaching was significantly great in 0.1N NaOH among all samples(p<.0.001). 2. When samples were stored in the distilled water, Estelite showed the lowest amount of Si leaching. When samples were stored in the artificial saliva, Z-350 showed the lowest amount of Si leaching. 3. There were significant differences in filler leaching between 3 storage medias and composite resins(p<.0.001). 4. Si and Ba leaching occurred in greater proportion when samples were stored in the artificial saliva than distilled water. 5. There were significant interactions in monthly filler leaching between leaching in artificial saliva and in distilled water, as well as the interaction between storage medium and filler(p<.0001). These results indicate that a continuous filler leaching of nanofiller-contained composite resins was in storing aqueous solutions under over time.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of artificial saliva contamination and decontamination procedures at different stages of a bonding procedure on the microtensile bond strength (MTBS) of two one-step self-etch adhesives and a two-step total-etch adhesive to dentin of primary teeth. Forty-two extracted sound primary molars were randomly divided into three groups depending on three adhesives, Scotchbond Universal Adhesive (SBU), All-Bond Universal (ABU) and Prime & Bond NT (PNT). For each adhesive, the teeth were allocated into seven groups. Except for control group, group 1, the groups were contaminated with artificial saliva at three different stages: the groups 2 and 3 - before adhesive application; the groups 4 and 5 - before adhesive polymerization; the groups 6 and 7 - after adhesive polymerization. Decontaminating procedures were rinsing, air-drying (group 2, 4, 6) and air-drying (group 3, 5, 7). The specimens were restored with composite resin (Filtek, Z350) and microtensile bond strength was measured. The data was analyzed with one-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD test (p < 0.05). In the control group, using PNT resulted in significantly higher bond strength than when ABU and SBU were used (p < 0.001). For three adhesives, the groups 2, 4 and 6 had greater bond strength than the groups 3, 5 and 7. Also, when the artificial saliva was contaminated before adhesive polymerization (group 4, 5), it showed a significantly lower bond strength. Generally the two-step total-etch adhesive generated a higher bond strength than the one-step self-etch adhesive. Artificial saliva contamination before adhesive polymerization led to a drastic decrease in bond strength, and rinsing with water followed by air-drying could not recover the bond strength.

The volatile constituents of the fresh roots of Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer have been investigated after treatment with artificial saliva and analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) using solid phase microextraction (SPME) fiber. Twenty peaks were detected in fresh ginseng, 5 of them were unknown peak, and mainly hydrocarbon components (${\alpha}$-pinene, ${\beta}$-pinene, myrcene, limonene, ${\beta}$-panasinsene, ${\beta}$-elemene, ${\beta}$-gurjunene, trans-caryophyllene, ${\alpha}$-gurjunene, ${\alpha}$-panasinsene, ${\alpha}$-neoclovene, trans-${\beta}$-farnasene, ${\alpha}$-humulene, ${\beta}$-neoclovene, ${\alpha}$-selinene, ${\beta}$-selinene, bicyclogermacrene) were detected. It's area percentage was increased about 10% in the fresh ginseng added artificial saliva during 40 minutes.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the dissolution components during corrosion of amalgams and to identify surface corrosion products in the modified Fusayama artificial saliva. Four type of amalgam alloys were used: low copper lathe cut amalgam alloy (Cavex 68), low copper spherical amalgam alloy (Caulk Spherical Alloy), high copper admixed amalgam alloy (Dispersalloy) and high copper single composition amalgam alloy (Tytin). Each amalgam alloy and Hg were triturated according to the manufacturer's direction by means of mechanical amalgamator (Capmaster, S.S.White), and then the triturated mass was inserted into the cylindrical metal mold which was 10mm in diameter and 2.0mm in height and condensed with compression of 150kg/$cm^2$ using oil pressor. The specimens were removed from the mold and stored at room temperature for 7 days and cleansed with distiled water for 30 minutes in an ultrasonic cleaner. The specimens were immersed in the modified Fusayama artificial saliva for the periods of 1 month, 3 months and 6 months. The amounts of Hg, Cu, Sn and Zn dissolved from each amalgam specimen immersed in the artificial saliva for the periods of 1 month, 3 months and 6 months were measured using Inductivity Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICPQ-1000, Shimadzu, Japan) and amount of Ag dissolved from amalgam specimen was measured using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (Atomic Absorption/Flame emission spectrophotometer M-670, Shimadzu, Japan). A surface corrosion products of specimens were analysed using Electron Spectroscopy Chemical Analyser (ESCA PHI-558, PERKIN ELMER, U.S.A.). The secondary image and back scattered image of corroded surface of specimens was observed under the SEM, and the corroded surface of specimens was analysed with the EDX. The following results were obtained. 1. The dissolution amount of Cu was the most in high copper admixed amalgam(Dispersalloy) and the least in high copper single composition amalgam(Tytin). 2. Sn and Zn were dissolved during all the experiment periods, and dissolution amounts were decreased as the time elapsed. 3. Initial surface corrosion products were ZnO and SnO. 4. Corrosion of ${\gamma}$ and ${\gamma}_2$ phase in low copper amalgams was observed and Ag-Cu eutectic alloy phase was corroded in low copper spherical amalgam(Caulk Sperical Alloy). 5. Corrosion of ${\gamma}$ and $\eta$' phase in high copper amalgams was observed and Ag-Cu eutectic alloy phase was corroded in high copper admixed amalgam(Dispersalloy). 6. Sn-Cl was produced in the subsurface of low copper amalgams and high copper admixed amalgam.

Feasibility of 3Y-TZP for dental implant abutment was evaluated under the Hertzian cyclic fatigue by examining the extent of the indentation damage and strength degradation. Fatigue test was conducted at contact loads of 500 to 3000 N and up to $10^6$ cycles in exact in vitro environments. At 500 N, no strength degradation and crack generation was observed up to $5\times10^5$ contact cycles. As load rose, the dramatic reduction in strength was observed when the damage transition from ring to radial crack occurred. The. extent of strength degradation was more pronounced in vitro environment probably due to chemical corrosion of artificial saliva through cracks introduced during large numbers of contacts.
The purpose of this experiment was to measure the amounts of nickel and chromium released from a simulated orthodontic appliance in artificial saliva. Simulated mandibular half-arch orthodontic appliances were composed of American Iron and Steel Institute type 304 brackets, Permachrome, Elgiloy, Australian wire, T.M.A. and Nitinol. The amounts of nickel and chromium released from sample were measured with atomic absorption spectrophotometer after 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 days. The cumulative amounts of nickel released from Permachrome, Elgiloy, Australian wire and T.M.A. reached a plateau after 6 days. But the cumulative amounts of nickel released from Nitinol increased continuously. Significant amounts of both nickel and chromium were solubilized from the simulated orthodontic appliances into artificial saliva. After 15 days, total cumulative amounts of nickel were $152.15{\mu}g$, $150.27{\mu}g$, $134.74{\mu}g$, $114.67{\mu}g$ and $93.39{\mu}$ from the Elgiloy, Australian wire, Nitinol, Permachrome and T.M.A., respectively. Total cumulative amounts of chromium from Permachrome, Australian wire, Elgiloy, Nitinol and T.M.A. were $100.83{\mu}g$, $83.64{\mu}g$, $81.61{\mu}g$, $14.90{\mu}g$ and $12.43{\mu}g$, respectively. The result showed that nickel released from Elgiloy and chromium released from Permachrome were more than any others.
