  • The dynamic stability of a robot vehicle can be enhanced by the Force-Angle Stability Margin concept that considers a variety of dynamic effects. To evaluate the robot vehicle stability, a SPI(stability performance index), which is a function of the suspension arm angles, was used. If the SPI has a minimum value, the robot vehicle has maximum stability. The FASM and SPI concepts were incorporated in the mobility simulation by using ADAMS and MATLAB/Simulink. The simulation results using these concepts showed significant improvements of the vehicle stability on rough terrains.

  • In this paper, we propose a suitable network topology for the Ethernet based Train Communication Network (TCN) for control system in a autonomous multi-articulated vehicle. We propose a network topology considering the structural constraints such as the number of cables and ports, and the performance constraints such as network response time and maximum throughput. We compare the network performances of star topology and daisy chain topology as well as hybrid topology, which is proposed in previous studies and a compromise between daisy chain and star topology. Here, the appropriate number of nodes in a group is obtained for the configuration of the hybrid topology. We first derive estimates of the network performance through simulation with different topologies, and then, implement the network by connecting the actual devices with each network topology. The performance of each topology is measured using various network performance measurement programs and the superiority of the proposed topology is described through comparison.

  • High-speed EMU under development vibrates more than a articulated high-speed train since power units are attached on each vehicle and railway vehicle. In this study, anisotropic equivalent stiffness of a aluminum extrusion plate were calculated to know and predict vibration characteristic of High-speed EMU under development. Eigen frequencies and modal shape of high speed train vehicle were calculated. And vibration generated was predicted at each position of vehicle when vehicle was operating.

  • All-wheel steering (AWS) system is applied to articulated vehicles to reduce turning radius. The swing-out suppression algorithm is applied to AWS ECU, a key component of AWS system. The swing-out suppression algorithm applied to AWS ECU has a problem when velocity of vehicle is changed. In this paper, new algorithm based on moving distance that solve velocity problem is proposed. The HILS simulation and the test articulated bus is used to validate algorithm.

  • Computer simulations are widely used to analyze passenger safety in traffic accidents. ATB(articulated total body) is a computer simulation model developed to predict gross human body response to such dynamic environments as vehicle crashes and pilot ejections. ATB, whose code is open, has high flexibility and application capability that users can easily insert defined modules and functions. ATB is, however, inconvenient as it was coded in FORTRAN and it needs a formatted input file. Moreover, it takes much time to make input files and to modify coding errors. This study aims to increase user friendliness by adding a preprocessor program, WINATB(WiNdow ATB), to the conventional ATB. WINATB programmed in Visual C++ and OpenGL uses ATB IV as a dynamic solver ...

  • Sensitivity analysis of suspension elements of an articulated bogie for light railway vehicles is presented. The ride, stability and safety are used as dynamic performance index. Suspension elements of 10 and a conicity of wheel are used as design variables, To analyze sensitivity of design variables, the railway vehicle dynamics analysis program AGEM is used. The results shows that the secondary suspension elements have a strong effect on ride and the primary suspension elements have a moderate effect on ride. Conicity of wheel has a strong effect on the stability, The safety is not effected by all the design variables.

  • light rail vehicle is modeled as a 2 d. o. f linear system for the design of vertical suspension characteristics and a 4 d. o. f. linear system for the design of lateral suspension characteristics. FRA's class-5-track irregularity is used for the exciting disturbance on track. Suspension stiffness and damping is selected on the basis of the ride quality and suspension stroke trade-off for the bogie of light rail vehicle. The optimum value of primary and secondary suspension characteristics is determined. And the stability of full vehicle model for the LRV is analyzed using the VAMPIRE program and critical speed is determined.

  • This paper is concerned with the robustness evaluations of the guidance controller for a bimodal tram which is being developed by the Korea Railroad Research Institute (KRRI). The bimodal tram is an all-wheel steered multiple-articulated vehicle as a new kind of transportation vehicle. This vehicle has to be equipped with an automatic guidance system. In [1], such a controller has been recently proposed. However, since the performance is affected by weight change of the vehicle due to number of the passenger, model parameter uncertainties depending on the state of friction and the elasticity of the tire, and a typhoon, the controller designed must be examined with these conditions. As expected, because the vehicle dynamics is highly nonlinear, for the sake of investigating the robustness of the controller we compose two simulation ways based on the vehicle models which are implemented by the ADAMS and the MATLAB/LabVIEW toolboxes. Different uncertainties and a typhoon disturbance have been considered for the simulation conditions. Simulation results are shown.

  • Real-Time Traversability should be analyzed from the equiped sensors' data in real time for autonomous outdoor navigation. However, it is difficult to find out such traversability that considers the terrain roughness and the vehicle dynamics especially in case of skid type vehicle. The traversability based on real time dynamic analysis was proposed to solve such problem but in navigation with strait driving path. To adapt the method into the navigation with curved driving path, a path following controller should be incorporated into the dynamic model even though it cause the real time problem. In this paper, a dynamic model is proposed to solve the real time problem in the traversability analysis based on real time dynamic simualtion. The dynamic model contains the control dummy which is connected to the vehicle body with a universal joint to follow the curved path without controller. Simulation and experimental results on $6{\times}6$ articulated unmanned ground vehicle demonstrate the method's effectiveness and applicability into the traversability analysis on terrain with bumps.

  • To improve ride quality and running stability of high speed train(HST), it is important that connection between coaches adopts the articulated bogies by using a gangway ring, unlike the conventional independent bogies assembled with car bodies. Although the gangway ring should be ensured absolute safety against passenger movement between coaches during train operation, there is still a lack of quantitative durability criteria of that. Therefore, in order to improve the passenger safety of HST, it is important to study the test requirements on durability evaluation for the ring. In this study, seven mixed loading cases were derived from the triaxial loading(vertical/lateral/longitudinal) modes. The safety factor of each component is at least 2.4 or more from the results of the finite element analysis. In addition, fatigue safety was evaluated through durability analysis from the viewpoint of strain-life design. Durability tests for the gangway ring carried out a total of 10 million cycles in 4 phases load conditions. After the durability test, the defect of each component was investigated using nondestructive testing techniques.
