The creative energy of the Korean women who pursued spiritual artistic practices under the limited situation of male-dominated confucian society in the Chosun Dynasty(AD 1392 - AD 1910) constituted the background for the development of Gubang Craft. Gubang Craft represented their artistic abilities, moral and family values, and the pursuit of self-esteem. Especially embroidery successfully showed four main elements of Gubang Craft such as embellishment, diversity, femininity, and craftsmanship. This paper is designed to explore how the traditional elements of embroidery works are restored and have influence on the modern Korean fiber art.
This study examines the process of Korea's acceptance of the concept of Art Craft through research on ancient remains and relices (朝鮮古蹟調査) and a series of projects undertaken by the Japanese Government-General of Korea, and the traditions and canons of craft established in the process. Crafts defined in law referred to fine and exquisite techniques for creating antiques, or genres of art such as painting or sculpture. The Yi Royal Family Museum and the Museum of the Japanese Government-General of Korea spearheaded the popularization of the term "Mi-sul-gong-ye (Art Craft, 美術工藝)." The artworks displayed in these two museums visually embodied past traditions. In general, the term "craft" was frequently used to refer to ancient art, and crafts specifically became traditions to be protected and conserved by designation as legal treasures for display in museums. The establishment of traditions and canons of craft exerted a great influence on crafts produced during this era. The cultural policies and imperial tastes of Japan played a crucial role in this process. In previous research, scholars divided the concept of craft in the modern era into two categories: industrial craft and art craft. However the so-called "art craft" is not a homogeneous category. It includes both ancient art (antiques) and the pieces made in modern age. Ancient art became canonized and the basis of contemporary production. Moreover, features of contemporary craft were diverse. By subdividing concepts of art and crafts, which have hitherto been discussed collectively, this study will serve as groundwork for accurately understanding "invented traditions" and features of modern craft.
Loewe Craft Prize is currently the most influential craft contest. During the contest, contemporary craftworks, as art with excellent aesthetic value, are selected as finalists but there are no enough studies on them as subjects. This study aimed to investigate contemporary textile pieces found in the fashion brand Loewe's Craft Prize, a Loewe Foundation Craft Prize and elucidate their expressive characteristics. The methodology of the study was a qualitative study that derives the expressive characteristics of the works within the scope of the study through case analysis along with theoretical reviews. The selection of research subjects was based on 22 works of textile pieces among the works selected as finalists for the last six years since the first year of the prize in 2016. The analysis of textile pieces showed first, the emphasis on traditional expression, second, the development of new expressive techniques for the material, and third, the pictorial character revealed in flat pieces. The expressive characteristics of contemporary textile art shown in the Loewe Foundation Craft Prize, derived based on such results were, first, the confirmation of the unique capabilities of craft through the inheritance of tradition, second, the rediscovery of textile properties through material experimentation, and third, the possibility of expanding the field of textile due to the pictorial character.

Through this, we aim to find a way to reduce depression and improve the quality of life in stroke clients. Methods: Clients diagnosed with stroke were selected as participants for the study. Participants in the experimental group (n=13) and control group (n=14) received general occupational therapy. Clients in the experimental group participated in client-centered art and craft activities, whereas clients in the control group participated in general art and craft activities for 8 weeks. Beck Depression Inventory(BDI) and Stroke Specific Quality of Life(SS-QOL) were used to evaluate the depression and quality of life of the clients before and after the intervention. Results: The experimental group and control group presented significant statistical difference in depression before and after intervention (p<.01; p<.05). The experimental group showed a greater decrease in depression (p<.05) than the control group. Additionally, the experimental and control group displayed significant statistical difference in quality of life (p<.01) before and after intervention. The experimental group showed a more statistically significant improvement in quality of life (p<.01) than the control group. Conclusion: These results demonstrate the significance of client-centered art and craft activities in reducing depression and improving quality of life in clients with stroke. This study examines the processes and characteristics of modern Korean embroidery art from the beginning of Korean modern times to 1945 which was the year of independence from Japan. An objective basis is presented by the analysis of articles and illustrations from the press and publications of the corresponding times. The significance of this study is to research the modern Korean embroidery art, which connected traditional times with modern Korean culture in order to investigate its identity. Due to Korea's modern embroidery art being started in the Japanese colonial times, there are some limits in it because of it being influenced by Western modern embroidery art and Japanese embroidery design. However, modern Korean embroidery art expanded from the private space to public space such as schools, open lectures and exhibitions. It has also accepted diverse foreign embroidery forms, which have been commercialized and accepted as art. The embroidery craft as commerce and art has given women the chance to achieve economic independence and to improve their social status. Modern Korean embroidery was art for the modern woman who had been educated in academic art, as well as a liberal art for wealthy housewives. It was the foundation of economic independence for poor rural women. It can be concluded that Modern Korean embroidery art has been accepted and developed by women in modern times.
From the middle of 1970s were founded new basis for the development of craft through the co-operation of the civilians and the authorities. First, Korean Culture and Art Foundation founded in 1973 held the 'Invitation Exhibition for the Craft Artists All over the Country' in 1974 and 1975 and The National Museum of Modern Art held the 'Exhibition of Modern Korean Handicraft Art' in 1975. Second, the policy emphasizing the export and tourism provided the basis for the development of design for export goods and souvenirs of tour. H\therefore the exhibitions of such goods were held by many organizations. ] In 1970s departments of craft and design were newly established in the universities so that the third generation of Korean craft was on the rise and their groups began to hold exhibitions in commercial galleries. Reflecting on such circumstances, 1970s was the period of blossom for Korean craft while 1960s was a sprouting season.
