A gregarious pupal endoparasitoid Tetrastichsus sp. (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) was reared in vitro from oviposition to adult emergence on an artificial host. The host pupal case was made using 0.02 mm-thick polypropylene film, and was filled with a diet consisting of powders of Antheraea pernyi pupa, chicken yolk, infant formula, royal jelly, and Neisenheimer's salt solution. Female parasitoids reared in the artificial host produced smaller sized progeny than those reared in in vivo, but the adults reproduced fertile offsprings. Furthermore in vitro second-generation (G$_2$) females showed more improved biological characteristics, compared with their parents. The fecundity (mean no. adult progeny), oviposition period (days), and longevity (days) of G$_2$ female were evaluated as 45.7, 7.8, and 13.8, respectively Female biased sex ratio was obtained with 76.9% female progeny. The results demonstrated that Tetrastichus sp. is a promising parasitoid for in vitro mass production.
Berries of Korean mistletoe (Viscum album var. coloratum [Kom.] Ohwi) contained one seed, which have, in general, one or two embryos but very rarely three embryos. Mucilaginous substances in berries may help them adhere to the branches of host trees. It was observed that seeds need more than one and half years to develop into normal and healthy seedlings from the time of inoculation. Many factors such as adhesion of berry, thickness of host branch, orientation of haustorial root, etc. influenced the successful development of mistletoe plants. Through the application of six-year observation results on the germination of seeds and growth of seedlings, about 80% of germination rate for mistletoe seeds and 61% of survival ratio for germinated seeds, which is more than 23 times higher in natural conditions, were obtained after inoculation of seeds on the one-year-old branches of Malus pumila var. dulcissima and Quercus mongolica trees. The technological aspects of the success can be applied to other host plants and provide a critical clue to an artificial propagation system, for this medicinally valuable genus. This is the first successful report on artificial inoculation and plant development of Korean mistletoe.

Aecial host ranges of four Gymnosporangium species causing cedar-apple rust diseases, G. asiaticum, G. cornutum, 5. japonicum and G. yamadae, were investigated through artificial inoculation. Thirteen species of nine genera among Rosaceous plants, which have been reported as social hosts in Korea, were inoculated with fresh teliospores spores in early days of May of 2000 and of 2001, respectively. In the results, we re-confirmed that there was highly specific relationship between the rust species and aecial hosts and report new aecial hosts of four Gymnosporangium species. Teliospores of G. cornutum collected from Juniperus rigida successively produced spermogonia and aecia only on Sorbus alntifolia, the first report on host alteration of G. cornutum in Korea. Positive responses by teliospores of G. japonicum from J. chinenis of Suwon and from J. chinenis var. horizontalis of Jeju island were obtained only on P. villosa. Crataegus pinnatifida was confirmed as a new aecial host of G. viatium. Until this time, G. ymadae was believed to have Malus as the aecial host. However, teliospores of G. yamadae collected from J. chinensis var. kaizuka successively formed spermogonia and aecia on the leaves of Chaenomeles lagenaria, C. sinensis, Pyrus pyrtifolia var, culta, P. ussuriensis, Malus pumila and M. sileboldii. The date for maturation of spermogonia and aecia, and symptom development varied according to the rust fungi and aecial host plants, respectively.

Humankind has been searching for medicinal materials from various plant sources in an attempt to treat disease. Mistletoe is one indubitable plant source for these materials due to its effectiveness in treating various diseases, but it has almost disappeared from the mountainous areas of Korea due to excessive harvesting. In this study, in order to select host tree species for Korean mistletoe [Viscum album var. coloratum (Kom.) Ohwi] by seed inoculation and to clarify the effect of host specificity among various tree species were conducted for the purpose of gaining basic information for the artificial cultivation of Korean mistletoe. Almost all the seeds of Korean mistletoe germinated in vitro at the temperature of 15℃. Among host trees used in this study, Prunus mume showed the highest parasitic affinity with inoculated Korean mistletoe, compared with any other host plants. However, treatment of hormones could not increase the low survival rate of Korean mistletoe on the host trees.
The objectives of this study were to identify the aecial host ranges of four Korean Gymnosporangium species, G. asiaticum, G. cornutum, Gjaponicum and Gyamadae, and to verify the morphological characteristics of telia as diagnostic keys to the species. Thirteen Korean Rosaceous woody species were artificially inoculated with teliospores obtained from Juniperus species. There was high specificity between telial and aecial hosts and the fungal species, providing the first experimental proof on host alternation of these rust fungi in Korea. Telia on the witches' broom and on the small galls were identified as new telial characteristics in G asiaticum and in G. yamadae, respectively. Aecial hosts of G. asiaticum and G. yamadae showed varying responses in their susceptibility and in the days required for formation and duration of spermogonia and aecia after inoculation. Four telial host species in Juniperus were confirmed for the first time in Korea, which include J. chinensis var. kaizuka, J. chinensis var. horizontalis and J. chinensis var. globosa for G. asiaticum; and J. chinensis var. kaizuka for G. yamadae.
Modern production systems are very complex by request of automation, and failure modes that occur in thisautomatic system are very various and complex. The efficient fault diagnosis for these complex systems is essential for productivity loss prevention and cost saving. Traditional fault diagnostic system which perforns sequential fault diagnosis can cause catastrophic failure during diagnosis when fault propagation is very fast. This paper describes the Real-time Intelligent Multiple Fault Diagnosis System (RIMFDS). RIMFDS assesses current machine condition by using sensor signals. This system deals with multiple fault diagnosis, comprising of two main parts. One is a personal computer for remote signal generation and transmission and the other is a host system for multiple fault diagnosis. The signal generator generates various faulty signals and image information and sends them to the host. The host has various modules and agents for efficient multiple fault diagnosis. A SUN workstation is used as a host for multiple fault modules and agents for efficient multiple fault diagnosis. A SUN workstation is used as a host for multiple fault diagnosis and graphic representation of the results. RIMFDS diagnoses multiple faults with fast fault propagation and complex physical phenomenon. The new system based on multiprocessing diagnoses by using Hierarchical Artificial Neural Network (HANN).
The box tree pyralid, Glyphodes perspectalis, was reared on an artificial diet based on dried powder of box tree leaves, Buxus microphylla var. koreana, and INSECTA F-II (Nihon Nosan Co., Ltd) at a ratio of 3:7 (w:w) and analyzed in their developmental characteristics from $1^{st}$ to $4^{th}$ generation. The developmental period of larva reared on artificial diet was longer than that of larva reared on host plant. Significant difference in larval period was also observed between $1^{st}$ and other generation groups. Pupation rate was the highest in $4^{th}$ generation followed by $3^{rd}$, $2^{nd}$, $1^{st}$ and host plant group. Significant difference in pupal period was noted between $1^{st}$ and 3rd generation group. Emergence rate was the highest in $4^{th}$ generation group followed by $3^{rd}$, host plant, $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ generation group. There is a significant difference in male and female size between $1^{st}$ and $4^{th}$ generation group. Our result indicated that stable rearing of box tree pyralid through the year is possible by artificial diet, and the best adaptation to artificial diet was achieved at $4^{th}$ generation.

Competitive coevolution models, often called host-parasite models, are searching models that imitate the biological coevolution that is a series of reciprocal changes in two competing species. The models are known to be an effective method of solving complex and dynamic problems such as game problems, neural network design problems and constraint satisfaction problems. However, previous models consider only ectoparasites that live on the outside of the host when designing the models, not considering endoparasites that live on the inside of the host. This has a limitation to exploiting some information. In this paper, we develop an artificial adaptation model simulating the process in which hosts coevolve with both ectoparasites and endoparasites. In the model, the endoparasites play important roles as follows. By means of them, we can keep the history on results of previous competition between hosts and parasites, and use endogeneous fitness, not exogeneous. Extensive experiments are carried out to show the coevolution phenomenon and to verify the performance of the proposed model. Nim game problems and neural network problems are used as test-bed problems. The results are reported in this paper.
The cattle liver flukes were collected at daughter house and classified with gross morphology. The hepatica type was only 14 flukes (4.7%) and the gigantica type was 284 flukes (95.3%) among total 298 flukes collected. In order to determinate the intermediate host of the flukes, artificial infection with the miracidia to snail hosts, Radix auricularia and Austropelea ollula, were successfully carried out, but the development in the later was terminated at the sporocyst stage. Intermediate host of the cattle flukes used to hibernate in deep part of the stubbles of rice pady. The number of A. ollula that has been collected from a rice stubble was ranged 0 to 19. Their mean number was 7 snails per the stubble. In artificial infection with miracidia, the reasonable number of them were 1 to 9 and the snail size was 2 to 5mm in length. The productivility of metacercaria in the intermediate host was observed. The metacercarial production per snail was ranged 5.5 to 48.0 per one miracidium.
Since 1975, the studies on in vitro rearing Trichogramma spp., Anastatus japonicus Ashmead, Telenomus dendrolimusi Chu, Dibrachys cavus Walker, Habrobracon hebetor(Say), Bracon greeni Ashmead have been conducted successfully in China. The simulated “host-eggs" are made of polyethylene or polypropylene semispherical capsules, containing artificial diets, in which insectan pupal hemolymph is the main component. Manufacture of simulated “host larvae" are made of small rectangular parafilm of cotton-paper bags, containing artificial diets with insectan pupal hemolymph as the main component. Mass production of in vitro reared Trichogramma spp. and Anastatus japonicus and its utilization in the fields showed good effectiveness in controlling cotton bollworm, pine caterpillars, sugarcane borers and litchi stink bug.
