  • Organic light-emitting diode (OLED) research field has received great attention from academic and industrial circles. Recently, The technical feature of OLEDs is more and more attractive in the lighting market, including area emission characteristics different from other existing light sources. Features are environmentally friendly and efficient use of energy, large area, ultra-light weight, and ultrathin shape, etc. Furthermore, OLED light became the mainstream of next-generation lighting to replace the light emitting diode (LED) fluorescent light. This article summarizes phosphorescent emitting materials that have been applied to white OLEDs. In particular, the chemical structures and device performances of the important yellow, orange, and red phosphorescent emitting materials is discussed. Systematic classification and understanding of the phosphorescent materials can aid the development of new light-emitting materials.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effect of light quality on evapotranspiration and graft-taking characteristics of watermelon grafted seedlings using blue, red and far-red light-emitting diodes (LED). At initial stage of graft-taking, blue light increased the evapotranspiration rate (EVTR) of grafted seedlings as compared to effects of red and far-red on EVTR of grafted seedlings. Grafted seedlings graft-taken under red and blue LED showed the high graft-taking of 100% and 96%, respectively. However, grafted seedlings graft-taken under far-red LED showed the graft-taking of 80% and survival of 60% with low seedlings quality after hardening. The stem of grafted seedlings graft-taken under red light was elongated but blue light suppressed the stem elongation. The leaf area of grafted seedlings graft-taken under red light was increased. It is concluded that the effect of light quality using LED on graft-taking of watermelon grafted seedlings was significantly recognized. Considering the duration of quality of grafted seedlings graft-taken under artificial lighting, LED could be used as an effective lighting sources to validate the continuance of seedling quality.

  • In the indirect optical bio-telemetry, high frequency response and low minimum detectable optical power can be achieved by using photodiode with small light receiving area which minimizes junction capacitance. But, on the other hand, S/N ratio becomes low because the optical signal current is small. To solve such a problem, we attach plato-convex lens in front of photo diode, The results of comput- er simulation and experiments suggest promotion of light receiving efficiency and possibility of multi- telemetry system through directivity of convex lens in one room.

  • This study characterized the spatial and seasonal patterns of light pollution in the Deogyusan National Park and examined the potential effects of light pollution on ecosystems in the park using light intensities derived from VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) DNB (Day and Night Band) nightlight images collected in January and August 2018. Results showed that the Muju Deogyusan resort had the greatest light intensity than other sources of light pollution in the park, and light intensity of the resort was much higher in January than in August, suggesting that artificial lights in ski slopes and facilities were the major source of light pollution in the park. An analysis of an urban-natural light pollution gradient along a neighboring urban area through the inside of the park indicated that light radiated from a light pollution source permeated for up to 1km into the adjacent area and contaminated the edge area of the park. Of the legally protected species whose distributions were reported in literature, four mammals (Martes flavigula, Mustela nivalis, Prionailurus bengalensis, Pteromys volans aluco), two birds (Falco subbuteo, Falco tinnunculus), and nine amphibians and reptiles (Onychodactylus koreanus, Hynobius leechii, Karsenia koreana, Rana dybowskii, Rana huanrenensis, Elaphe dione, Rhabdophis tigrinus, Gloydius ussuriensis, Gloydius saxatilis) inhabited light-polluted areas. Of those species inhabiting light-polluted areas, nocturnal species, such as Prionailurus bengalensis and Pteromys volans aluco, in particular, were vulnerable to light pollution. These results implied that protecting ecosystems from light pollution in national parks requires managing nighttime light in the parks and surrounding areas and making a plan to manage nighttime light pollution by taking into account ecological characteristics of wild animals in the parks.

  • To protect air pollution of urban area from motor vehicles, emission limits for diesel vehicles have been dramatically lowered in short period. But recent studies have shown that on-road NOx emissions of light-duty diesel vehicles are considerably higher than the values measured with laboratory test procedures used for emission certification. To tackle with this issue, Ministry of Environment have a plan to introduce EU RDE-LDV (Real-driving Emission-Light-duty Vehicle) regulation. In this study, 4 Euro 6 diesel vehicles have been tested with the new test procedures published by EU to estimate on-road NOx emissions using PEMS (Portable Emission Measurement System). The results have shown that the requirements of EU RDE-LDV could be met in driving condition of metropolitan area for constitution of test routes and validity of test results. In analysing with Moving Averaging Window method the completeness and normality of test data were validated with the requirement. On-road NOx emissions were quite deviated as test vehicles and higher than the new limit of on-road NOx emission enforced from Sept. 2017, which means that RDE-LDV can effectively reduce NOx emission of diesel vehicles in real driving conditions of Korea.

  • As an alternative energy, Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have received much attention due to low cost manufacturing procedure and high energy consumption rate. Incorporating scattering centers in the nanocrystalline photoanode or additional scattering layers on the nanocrystalline photoanode is an effective way to enhance the light harvest efficiency of the photoanode and the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The light scattering abilities of these scattering layers also depend on the relative sizes and phase of the particles in the layers. A higher surface area is normally obtained using large particle sizes. Therefore, transparent high surface area $TiO_2$ layers and an additional scattering layer consisting of $TiO_2$-Rutile 500 nm paste with relatively larger particles are attractive. In this work, we investigates the applicability of a hybrid $TiO_2$ electrode (or a working electrode with a light scattering layer) in a DSSCs. We fabrication various thin film using $TiO_2$ paste 20 nm and $TiO_2$ paste 500 nm. As a result, the efficiency of the a single structure thin film was 3.35% and the efficiency as scattering layer of hybrid structure thin film was 4.36%, 4.73%.

  • Automatic vehicle detection is a very important function for autonomous vehicles. Conventional vehicle detection approaches are based on visible-light images obtained from cameras mounted on a vehicle in the daytime. However, unlike daytime, a visible-light image is generally dark at night, and the contrast is low, which makes it difficult to recognize a vehicle. As a feature point that can be used even in the low light conditions of nighttime, the rear lamp is virtually unique. However, conventional rear lamp-based detection methods seldom cope with atypical lamps, such as LED lamps, or flashing turn signals. In this paper, we detect atypical lamps by blurring the lamp area with a low pass filter (LPF) to make out the lamp shape. We also propose to detect flickering of the turn signal lamp in a manner such that the lamp area is vertically projected, and the maximum difference of two paired lamps is examined. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has a higher F-measure value of 0.24 than the conventional lamp pairing-based detection methods, on average. In addition, the proposed algorithm shows a fast processing time of 6.4 ms per frame, which verifies real-time performance of the proposed algorithm.

  • In this paper, we proposed an autostereoscopic display simulator that calculates an extended intensity distribution of light emitted from respective light sources and reaching respective views in an observing area to an observing plane. It simulates intensity distribution in horizontal and vertical observing ranges from the predetermined observing plane and obtains an optimal viewing area image having quantities of light according to respective views based on the intensity distribution data. As a result of the simulation the proposed system enables guiding viewing comfort zone interactively.
