An Analysis of Acoustic Features Caused by Articulatory Changes for Korean Distant-Talking Speech

  • Compared to normal speech, distant-talking speech is characterized by the acoustic effect due to interfering sound and echoes as well as articulatory changes resulting from the speaker's effort to be more intelligible. In this paper, the acoustic features for distant-talking speech due to the articulatory changes will be analyzed and compared with those of the Lombard effect. In order to examine the effect of different distances and articulatory changes, speech recognition experiments were conducted for normal speech as well as distant-talking speech at different distances using HTK. The speech data used in this study consist of 4500 distant-talking utterances and 4500 normal utterances of 90 speakers (56 males and 34 females). Acoustic features selected for the analysis were duration, formants (F1 and F2), fundamental frequency, total energy and energy distribution. The results show that the acoustic-phonetic features for distant-talking speech correspond mostly to those of Lombard speech, in that the main resulting acoustic changes between normal and distant-talking speech are the increase in vowel duration, the shift in first and second formant, the increase in fundamental frequency, the increase in total energy and the shift in energy from low frequency band to middle or high bands.

음향학적 분석을 통한 노년층 연령에 따른 조음교대운동의 속도 및 규칙성 (Rate and Regularity of Articulatory Diadochokinetic Performance in Healthy Korean Elderly via Acoustic Analysis)

  • Aging is related to anatomical and physiological changes in respiratory and phonation organs. These changes influence articulation which leads to inaccurate speech and slow articulatory diadochokinesis(DDK). DDK indicates the range, rate, regularity, accuracy, and agility of articulation that reflect motor speech function. The purpose of this study is to investigate the rates and regularities of DDK in healthy Korean elderly through passive acoustic analysis (Praat). Thirty subjects between the ages of 65 and 94 participated in this study. Rate was observed for 5 seconds, while regularity was calculated based on the standard deviation on the following: 1) syllable duration of each task; 2) gap duration between syllables. Then, simple regression analysis was conducted in order to examine the effect of age on performance. The result showed that the slow rate was not a significant factor in terms of advancing age. Furthermore, regularity indicated a significant difference in the following: 1) /pʌ/, /kʌ/ and /pʌtʌkʌ/ in syllable duration; 2) /kʌ/ duration in the gap between syllables. In conclusion, articulatory coordination is reduced with the onset of aging. In particular, /kʌ/ would be a sensitive task for articulatory coordination.

IOPI를 활용한 조음기관 훈련 프로그램이 경직형 마비말장애의 조음 능력에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Articulation Abilities on the Articulator Strength Training by IOPI of Spasticity Dysarthric Speech)

  • 목적 : 본 연구의 목적은 IOPI 조음 근력 강화 훈련 프로그램이 경직형 마비말장애 환자들의 조음기관(혀, 입술) 근력 상승, 조음 정확도, 조음 교대운동 속도, 규칙성 및 정확도 변화에 끼치는 효과에 대해 연구하고자 하였다. 연구 방법 : 본 연구는 제주에 거주하는 경직형 마비말장애 환자 3명을 대상으로 제주 소재의 대학병원 언어치료실에서 기초선 단계, 7주간 주3회씩 1회기당 30분씩 중재를 한 후에 사후 평가를 실시하여 혀와 입술의 근력, SMST 조음선별검사 중 /ㄹ, ㅅ, ㅈ/ 조음 정확도, 조음 교대운동 속도, 규칙성 및 정확도 변화를 연구하는 단일대상연구를 실시하였다. 결과 : IOPI 조음 근력 강화 훈련 프로그램을 경직형 마비말장애 환자들에게 실시한 이후에 조음기관 근력, /ㄹ, ㅅ, ㅈ/ 조음동안 정조음 산출 수, 조음 교대운동 검사 결과 초당 /퍼/, /터/, /커/, /러/, /긍/, /아/, /퍼터커/ 산출 횟수의 증가와 조음 규칙성과 조음 규칙성 및 정확성에서 긍정적인 변화가 나타났다. 결론 : 본 연구 결과, IOPI 조음 근력 강화 훈련 프로그램이 경직형 마비말장애 환자들의 조음 정확도, 조음 교대운동 속도, 규칙성 및 정확도 향상을 도모하였으며, 추후 IOPI를 다양한 하위 유형의 마비말장애 환자에게 실시하여 각 하위 유형 간 차이를 비교하고, 마비말장애의 가장 대표적인 뇌성마비 아동들에게 가정에서 IOPI를 활용한 조음기관 기능 훈련을 연계한 프로그램 적용 이후 조음 능력의 변화에 대해 연구한다면 매우 유용할 것으로 사료된다.

치료적 노래부르기를 통한 두경부암 환자의 말산출 기능 향상 사례 (Therapeutic Singing on Speech Production Parameters in Head and Neck Cancer Patients: Case Studies)

  • 본 연구는 세 명의 두경부암 환자들을 대상으로 말산출 관련 기능 개선을 목표로 치료적 노래부르기 중심의 음악중재를 시행하고, 각 사례 별로 변화를 관찰 기술한 사전-사후 개별 사례연구이다. 중재는 개별 세션의 형태로 매 회기 30분, 주 2회씩 총 12회기 동안 진행되었으며, 시행된 프로그램은 호흡근 이완을 위한 신체움직임, 조음기관의 운동범위 확장 및 성대이완을 위한 발성훈련과 치료적 노래부르기의 총 3단계로 구성되었다. 중재에 따른 대상자들의 말산출 관련 기능의 변화를 알아보기 위해 음성의 질, 길항반복운동속도(diadochokinesis, DDK), 모음공간면적(vowel space area, VSA) 변화 등의 음향학적 분석과 <산책>문단 읽기 과제 시의 청지각적 평가를 시행하였고, 프로그램 참여 시의 관찰 및 사전 사후 면담을 통해 대상자의 심리정서적 변화를 추가적으로 살펴보았다. 중재 과정에서 모든 대상자의 재활동기 및 음성 사용에 대한 긍정적 변화 양상이 관찰되었고, 중재 후에는 음성의 질, DDK에 변화가 있었으며, VSA의 확대가 나타났다. 본 연구를 통해 치료적 노래부르기 중심의 음악중재프로그램이 두경부암 환자들의 음성 기능 및 잔존하는 조음기관 운동성을 향상시키는데 긍정적인 영향을 미칠 수 있음을 알 수 있었다.

  • This study investigated the acoustical characteristics of phonatory offset-onset mechanisms. And this study shows the comparative results between non-stutterers (N=3) and a stutterer (N=1). Phonatory offset-onset means a laryngeal articulatory in the connected speech. In the phonetic context V_V), pattern 0(there is no changes) appeared in all subjects, and pattern 4(this indicate the trace of glottal fry and closure in spectrogram)was only in a Stutterer. In high vowels(/i/, /u/), pattern 3 and 4 appeared only in a stutterer. Although there is no common pattern among the non-stutterers, individual's preference pattern was founded. This study offers the key to an understanding of physiological movement on a block of stutter.

조음장애 환아에서 개별화된 치료계획 수립과 효과 판정을 위한 음향음성학적 분석방법의 활용 (Use of Acoustic Analysis for Indivisualised Therapeutic Planning and Assessment of Treatment Effect in the Dysarthric Children)

  • Speech evaluation and treatment planning for the patients with articulation disorders have traditionally been based on perceptual judgement by speech pathologists. Recently, various computerized speech analysis systems have been developed and commonly used in clinical settings to obtain the objective and quantitative data and specific treatment strategies. 10 dysarthric children (6 neurogenic and 4 functional dysarthria) participated in this experiment. Speech evaluation of dysarthria was performed in two ways; first, the acoustic analysis by Visi-Pitch and a Computerized Speech Lab and second, the perceptual scoring of phonetic errors rates in 100 word test. The results of the initial evaluation served as primary guidlines for the indivisualized treatment planning of each patient's speech problems. After mean treatment period of 5 months, the follow-up data of both dysarthric groups showed increased maximum phonation time, increased alternative motion rate and decreased occurrence of articulatory deviation. The changes of acoustic data and therapeutic effects were more prominent in children with dysarthria due to neurologic causes than with functional dysarthria. Three cases including their pre- and post treatment data were illustrated in detail.

경도 마비말장애 환자의 발화 유형에 따른 모음 특성 비교 (The change of vowel characteristics for the dysarthric speech along with speaking style)

  • The purpose of present study is to examine differences between habitual speech (HS) and clear speech (CS) in individuals with mild dysarthria. Twelve speakers with mild dysarthria and twelve healthy control speakers read sentences in two speaking styles. Formant and intensity related values, triangular area, and center of gravity of /a/, /i/, and /u/ were measured. In addition, formant-ratio variables such as vowel space area(VSA), vowel articulatory index (VAI), formant centralization ratio (FCR) and F2i/F1u ratio (F2 ratio) were calculated. The results of repeated-measures ANOVA showed a significant difference in F2 of vowel /i/ and F2 energy of vowel /a/ between groups. Regarding formant energy, F2 energy of vowel /a/ were observed as meaningful variables between speaking styles. There were significant speaking style-by-group interactions for F2 energy of vowel /a/. These findings indicated that current parameters could discriminate healthy group and mild dysarthria group meaningfully and that speaker with dysarthria had larger clear speech benefit than healthy talkers. We also claim that various acoustic changes of clear speech may contribute to improving vowel intelligibility.

미국인 아동이 발음한 영어모음의 포먼트 궤적 (Formant Trajectories of English Vowels Produced by American Children)

  • Many Korean children have difficulty learning English vowels. The gestures inside the oral and pharyngeal cavities are hard to control when they cannot see the gestures and the target vowel system is quite different from that of Korean. This study attempts to collect children's acoustic data of twelve English vowels published by Hillenbrand et al. (1995) online and to examine the acoustic features of English vowels for phoneticians and English teachers. The author used Praat to obtain the data systematically at six equidistant timepoints over the vowel segment avoiding any obvious errors. Results show inherent acoustic properties for vowels from the children's distribution of vowel duration, f0 and intensity values. Second, children's gestures for each vowel coincide with the regression analysis of all formant values at different timepoints regardless of the vocal fold and tract difference. Third, locus points appear higher than those of American males and females. Their gestures along the timepoints display almost similar patterns. From the results the author concludes that vowel formant trajectories provide useful and important information on dynamic articulatory gestures, which may be applicable to Korean children's education and correction of English vowels. Further studies on the developmental study of vowel formants and pitch values are desirable.

중국인 학습자의 한국어 발음에 대한 한국인 모어 화자의 청각 인지 반응 -중국인 학습자의 자음 발음을 중심으로- (Korean Native Speakers Auditory Cognitive Reactions to Chinese Korean-learners' Pronunciation: Centered on the utterance of consonants in the Korean Language)

  • This research has its basis with focus on the way Korean native speakers recognize Chinese Korean-learners' pronunciation. The objective of the study is to lay the cornerstone for establishing effective teaching-learning strategies for the education of the Korean phonetic system. In this study, the results of the experiment are presented which shows how native speakers of Korean identify Chinese Korean-learners' pronunciation of consonants. In the first place, stimulation tones were created from the original utterances of Chinese Korean-learners and seven scripts were made through the Pratt program. In addition, the subjects were asked to choose what the phonetic materials sounded like. The results of the research are represented as the ratio of frequency of Korean native speakers' response to each utterance to the total frequency. In addition, the paired t-test was taken in order to explore any relatedness to the changes in the level of proficiency of the Korean phonetic system, ranging from beginners to advanced learners. The outcome shows that the mistakes which Chinese Korean-learners make in pronouncing the consonants of Korean are relatively well-reflected in Korean native speakers' auditory cognitive reactions. To put it concretely, there is some difficulty in differentiating lax consonants from aspirates in the cases of plosives and affricates, but relatively little trouble with fortes. However, it is revealed that there is also a slight difference in relation to articulatory positions in detailed aspects. To provide an effective teaching method for the Korean phonetic system, it is essential to comprehend learners' phonetic mistakes through the precise analysis of data in terms of 'production.' Also, a more meticulous observation of 'phenomena' must be made through verification from the view of 'reception,' as attempted in this study. A more thorough diagnosis by applying methodology makes it possible to lay the foundation for developing effective teaching-learning strategies for the instruction of the Korean phonetic system. This study has its significance in making such attempts.

전기 Glottography(EGG)를 이용한 후두구음역학적 특성 (The Role of the Electroglottography on the Laryngeal Articulation of Speech)

  • There are two types of phonetic study, acoustic and physiologic, for differentiating the three manner categories of Korean stop consonants. On the physiologic studies, there are endoscopic, electromyographic(EMG), electroglottographic(EGG) and aerodynamic studies. In this study, I tried to investigate general features of Korean stops using EGG study for the open quotient of vocal fold and baseline shift during speech, and aerodynamic characteristics for e subglottal air pressure, air flow and glottal resistance at consonants. On the aerodynamic study, the glottalized and aspirated stops may be characterized by e increasing subglottal pressure comparing with lenis stop at consonants. The airflow is largest in the aspirated stops followed by lenis stops and glottalized. The glottal airway resistance (GAR) showed highest in the glottalized followed by the lenis, but lowest in e aspirated during e production of consonants, and showed highest in e aspirated, but low in the glottalized and lenis during the production of vowel. The glottal resistance at consonant showed significant difference among consonants and significant interaction between subject and types of consonant. The glottal resistance at vowel showed significant difference among consonants, and e interaction occured between subject and types of consonant. The electroglottography(EGG) has been used for investigating e functioning of e vocal folds during its vibration. The EGG should be related to the patterns of the vocal fold vibration during phonation in characterizing the temporal patterns of each vibratory cycle. The purpose of this study is to investigate the dynamic change of EGG waveforms during continuous speech. The dynamic changes of EGG waveforms fir the three-way distinction of Korean stops were characterized that the aspirated stop appears to be characterized by largest open quotient and smallest glottal contact area of the vocal folds in e initial portion of vocal fold vibration ; the lenis stop by moderate open quotient and glottal contact area ; but the glottalized stop by smallest open quotient and largest glottal contact area. There may be close relationship between the OQ(open quotient) in the initial voice onset and the glottal width at the time of consonant production, the larger glottal width just before vocal fold vibration results in the smaller OQ of the vocal fold vibration in the initial voice onset. The EGG changes of baseline shift during continuous speech production were characterized by the different patterns for the three types of Korean consonants. The small and less stiffness change of baseline shift was found for the lenis and the glottalized, and the largest and stiffest change was found for the aspirated. On the baseline shift for the initial voice onset, they showed so similar patterns with for the consonant production, larger changed in the aspirated. for the lenis and the glottalized during the initial voice onset, three subjects showed individual difference each other. I suggest at s characteristics were strongly related with articulatory activity of vocal tract for the production of consonant, especially for the aspirated stop. The suspecting factors to affect EGG waveforms are glottal width, vertical laryngeal movement and the intrapharyngeal pressure to neighboring tissue during connected spech. So the EGG may be an useful method to describe laryngeal activity to classify pulsing conditions of the larynx during speech production, and EGG research can be controls for monitoring the vocal tract articulation, although above factors to affect EGG would have played such a potentially role on vocal fold vibratory behavior obtained using consonant production.
