  • In metal forming technologies, the stamping process is one of the significant manufacturing processes to produce sheet metal components. It is important to design stamping process which can produce sound products without defect such as fracture and wrinkle. The objective of this study is to propose the feasible formability diagram which denotes the safe region without fracture and wrinkle for effective design of stamping process. To determine the feasible formability diagram, FE-analyses were firstly performed for the combinations of process parameters and then the characteristic values for fracture and wrinkle were estimated from the results of FE-analyses based on forming limit diagram. The characteristic values were extended through training of the artificial neural network. The feasible formability diagram was finally determined for various combinations of process parameters. The stamping process of turret suspension to support suspension module was taken as an example to verify the effectiveness of feasible formability diagram. The results of FE-analyses for process conditions within fracture and wrinkle as well as safe regions were in good agreement with experimental ones.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the factors that affect ammunition performance by applying data mining techniques to the Ammunition Stockpile Reliability Program (ASRP) data of the 155mm propelling charge. Methods: The ASRP data from 1999 to 2017 have been utilized. Logistic regression and decision tree analysis were used to investigate the factors that affect performance of ammunition. The performance evaluation of each model was conducted through comparison with an artificial neural networks(ANN) model. Results: The results of this study are as follows; logistic regression and the decision tree analysis showed that major defect rate of visual inspection is the most significant factor. Also, muzzle velocity by base charge and muzzle velocity by increment charge are also among the significant factors affecting the performance of 155mm propelling charge. To validate the logistic regression and decision tree models, their classification accuracies have been compared with the results of an ANN model. The results indicate that the logistic regression and decision tree models show sufficient performance which conforms the validity of the models. Conclusion: The main contribution of this paper is that, to our best knowledge, it is the first attempt at identifying the significant factors of ASPR data by using data mining techniques. The approaches suggested in the paper could also be extended to other types ammunition data.

  • Dental caries is considered to be caused by demineralization by organic acid produced by microorganism. But the formation of subsurface lesion in initial caries make it diffcult to explain by simple demineralization. This study is carried out on the basis of thermodynamic concept proposed by Margolis and Moreno. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of acid concentration and pH of lactate buffer system on the artificial caries lesion progress. 160 teeth without any crack, defect or opaque enamel were used and coated with nail varnish except the window ($2{\times}3$ mm). Under the constant degree of saturation(D.S.). The teeth were divided into 8 groups according to acid concentration(10mM, 25mM, 50mM, 100mM) and pH(4.3, 5.0, 6.0). Each group was immersed in buffer solution for 3, 6, 9, 18 days under controlled temperature($25^{\circ}C$). After cutting through the window and grinding, the specimens, 100-150 um in thickness, were imbibed in water or air and examined using polarilizing microscope. The depth of the surface and subsurface surface lesion were measured. 1. In the constant pH and D. S. value, the subsurface lesion progresses more rapidly as the concentration of lactic acid increases. (0.01, 0.025, 0.05, 0.1) 2. In the constant acid concentration and DS value, the subsurface lesion progresses more slowly as the pH increases. (4.3, 5.0, 5.5, 6.0) 3. The width of surface lesion seems to be constant independant of pH and acid concentration.

  • In recent years immediate implantation has been tried by a few clinicians. This study placed IMZ implants in the rabbit femur with and without bony defects around the implant for simulating fresh extraction site. And one group with bony defects used porous hydroxyapatite ganules(HA) to fill if and the other group left the bony defects around the implant. The purpose of this study was to compare the shear bond strength and the bony contact and formation around the implant. Fifteen rabbits were divided into three groups and placed 10 IMZ implants to each group. Implant sites were surgically prepared with IMZ drills kit and implants were placed(Control), artificial bony defect was created with Apaceram drills kit around the implant sites and implants were placed(Experimental I), bony defect was filled with porous hydroxyapatite granules(Experimental II). Thereafter, rabbits were sacrificed at 8th week and specimens were prepared and pushout tested for shear bond strength of bone-implant interface immediately. Undecalcified and decalcified specimens were prepared with Vilanueva and hematoxylin-eosin stain for light microscopic finding. The results of this study were as follows. 1. In the control group, mean shear strength of bone-implant interface was $2.614{\pm}0.680$ MPa, experimental I was $0.664{\pm}0.322$ MPa, and experimental II was $2.281{\pm}0.606$ MPa. There was significant difference between control and experimental I, between experimental I and experimental II, but did not show significant difference between control and experimental II statistically. 2. In the bony formation surrounding IMZ implant of the three groups, that of cortical bone is more advanced than cancellous bone area. 3. In the histological findings of undecalcified specimens, control and experimental II showed more than 50% of bony or osteoid formation at the bony-implant interface. 4. In the histological findings of undecalcified specimens, experimental I showed less than 50% of bony or osteoid formation at the interface, and observed partial bony defect in the coronal zone. 5. In the experimental II group, were observed direct bony contact to hydroxyapatite granules, and infiltration of a few giant cells. 6. No inflammatory responses were seen around the titanium implants and the hydroxyapatite granules.

  • For years, physicians and anatomists have been interested in the heart that has one functioning ventricle. Various terms have been suggested for this entity including single ventricle, common ventricle, double-inlet left ventricle, cor biatriatum triloculare, and primitive ventricle. In this report, the term "single ventricle" is utilized as suggested by Van Praagh, and is defined as that congenital cardiac anomaly in which a common or separate atrioventricular valves open into a ventricular chamber from which both great arterial trunks emerge. An outlet chamber, or infundibulum, may or may not be present and give rise to the origin of either of the great arteries. This definition excludes the entity of mitral and tricuspid atresia. An 11 year old cyanotic boy was admitted chief complaints of exertional dyspnea and frequent upper respiratory infection since 2 weeks after birth. He was diagnosed as inoperable cyanotic congenital heart disease, and remained without any corrective treatment up to his age of 11 year when he suffered from aggravation of symptoms and signs of congestive heart failure for 2 months before this admission. On 22nd of May 1979, he was admitted for total corrective operation under the impression of tricuspid atresia suggested by a pediatrician. Physical check revealed deep cyanosis with finger and toe clubbing, and grade V systolic ejection murmur with single second heart sound was audible at the left 3rd intercostal space. Development was moderate in height [135 cm] and weight[28Kg]. Routine lab findings were normal except increased hemoglobin [21.1gm%], hematocrit [64 %], and left axis deviation with left ventricular hypertrophy on EKG. Cardiac catheterization and angiography revealed 1-transposition of aorta, pulmonic valvular stenosis, double inlet of a single ventricle with d-loop, and normal atriovisceral relationship [Type III C solitus according to the classification of Van Praagh]. At operation, longitudinal incision at the outflow tract of right ventricle in between the right coronary artery and its branch [LAD from RCA] revealed high far anterior aortic valve which had fibrous continuity with mitral annulus, and pulmonic valve was stenotic up to 4 mm in diameter positioned posterolaterally to the aorta. Ventricular septum was totally defective, and one markedly hypertrophied moderator band originated from crista supraventricularis was connected down to the imaginary septum of the ventricular cavity as a pseudoseptum of the ventricle. Size of the defect was 3X3 cm2 in total. Patch closure of the defect with a Teflon felt of 3.5 x 4 cm2 was done with interrupted multiple sutures after cut off of the moderator band, which was resutured to the artificial septum after reconstruction of the ventricular septum. Pulmonic valvotomy was done from 4 mm to 11 mm in diameter thru another pulmonary arteriotomy incision, and right ventriculotomy wound was closed reconstructing the right ventricular outflow tract with pericardial autograft of 3 x 4 cm2. Atrial septal defect of 2 cm in diameter was closed with 3-0 Erdeck suture, and atrial wall was sutured also when rectal temperature reached from 24`C to 35.5`C. Complete A-V block was managed with temporary external pacemaker with a pacing rate of 110/min. thru myocardial wire, and arterial blood pressure of 80/50 mmHg was maintained with Isuprel or Dopamine dripping under the CVP of 25-cm saline. Consciousness was recovered one hour after the operation when his blood pressure reached 100 /70 mmHg, but vital signs were not stable, and bleeding from the pericardial drainage and complete anuria were persisted until his heart could not capture the pacemaker impulse, and patient died of low output syndrome 320 min after the operation.

  • Defects that occur during the manufacturing process or operation of a wind turbine blade have a great influence on its life and safety. Typically, defects such as delamination, pore, wrinkle and matrix crack are found in a blade. In this study, the detectability of the pores, a type of defect that frequently occur during manufacturing, was examined from the full field strain distribution determined with the image correlation technique. Pore defects were artificially introduced in four-ply laminated GFRP composites with $0^{\circ}/{\pm}45^{\circ}$ fiber direction. The artificial pores were introduced in consideration of their size and location. Three different-sized pores with diameter of 1, 2 and 3 mm were located on the top and bottom surface and embedded. By applying static loads of 0-200 MPa, the strain distributions over the specimen with the pore defects were determined using image correlation technique. It was found the pores with diameter exceeding 2 mm can be detected in diameter.

  • Purpose : Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is an autologous material with many growth factors, such as BMPs, PDGF, $TGF-{\beta}_1$, $TGF-{\beta}_2$, VEGF, and IGF, facilitating bone healing process. The prominent osteoconductive activity and the biodegradable nature of beta-tricalciumphosphate (${\beta}-TCP$) for bone grafts in animal experiments have been reported. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of PRP on the osteogenesis of ${\beta}-TCP$. Materials & Methods : Two artificial calvarial bone defects were made in 32 rabbits which were divided into 2 groups. In one group of 16 rabbits, autogenous bone / ${\beta}-TCP$ was grafted on each side of cranial bone defect. In the other group of 16 rabbits, mixture of ${\beta}-TCP$ and PRP / PRP alone was grafted on each side of the cranial bone defect. The animals were sacrificed at 2, 4, 8, and 12 weeks after surgery. The specimens were harvested and examined histologically and immunohistochemically by the expression of BMP2/4/7, PDGF, VEGF and $TGF-{\beta}_1$. Results : The mean volume of new bone formation was significantly higher at 4, 8, 12 weeks in autogenous graft than that in ${\beta}-TCP$. The BMP2/4 expression was significantly higher at 4 weeks in autogenous bone graft and at 4 weeks in mixture of ${\beta}-TCP$ and PRP and at 12 weeks in ${\beta}-TCP$. The expression of BMP7, PDGF, VEGF and $TGF-{\beta}_1$ showed no significant difference in autogenous, ${\beta}-TCP$, mixture of ${\beta}-TCP$ and PRP, and PRP alone during grafted bone regeneration. Conclusion : The results showed that PRP had no additional value in promoting healing process of ${\beta}-TCP$ grafts.

  • Defects generated in a railroad track that guides the railroad vehicle have the characteristic of growing fast; as such, the detection technology for railroad track defects is very important because defects can eventually cause mass disasters like derailments. In this study, a speed-up test facility was fabricated to investigate the feasibility of using magnetic flux leakage (MFL) technology for defect detection in a railroad track under speed-up condition; a test was conducted using a railroad track specimen with defects. For this purpose, an MFL sensor head dedicated to the configuration of the railroad was designed and test specimens with artificial defects on their surfaces were manufactured. Using the test facility, a speed-up test ranging from 4km/h to 12km/h was performed and defects including locations were successfully detected from MFL signals induced by defects with enhanced visibility by differentiating raw MFL signals. In the future, it should be possible to apply this system to a high-speed railroad inspection car by improving the lift-off stability that is necessary for speed-up of the developed MFL sensor system.

  • Alveolar cleft is a tornado-shaped bone defect in the maxillary arch. The treatment goals for alveolar cleft are stabilization and provision of bone continuity to the maxillary arch, permitting support for tooth eruption, eliminating oronasal fistulas, providing an improved esthetic result, and improving speech. Treatment protocols vary in terms of the operative time, surgical techniques, and graft materials. Early approaches including boneless bone grafting (gingivoperiosteoplasty) and primary bone graft fell into disfavor because they impaired facial growth, and they remain controversial. Secondary bone graft (SBG) is not the most perfect method, but long-term follow-up has shown that the graft is absorbed to a lesser extent, does not impede facial growth, and supports other teeth. Accordingly, SBG in the mixed dentition phase (6-11 years) has become the preferred method of treatment. The most commonly used graft material is cancellous bone from the iliac crest. Recently, many researchers have investigated the use of allogeneic bone, artificial bone, and recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein, along with growth factors because of their ability to decrease donor-site morbidity. Further investigations of bone substitutes and additives will continue to be needed to increase their effectiveness and to reduce complications.
