Systematic studies are performed for arsenic adsorption on synthesized lepidocrocite. The synthesized lepidocrocite with high surface area of $94.8\;g/m^2$ has shown that the point of zero charge(PZC) is 6.57 determined by potentiometric titration, suggestive of high capacity of arsenic removal. Results show that arsenite[As(III)] uptake by synthesized lepidocrocite is greater than that of arsenate[As(V)] at pH $2{\sim}12$, indicating that the lepidocrocite has high affinity toward arsenite rather than arsenate. Adsorption of arsenate decreases with increasing pH from 2 to 12, whereas arsenite sorption increases until pH 8.0, and then decreases dramatically with increasing pH, suggesting that changes in surface charge of the lepidocrocite as a function of pH playa important role in aresinc uptake by the lepidocrocite. Upon kinetic experiments, our results demonstrate that both arsenite and arsenate sorption on the lepidocrocite increases rapidly for the first 4 h followed by little changes during the duration of the experiment, showing that adsorption plays a key role in aresenic uptake by the lepidocrocite. Our results also show that power function and elovich models are the best fit for the adsorption kinetics of arsenite and aesenate on the lepidocrocite.

Removal efficiency of As(III) through oxidation and adsorption in column reactors was investigated at different ratios of manganese-coated sand(MCS) and iron-coated sand(ICS) : MCS-alone, ICS-alone and both of ICS and MCS. The breakthrough of arsenic immediately occurred from a column reactor with MCS-alone. However, most of the arsenic present in the effluent was identified as As(V) due to the oxidation of As(III) by MCS. While five-times delayed breakthrough of arsenic was observed from a column reactor with ICS-alone. At a complete breakthrough of arsenic, the removed As(III) was 36.1 mg with 1 kg ICS. To find an optimum ratio of ICS and MCS in the column packed with both ICS and MCS, the removal efficiency of As(III) was investigated at three different ratios of ICS/MCS with a fixed amount of ICS. The breakthrough time of arsenic was quite similar in the different ratios ICS/MCS. However, much slower breakthrough of arsenic was observed as the ratio of ICS/MCS decreased. As the ratio of ICS/MCS decreased the concentration of As(III) in the effluent decreased and then showed below 50 ppb at an equal amount of ICS and MCS, suggesting more efficient oxidation of As(III) by greater amount of MCS. When a complete breakthrough of arsenic occurred, the removed total arsenic with an equal amount of ICS and MCS was 68.5 mg with 1 kg of filter material.

Removal efficiency of As(III) was investigated with a pilot-scale filtration system packed with an equal amount(each 21.5 kg) of manganese-coated sand(MCS) in the bottom and iron-coated sand(ICS) in the top. Height and diameter of the used column was 200 cm and 15 cm, respectively. The As(III) solution was introduced into the bottom of the filtration system with a peristaltic pump at a speed of $5{\times}10^{-3}$ cm/s over 148 days. Breakthrough of total arsenic in the mid-sampling position(end of the MCS bed) and final-sampling position(end of the ICS bed) was started after 18 and 44 days, respectively, and then showed a complete breakthrough after 148 days. Although the breakthrough of total arsenic in the mid-sampling position was started after 18 days, the concentration of As(III) in this effluent was below 50 ppb up to 61 days. This result indicates that MCS has a sufficient oxidizing capacity to As(III) and can oxidize 92 mg of As(III) with 1 kg of MCS up to 61 days. When a complete breakthrough of total arsenic occurred, the removed total arsenic by MCS was calculated as 79.0 mg with 1 kg MCS. As variation of head loss is small at each sampling position over the entire reaction time, it was possible to operate the filtration system with ICS and MCS for a long time without a significant head loss.

In this study, iron and manganese coated sand (IMCS) was prepared by mixing Joomoonjin sand with solutions having different molar ratio of manganese ($Mn^{2+}$) and iron ($Fe^{3+}$). Mineral type of IMCS was analyzed by X-ray diffraction spectroscopy. Removal efficiency of arsenic through As(III) oxidation and As(V) adsorption by IMCS having different ratio of Mn/Fe was evaluated. The coated amount of total Mn and Fe on all IMCS samples was less than that on sand coated with iron-oxide alone (ICS) or manganese-oxide alone (MCS). The mineral type of the manganese oxide on MCS and iron oxides on ICS were identified as ${\gamma}-MnO_2$ and mixture of goethite and magnetite, respectively. The same mineral type was appeared on IMCS. Removed amount As(V) by IMCS was greatly affected by the content of Fe rather than by the content of Mn. Adsorption of As(V) by IMCS was little affected by the presence of monovalent and divalent electrolytes. However a greatly reduced As(V) adsorption as observed in the presence of trivalent electrolyte such as $PO_4\;^{3-}$. As(III) oxidation efficiency by MCS in the presence of NaCl or $NaNO_3$ was two times greater than that in the presence of $PO_4\;^{3-}$. Meanwhile a greater As(III) oxidation efficiency was observed by IMCS in the presence of $PO_4\;^{3-}$. This was explained by the competitive adsorption between phosphate and arsenate on the surface of IMCS.

Iron-coated sand(ICS) was prepared with variation of particle size of Joomoonjin sand, primary and secondary coating temperature, coating time, and dosage of initial Fe(III). An optimum condition of the preparation ICS was selected from the coating efficiency, stability of coated Fe(III), and removal efficiency of As(V). Coated amount of Fe(III) increased as primary coating temperature increased with smaller particle size of sand. Coating efficiency was quite similar over the investigated secondary coating temperature and time, while adsorption efficiency of As(V) onto ICS was severely reduced with ICS prepared at higher secondary coating temperature. By considering these results, an optimum secondary coating temperature and time for the preparation of ICS was selected as $150^{\circ}C$ and 1-hr, respectively. Coating efficiency increased us the dosage of initial Fe(III) up to 0.8 Fe(III) mol/kg sand and then no distinct increase was noted. Maximum As(V) adsorption was observed at 0.8 Fe(III) mol/kg sand. Secondary coating temperature and time were important parameters affecting stability of ICS, showing decreased dissolution of Fe(III) from ICS prepared at higher coating temperature and at longer coating time. From anionic type adsorption of As(V) onto ICS, it is possible to suggest the application of ICS for the removal of As(V) contaminated in acidic water system.
The effects of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) of Pseudomonas aeruginosa on adsorption and redox state alteration of dissolved As, Cr and U were investigated through batch experiments. Surfaces of bacterial cells were either vigorously washed or unwashed. Solutions of As(V), Cr(VI) and U(VI) were inoculated with the bacterial cells under no nutrient condition, and total aqueous concentrations and redox state alteration were monitored over time. No As adsorption occurred onto bacteria or EPS; however, unwashed bacteria reduced about 60% As(V) to As(III). Unwashed bacteria also led to removal of 45% total dissolved Cr and reduction of 64% Cr(VI). About 80% U(VI) was removed from solution with unwashed bacteria as well. Such electrochemical reduction of the elements was likely due to reducing capacity of EPS itself or detoxifying reduction of the bacteria which kept their viability under protection of EPS. The results indicated that bacterial biofilm may significantly control the redox state and subsequent mobility of As, Cr and U in natural geologic settings.

Special concern has been given to the elevated arsenic content in soils because of its high mobility and toxicity. Layered double hydroxide (LDH) which has a high anionic exchange capacity is another potential anion adsorbent for toxic anions such as arsenic, chromate and selenium etc. The uptake of arsenate from aqueous solutions by the calcined Mg-Al LDH has been investigated. The sorption capacity was about 530 mmol/kg. Sorption isotherm was defined as L-type in which arsenate was removed by LDH through anion uptake reaction. Arsenate sorption by the calcined Mg-Al LDH was occurred by reconstruction of LDH's framework. Competitive adsorption revealed that Mg-Al LDH had higher selectivity for arsenate than for sulfate. These results strongly suggest that calcined Mg-Al LDH has a promising potential for efficient removal of toxic metal oxides like arsenates from aqueous environments.

Laboratory-scale experiments were performed to identify the As removal mechanism of the residual slag generated after the mineral carbonation process. The residual slags were manufactured from the steelmaking slag (blast oxygen furnace slag: BOF) through direct and indirect carbonation process. RDBOF (residual BOF after the direct carbonation) and RIBOF (residual BOF after the indirect carbonation) showed different physicochemical-structural characteristics compared with raw BOF such as chemical-mineralogical properties, the pH level of leachate and forming micropores on the surface of the slag. In batch experiment, 0.1 g of residual slag was added to 10 mL of As-solution (initial concentration: 203.6 mg/L) titrated at various pH levels. The RDBOF showed 99.3% of As removal efficiency at initial pH 1, while it sharply decreased with the increase of initial pH. As the initial pH of solution decreased, the dissolution of carbonate minerals covering the surface was accelerated, increasing the exposed area of Fe-oxide and promoting the adsorption of As-oxyanions on the RDBOF surface. Whereas, the As removal efficiency of RIBOF increased with the increase of initial pH levels, and it reached up to 70% at initial pH 10. Considering the PZC (point of zero charge) of the RIBOF (pH 4.5), it was hardly expected that the electrical adsorption of As-oxyanion on surface of the RIBOF at initial pH of 4-10. Nevertheless it was observed that As-oxyanion was linked to the Fe-oxide on the RIBOF surface by the cation bridge effect of divalent cations such as Ca2+, Mn2+, and Fe2+. The surface of RIBOF became stronger negatively charged, the cation bridge effect was more strictly enforced, and more As can be fixed on the RIBOF surface. However, the Ca-products start to precipitate on the surface at pH 10-11 or higher and they even prevent the surface adsorption of As-oxyanion by Fe-oxide. The TCLP test was performed to evaluate the stability of As fixed on the surface of the residual slag after the batch experiment. Results supported that RDBOF and RIBOF firmly fixed As over the wide pH levels, by considering their As desorption rate of less than 2%. From the results of this study, it was proved that both residual slags can be used as an eco-friendly and low-cost As remover with high As removal efficiency and high stability and they also overcome the pH increase in solution, which is the disadvantage of existing steelmaking slag as an As remover.
Mn-impregnated activated carbon (Mn-AC) prepared at different conditions was applied in the treatment of synthetic wastewater containing both organic and inorganic contaminants. Phenol and As(III) was used as the representative organic and inorganic contaminants, respectively. After evaluation of the physicochemical characteristic and stability of Mn-AC, oxidation of As(III) as well as adsorption of phenol by activated carbon(AC) and Mn-AC were investigated in a batch reactor. To investigate the stability of Mn-AC, dissolution of Mn from each Mn-AC was measured pH ranging from 2 to 4. Although Mn-AC was unstable at a strong acidic condition, the dissoluted Mn was below 3 ppm at pH 4. XRD analysis of Mn-AC indicated that the mineral type of the impregnated manganese was $Mn_2O_3$. From the simultaneous treatment of As(III) and phenol by AC and Mn-AC, As(III) oxidation by Mn-AC was greater than that by AC at lower pH, while the reverse order was observed at higher pH. After impregnation of Mn onto AC, 13% decrease of the surface area was observed, causing 8% reduction of phenol removal. Considering removal properties of As(III) and phenol, Mn-AC could be applied in the simultaneous treatment of wastewater contaminated with multi-contaminants.
In this study, iron nanoparticles impregnated hydrochar (FeNPs@HC) was synthesized using lignocellulosic waste and simple one-pot synthetic method. During hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) process, the mixture of lignocellulosic waste and ferric nitrate (0.1~0.5 M) as a precursor of iron nanoparticles was added and heated to 220℃ for 3 h in a teflon sealed autoclave, followed by calcination at 600℃ in N2 atmosphere for 1 h. For the characterization of the as-prepared materials, X-ray diffraction (XRD), cation exchange capacity (CEC), fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), transmission electron microscope (TEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) were used. The change of Fe(III) concentration in the feedstock influenced characteristics of produced FeNPs@HC and removal efficiency towards As(V) and Pb(II). According to the Langmuir isotherm test, maximum As(V) and Pb(II) adsorption capacity of Fe0.25NPs@HC were found to be 11.81 and 116.28 mg/g respectively. The results of this study suggest that FeNPs@HC can be potentially used as an adsorbent or soil amendment for remediation of groundwater or soil contaminated with arsenic and cation heavy metals.
