  • As evidenced through rapidly growing digital repositories and web resources, automatic metadata generation is becoming ever more critical, especially considering the costly and complex operation of manual metadata creation. Also, automatic metadata generation is apt to consistent metadata application. In this sense, metadata quality and interoperability can be enhanced by utilizing a mechanism for automatic metadata generation. In this article, a mechanism of automatic metadata extraction called ExMETA is introduced in order to alleviate issues dealing with inconsistent metadata application and semantic interoperability across ever-growing digital collections. Conceptual graph, one of formal languages that represent the meanings of natural language sentences, is utilized for ExMETA as a mediation mechanism that enhances the metadata quality by disambiguating semantic ambiguities caused by isolation of a metadata element and its corresponding definition from the relevant context. Hence, automatic metadata generation by using ExMETA can be a good way of enhancing metadata quality and semantic interoperability.

  • As the rapid develoment of internet and information technology, the traditional library has been altered to the digital content service based on the world wide web. This paper proposes a design and implementation of an Artcle Union Catalog System(AUCS) based on metadata. The metadata set for the AUCS consists of twelve Dublin Core elements and one holdings element. The qualifiers of the proposed metadata elements are also represented. The AUCS system has an online cooperated cataloging system using the web interface or the 239.50 protocol, an union cataloging management system, and an integrated information retrieved system service. The integrated search and retrieval service of the AUCS displays not only the summary and detailed bibliographic information, but also the abstract, the table of contents, the digital content, and the copylfax service.

  • Most metadata quality measurement employ simple techniques by counting error records. This study presents a new quantitative measurement of metadata quality using advanced weighting schemes in order to overcome the limitations of exiting measurement techniques. Entropy, user tasks, and usage statistics were used to calculate the weights. Integrated weights were presented by combining these weights and were applied to actual journal article metadata. Entropy weights were found to reflect the characteristics of the data itself. User tasks presented the required metadata elements to solve user's information need. Integrated weights showed balanced measures without being affected by the influence of error elements, This finding indicates the new method being suitable for quantitative measurement of metadata quality.

  • It has lately been difficult to share the research outcomes information due to the information system not being compatible with one another. To solve this problem, it is believed that a meta data standard needs to be developed for all the institutions to follow. This paper shows how to make the research outcome of Science and Technology R&D project a standard metadata. We first classified all the research outcome into the following seven groups: Report, Journal article, Presentation material, Book, Dissertation, Industrial rights, and Technology development. We then identified three components that constitute a standard metadata. We employed the Dublin Core Metadata Set and CERIF(Common European Research Information Format) for worldwide interoperability. This Standard can be applied in the following areas: 1) Developing a standard architecture to manage research result within the organization. 2) Designing a conceptual/logical database to measure and evaluate the research outcome. 3) Developing a metadata system for research outcome as a subsystem of an Industrial Technology MDR (Metadata Registry) System.

  • RDF treats all resources independently, that's integrated description model for internet resources description, that provides the model to connect resources that related with the specific resources. This article performs theoretical review of RDF model and syntax specification and RDF schema specification that's a common rule of semanics, structure and syntax those provides search and access in the area of dispersed information environment of internet and Dublin Core that's description element for build metadata. And with this way it's materialized metadata design, schema, DTD of Dublin Core element for building RDF-based metadata that is XML application.

  • ISO 15489:2001 addresses the principles and requirements with which organizations, both public and private, should comply on the management of their records to ensure that adequate records are created, captured and managed. The standard defines the characteristics that a record should have through records management system as follows: authenticity, reliability, integrity, and usability. Authenticity means that records can be proven to be what it purports to be, to have been created or sent by the person purported to have created or sent it, and to have been created or sent at the time purported. Reliability means that the contents of the records can be trusted as a full and accurate representation of the transactions, activities or facts to which they attest and can be depended upon in the course of subsequent transactions or activities. Integrity refers to ensuring that a record is complete and unaltered. Usability means that records can be located, retrieved, presented and interpreted. In order to have these characteristics, a record should be persistently linked to the metadata necessary to document a transaction. Metadata is "data describing context, content and structure of records and their management through time." Metadata ensure the creation and maintenance of authentic, reliable and usable records and the protection of the integrity of those records. It could be implemented by creating and capturing records management metadata in systems that create and manage records. There have been some projects and standard initiatives to identify a core set of records management metadata. Included are the Australian Recordkeeping Metadata Standard and the British Metadata Standard which is part of the Requirements for Electronic Records Management System. Recently ISO/TS 23081-1 is published to implement metadata requirements within the framework of ISO 15489. Public records management system in Korea is ruled by the Act on the Management of Archives by Public Agencies and Administrative Records Management Regulation. This article evaluates records and their descriptive elements captured and maintained by the records management system in Korea on the basis of the international metadata standards.

  • In the library domain, the metadata concerning the journal and the articles published in the respective journal are the important attributes that can be used to search academic related information. In order to conduct this study, the American JATS standard and the XML DTDs of journal articles commonly used by well-known publishers were used. By comparing JATS standard to XML DTDs used by Elsevier and Springer, we were able to extract a total of 50 metadata elements(10 about the journals, 7 about the issues, 22 about the articles, and 11 about the authors). Additionally, we identified a total of 7 mandatory elements, 9 applicable mandatory elements, and 34 optional metadata elements. The implication of this study is that we selected metadata elements using XML DTDs that are used in the real world.

  • This article analyze a constructing process of photographic digital archive based on photographs of korean democratization movements. After photographic digital archive defines as integrated systems in which photographic digital objects collect, classify, describe, preserve and access, this article explains metadata elements and classification schema reflecting a special quality of photograph. Especially, this article presents dynamic classification structure using subject keywords. After all, this method provides integrity and interrelationship with photographes which promote usability of photographic digital objects.

  • Keeping the semantic interoperability between different formats is very important for reuseing and consistently processing metadata. This article is to design common schema and KORMARC schema based on RDF schema. For this, common elements are made by comparison of Dublin Core elements and KORMARC fields. The schema of these elements is designed for construction of semantic interoperability, basing RDF schema specification and syntax specification. Eventually, the semantic interoperability between a number of metadata formats can be constructed by matching the common elements to each attribute of format. KORMARC schema is designed by the application of common schema.

  • This study is to design a Semantic Navigation Retrieval System for Oriental Medicine Articles based on a XTM so that people can search and use them more effectively than before. Keywords extracted from articles are categorized 4 topics : herbs, prescription, disease, and action. Keywords analysis Ontology is modeled based on 4 topics and their relations, and then represented Topic maps. Next, Article analysis Ontology is consist of title, author, keywords, abstracts and organization Topics from metadata. Keywords and Article analysis Ontology were integrated through Keywords Topic. Korean Medical Article Retrieval System is optimistic in terms on search results supporting semantic navigation in the information service aspects and easier accessibility because all related information are semantically connected with each different DBs.
