The scope of this work is to determine and compare the effect of electron temperature ($T_e$) and number density ($N_e$) on the yield rate and concentration of reactive chemical species ($^{\bullet}OH$, $H_2O_2$ and $O_3$) in an argon, air and oxygen injected negative DC (0-4 kV) capillary discharge with water flow(0.1 L/min). The discharge was created between tungsten pin-to pin electrodes (${\Phi}=0.5mm$) separated by a variable distance (1-2 mm) in a quartz capillary tube (2 mm inner diameter, 4 mm outer diameter), with various gas injection rates (100-800 sccm). Optical emission spectroscopy (OES) of the hydrogen Balmer lines was carried out to investigate the line shapes and intensities as functions of the discharge parameters such as the type of gas, gas injection rate and inter electrode gap distances. The intensity ratio method was used to calculate $T_e$ and Stark broadening of Balmer ${\beta}$ lines was adopted to determine $N_e$. The effects of $T_e$ and $N_e$ on the reactive chemical species formation were evaluated and presented. The enhancement in yield rate of reactive chemical species was revealed at the higher electron temperature, higher gas injection rates, higher discharge power and larger inter-electrode gap. The discharge with oxygen injection was the most effective one for increasing the reactive chemical species concentration. The formation of reactive chemical species was shown more directly related to $T_e$ than $N_e$ in a flowing water gas injected negative DC capillary discharge.

This paper examined the conversion of methane to hydrogen and other higher hydrocarbons using dielectric barrier discharge with AC pulse power. Two metal electrodes of a coaxial-type plasma reactor were separated by gas gap and an alumina tube. The inner electrode was located inside the alumina tube. The alumina tube was located inside the stainless steel tube, which was used as the outer electrode. Effect of feed gas composition (methane, oxygen, argon, water and helium), flow rate, applied frequency, input volt-age on methane conversion and product distribution were studied. The major products of plasma chemical reactions were ethylene, ethane, propane, buthane, hydrogen, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. The increment of applied voltage and the usage of inert gas as the background (helium and argon) enhanced the selectivity of hydrocarbons and methane conversion. The addition of water in the feed stream enhanced the conversion of methane and yield of hydrogen. Higher voltage leads to higher yield of $C_2H_6,\;C_3H_8,\;C_4H_{10}$ and yield or $C_2H_2\;and\;C_2H_4$ appeared highly in lower voltage.

We have generated the needle-typed nonthermal plasma jet by using an Ar gas flow at atmospheric pressure. Diagnostics of electron temperature anddensity is critical factors in optimization of the atmospheric plasma jet source in accordance with the gas flow rate. We have investigated the electron temperature and density of plasma jet by selecting the four metastable Ar emission lines based on the atmospheric collisional radiative model and radial profile characteristics of current density, respectively. The averaged electron temperature and electron density for this plasma jet are found to be ~1.6 eV and ~$3.2{\times}10^{12}cm^{-3}$, respectively, in this experiment. The densities of OH radical species inside the various bio-solutions are found to be higher by about 4~9 times than those on the surface when the argon bioplasma jet has been bombarded onto the bio-solution surface. The densities of the OH radicalspecies inside the DI water, DMEM, and PBS are measured to be about $4.3{\times}10^{16}cm^{-3}$, $2.2{\times}10^{16}cm^{-3}$, and $2.1{\times}10^{16}cm^{-3}$, respectively, at 2 mm downstream from the surface under optimized Ar gas flow 250 sccm.
This study carried out a laboratory scale plasma reactor about the characteristics of chemically oxidative species (${\cdot}OH$, $H_2O_2$ and $O_3$) produced in dielectric barrier discharge plasma. It was studied the influence of various parameters such as gas type, $1^{st}$ voltage, oxygen flow rate, electric conductivity and pH of solution for the generation of the oxidant. $H_2O_2$ and $O_3$.) $H_2O_2$ and $O_3$ was measured by direct assay using absorption spectrophotometry. OH radical was measured indirectly by measuring the degradation of the RNO (N-Dimethyl-4-nitrosoaniline, indicator of the generation of OH radical). The experimental results showed that the effect of influent gases on RNO degradation was ranked in the following order: oxygen > air >> argon. The optimum $1^{st}$ voltage for RNO degradation were 90 V. As the increased of $1^{st}$ voltage, generated $H_2O_2$ and $O_3$ concentration were increased. The intensity of the UV light emitted from oxygen-plasma discharge was lower than that of the sun light. The generated hydrogen peroxide concentration and ozone concentration was not high. Therefore it is suggested that the main mechanism of oxidation of the oxygen-plasma process is OH radical. The conductivity of the solution did not affected the generation of oxidative species. The higher pH, the lower $H_2O_2$ and $O_3$ generation were observed. However, RNO degradation was not varied with the change of the solution pH.

Silver paste is a valuable electrode material for electronic device applications because it is easy to handle with relatively low heat treatment. This study treated the electrode surface using an atmospheric-pressure plasma jet on the silver-paste electrode. This plasma jet was generated in an argon atmosphere using a high voltage of 5.5 to 6.5 kV with an operating frequency of 11.5 kHz. Plasma-jet may be more beneficial to the printing process by performing it at atmospheric pressure. The electrode surface becomes hydrophilic quickly and contact angle variation is observed on the electrode surface as a function of plasma treatment time, applied voltage, and gas flow rate. Also, there was no deviation in the contact angle after the plasma treatment in the large-area sample, that means a uniform result could be obtained regardless of the substrate size. The outcomes of this study are expected to be very useful in forming a stacked structure in the manufacture of large-area electronic devices and future applications.
Surface modification of PTFE by ion irradiation was performed to improve its surface properties, In the case where argon was used to irradiate the PTFE films, an increase in the adhesion strength was observed when the ion fluence was over $1\times10^{15}\;ions/cm^2$, but the surface morphology dramatically changed to a needle-shaped one. However, when we used hydrogen ions under $O_2$ environmental gas, the adhesion strength increased at an ion fluence of $5\times10^{16}\;ions/cm^2$ and the surface morphology by the hydrogen irradiation was not needle-shaped. The surface morphology and adhesion strength of the hydrogen modified PTFE was influenced by the oxygen flow rate. It was confirmed by reflectance measurements that the surface properties of the hydrogen ion irradiated PTFE were superior to those of the argon ion irradiated PTFE.

Many researchers are interested in the synthesis and characterization of carbon nitride and diamond-like carbon (DLq because they show excellent mechanical properties such as low friction and high wear resistance and excellent electrical properties such as controllable electical resistivity and good field electron emission. We have deposited amorphous carbon nitride (a-C:N) thin films and DLC thin films by shielded arc ion plating (SAIP) and evaluated the structural and tribological properties. The application of appropriate negative bias on substrates is effective to increase the film hardness and wear resistance. This paper reports on the deposition and tribological OLC films in relation to the substrate bias voltage (Vs). films are compared with those of the OLC films. A high purity sintered graphite target was mounted on a cathode as a carbon source. Nitrogen or argon was introduced into a deposition chamber through each mass flow controller. After the initiation of an arc plasma at 60 A and 1 Pa, the target surface was heated and evaporated by the plasma. Carbon atoms and clusters evaporated from the target were ionized partially and reacted with activated nitrogen species, and a carbon nitride film was deposited onto a Si (100) substrate when we used nitrogen as a reactant gas. The surface of the growing film also reacted with activated nitrogen species. Carbon macropartic1es (0.1 -100 maicro-m) evaporated from the target at the same time were not ionized and did not react fully with nitrogen species. These macroparticles interfered with the formation of the carbon nitride film. Therefore we set a shielding plate made of stainless steel between the target and the substrate to trap the macropartic1es. This shielding method is very effective to prepare smooth a-CN films. We, therefore, call this method "shielded arc ion plating (SAIP)". For the deposition of DLC films we used argon instead of nitrogen. Films of about 150 nm in thickness were deposited onto Si substrates. Their structures, chemical compositions and chemical bonding states were analyzed by using X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy. Hardness of the films was measured with a nanointender interfaced with an atomic force microscope (AFM). A Berkovich-type diamond tip whose radius was less than 100 nm was used for the measurement. A force-displacement curve of each film was measured at a peak load force of 250 maicro-N. Load, hold and unload times for each indentation were 2.5, 0 and 2.5 s, respectively. Hardness of each film was determined from five force-displacement curves. Wear resistance of the films was analyzed as follows. First, each film surface was scanned with the diamond tip at a constant load force of 20 maicro-N. The tip scanning was repeated 30 times in a 1 urn-square region with 512 lines at a scanning rate of 2 um/ s. After this tip-scanning, the film surface was observed in the AFM mode at a constant force of 5 maicro-N with the same Berkovich-type tip. The hardness of a-CN films was less dependent on Vs. The hardness of the film deposited at Vs=O V in a nitrogen plasma was about 10 GPa and almost similar to that of Si. It slightly increased to 12 - 15 GPa when a bias voltage of -100 - -500 V was applied to the substrate with showing its maximum at Vs=-300 V. The film deposited at Vs=O V was least wear resistant which was consistent with its lowest hardness. The biased films became more wear resistant. Particularly the film deposited at Vs=-300 V showed remarkable wear resistance. Its wear depth was too shallow to be measured with AFM. On the other hand, the DLC film, deposited at Vs=-l00 V in an argon plasma, whose hardness was 35 GPa was obviously worn under the same wear test conditions. The a-C:N films show higher wear resistance than DLC films and are useful for wear resistant coatings on various mechanical and electronic parts.nic parts.
The inner-diameter 5 cm cold hollow cathode ion source was designed for the high current density and the homogeneous beam profile of ion beam. The ion source consisted of a cylindrical cathode, a generation part of magnetic field, a plasma chamber, convex type ion optic system with two grid electrode, and DC power supply system. The cold hollow cathode ion sources were classified into standard type (I), electron output electrode modified type (II). The operation of the ion source was done with discharge current, ion beam potential and argon gas flow rate. The modification of electron output electrode resulted in uniform plasma generation and uniform area of ion beam was extended from 5 cm to 20 cm. Improved ion source was evaluated with beam uniformity, ion current, team extraction efficiency, and ionization efficiency.

A thinner film has superior electrical properties and a better amorphous structure. Amorphous structures can be effective in improving conductivity through a depletion effect. Research is needed on the Schottky contact, where potential barriers are formed, as a way to identify these characteristics. $SiO_2/SnO_2$ thin films were prepared to examine the amorphous structure and Schottky contact, $SiO_2$ thin films were prepared using Ar = 20 sccm. $SnO_2$ thin films were deposited using mixed gas with a flow rate of argon and oxygen at 20 sccm, and $SnO_2$ thin films were added by magnetron sputtering and treated at $100^{\circ}C$ and $150^{\circ}C$. To identify the conditions under which the amorphous structure was constructed, the XRD patterns were investigated and C-V and I-V measurements were taken to make Al electrodes and perform electrical analysis. The depletion layer was formed by the recombination of electrons and holes through the heat treatment process. $SiO_2/SnO_2$ thin films confirmed that the pores were well formed when heat treated at $100^{\circ}C$ and an electric current was applied over the micro area. An amorphous $SiO_2/SnO_2$ thin film with heat treatment at $100^{\circ}C$ showed no reflection at $33^{\circ}\;2{\theta}$ in the XRD pattern, and a reflection at $44^{\circ}2\;{\theta}$. Purpose : For the research of Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT), fast neutrons generated from the MC-50 cyclotron with maximum energy of 34.4 MeV in Korea Cancer Center Hospital were moderated by 70 cm paraffin and then the dose characteristics were investigated. Using these results, we hope to establish the protocol about dose measurement of epi-thermal neutron, to make a basis of dose characteristic of epi-thermal neutron emitted from nuclear reactor, and to find feasibility about accelerator-based BNCT. Method and Materials : For measuring the absorbed dose and dose distribution of fast neutron beams, we used Unidos 10005 (PTW, Germany) electrometer and IC-17 (Far West, USA), IC-18, ElC-1 ion chambers manufactured by A-150 plastic and used IC-l7M ion chamber manufactured by magnesium for gamma dose. There chambers were flushed with tissue equivalent gas and argon gas and then the flow rate was S co per minute. Using Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP) code, transport program in mixed field with neutron, photon, electron, two dimensional dose and energy fluence distribution was calculated and there results were compared with measured results. Results : The absorbed dose of fast neutron beams was $6.47\times10^{-3}$ cGy per 1 MU at the 4 cm depth of the water phantom, which is assumed to be effective depth for BNCT. The magnitude of gamma contamination intermingled with fast neutron beams was $65.2{\pm}0.9\%$ at the same depth. In the dose distribution according to the depth of water, the neutron dose decreased linearly and the gamma dose decreased exponentially as the depth was deepened. The factor expressed energy level, $D_{20}/D_{10}$, of the total dose was 0.718. Conclusion : Through the direct measurement using the two ion chambers, which is made different wall materials, and computer calculation of isodose distribution using MCNP simulation method, we have found the dose characteristics of low fluence fast neutron beams. If the power supply and the target material, which generate high voltage and current, will be developed and gamma contamination was reduced by lead or bismuth, we think, it may be possible to accelerator-based BNCT.
