  • In this study, energy budget was estimated to produce an efficient artificial seed. And it needs to enhance fisheries productivity of sandfish, A. japonicus. In order to estimate energy budget of the sandfish, A. japonicus juvenile fed on nonriched Artemia nauplii (NA) and the enriched Artemia nauplii (EA), of sandfish were reared at constant condition of seawater temperature of natural temperature (NT) and heated temperature (HT). During the reared period, energy used by the reared juveniles were calculated from estimates of data on ingestion, growth, oxygen consumption, nitrogen excretion and energy content. Energy budget of NT-NA, NT-EA, HT-NA and HT-EA were represented as 100C=66.49G+21.28M+0.78F+1.44U, 100C=67.54G+21.40M+9.39F+1.67U, 100C=66.86G+22.66M+8.01F+2.47U and 100C=67.06G+22.96M+7.70F+2.28U. The assimilation efficiency estimated NT-NA, NT-EA, HT-NA and HTEA were represented as 87.78%, 88.94%, 89.52% and 90.02%. Gross growth efficiency estimated NT-NA, NT-EA, HT-NA and HT-EA were represented as 66.49%, 67.54%, 66.86% and 67.06%. Net growth efficiency estimated NT-NA, NT-EA, HT-NA and HT-EA were represented as 75.75%, 75.94%, 74.68% and 74.49%. In this results, two ways could be considered to produce an efficient artificial seed of sandfish. To hasten the growth of sandfish juvenile, heated seawater (HT) and enriched Artemia nauplii (EA) should be inputted to reared condition. And to increase the energy efficiency, natural seawater (NT) and enriched Artemia nauplii (EA) should be inputted to reared condition.

  • Density and sound speed contrasts (g and h, respectively), and swimming angle were measured for sandfish (Arctoscopus japonicus) without swimbladder. The density contrast was measured by the volume displacement method while the sound speed contrast was measured by the acoustic measurements of travel time (time-of-flight method). The swimming angle was measured by dividing it into daytime, nighttime, daytime feeding and nighttime feeding. The g was 1.001 to 1.067 with an average (± standard deviation) of 1.032 (± 0.017), and the h was 1.007 to 1.022 with an average (± standard deviation) of 1.015 (± 0.003). The swimming angles (mean ± standard deviation) were 16.8 ± 10.3° during the daytime, 1.9 ± 12.3° during the nighttime, 30.2 ± 12.6° in the daytime feeding and 35.0 ± 13.2° in the nighttime feeding. These results will provide important parameters input to calculate theoretical scattering models for estimating the acoustic target strength of sandfish.

  • The feeding habits of sandfish, Arctoscopus japonicus were studied using 781 specimens collected by Eastern Sea Danish and gill net from January 2020 to December 2021 in the coastal waters of East Sea, Korea. The size of the specimens ranged from 14.8 to 25.4 cm in total length. A. japonicus were fed mainly on amphipods that constituted 54.7% in IRI. Cephalopods were the second largest prey component. The diets also include small quantities of euphausiids, crabs, shrimps, fishes, and worms. The diet composition of A. japonicus showed changes in season. The cephalopods feeding rate was highest in summer, whereas the proportion of euphausiids was higher in spring than in other seasons. The proportion of cephalopods has increased as the body size of A. japonicus increased, whereas the proportion of amphipods and euphausiids decreased gradually. As the body size of A. japonicus increased the mean weight of prey per the stomach (mW/ST) tended to increase significantly (One-way ANOVA, P<0.05).

  • To estimate the biological reference points, suitable for fisheries management of sandfish Arctoscopus japonicas in the East Sea of Korea, we simulated the yield-per-recruit (Y/R) from age 0 to 6 (0-2,555 days). The stimulation was based on two instantaneous natural mortality conditions: size-dependent (Mt, d-1) and constant (Mcons, d-1); Subsequently, the biological reference points of the two mortality conditions was compared. Mt decreased from 0.0075 d-1 to 0.0018 d-1 depending on growth, and Mcons remained constant at 0.0011 d-1 for all ages. Our Y/R model showed that the maximum yield of Mcons was 14 times higher than that of the Mt. The length at first capture to maximize the harvest at the F0.1 points of the two natural mortality conditions was Lc,t=10.2 cm (TL) and Lc,cons=17 cm (TL). We concluded that Mt was more suitable for estimating M than Mcons; this is because Lc,t showed minimal difference from the current fishing regulations (11 cm, TL), and Mt reflected more biological characteristics than Mcons. We suggest that 10.2 cm and 0.8 as the suitable length at first capture and corresponding age, respectively for efficient fisheries management of sandfish.

  • Sand fish, Arctoscopus japonicus (Steindachner) is distributed in the coastal waters of East Sea of Korea, Japan, and Alaska. On December 1, 1987, matured adult of sand fish were collected from the shore of Ok-kye, Myongju-gun, Kangwon-do, Korea. The authors carried out artificial insemination on boat. The fertilized eggs were incubated and the larvae were reared in laborato교. The eggs of this species were demersal and adhesive, and their diameter were varied within $3.1\~3.4$mm (mean 3.3 mm, n= 10). They have a number of small oil globules. The spawned eggs in nature were formed the egg mass which were measured ca. 4 m in dia-meter. The hatching took place in 65 days after fertilization at the water temperature of $8.7\~12.3^{\circ}C$. The newly hatched larvae were $8.5\~10.2$ mm in total length with 11 (abdominal) +40 (caudal) = 51 myomeres. 24 days after hatching, the larva attained 19.4 mm in total length, at this time the larvae absorbed the yolk completely, and become postlarvae. 32 days after hatching, the larva attained 23.4 mm in total length, and become juvenile. 56 days after hatching, the juvenile reached 29.9 mm in total length and had adult form. 5 spines of preopercle bone were formed at 24.4 mm in total length. At ca. 15 mm in total length, the form of the pectoral fin was transformed into the adult form.

  • We examined the species composition and community structure of demersal fish in the middle and southern coastal waters of the East Sea of Korea by surveying a commercial Danish seine fishery from 2010 to 2013. We considered the waters north of $37^{\circ}N$ as middle and those south of $37^{\circ}N$ as southern waters. A total of 79 demersal fish species belonging to 18 families were collected. Of these, 59 species (77.6%) inhabited only the East Sea as opposed to the West and South Seas of Korea, and most were resident species. The species and biomass were similar between the two portions of the study area. The sandfish Arctoscopus japonicus (78.0%) and the blackfin flounder Glyptocephalus stelleri (65.1%) were the most common species and accounted for the most biomass in the middle and southern waters, respectively. Fish were most abundant at shallow depths (50-100 m) in the middle portion of the East Sea. Using a cluster analysis, we divided the species composition and community structure at the sampling stations into three groups: middle portion (group A), deep area of the southern portion (group B), and shallow areas of the southern portion (group C). A. japonicas and G. stelleri were dominant in groups A and B, while G. stelleri and Clupea pallasii were dominant in group C.

  • Changes in target strength (TS) values of sandfish when sandfish was alive and dead were investigated using ex-situ at 120 kHz. TS values measured by tilt angles with -50~+50 degrees showed ranges from -71.0 to -53.3 dB for live sandfish, -63.1~-46.3 dB for thawed sandfish, and -70.0~-50.4 dB after 24 hours from thawed, respectively. It was shown that while TS values were similar between the case of live and the case of after 24 hours from thawed, mean TS values were higher by approximately 5 dB in the case of immediate thawed sandfish. It was also seen that TS values were similar between the case of thawed sandfish and the case of after 21 hours from live. The results showed that TS values of live sandfish were different from those of frozen sandfish. It implies that when estimating TS of frozen fish, the influx of bubbles and changes of body should be considered.

  • Since the late 1990s, walleye pollock Gadus chalcogrammus fisheries in Korean waters have been considered collapsed. Although many fisheries scientists suspect that the collapse might have been triggered by overexploitation of juvenile pollock or environmental changes, such conjectures have been neither tested nor investigated, partially because of limited data on the population. There has been no survey of the population, and the ages of fish in fishery catch have rarely been identified. Instead, fishery catch data from 1975-1997 included information about two life stages, 'juveniles and adults,' and data on catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) during 1963-2007 and those on fish length and weight during 1965-2003 had been sporadically collected from commercial fisheries. To test hypotheses about the collapse of the pollock fisheries, we used a statistical linear model with juvenile CPUE as the response variable, and abiotic (e.g., water temperatures) and biotic factors [e.g., adult pollock, flatfishes (Pleuronectidae sp.), and sandfish (Arctoscopus japonicus) CPUEs] as the explanatory variables. The model results indicated that depletion of the pollock population was associated with both biotic (adult pollock and flatfishes abundance) and abiotic factors (mid-water temperatures in February and October). We further interpreted the results from ecological and biological perspectives, suggesting possible mechanisms.

  • Quality of meaty textured fish protein concentrate (MT-FPC) prepared from filefish. Navodon modestus, and sandfish. Arctoscopus japonicus, was investigated. The stability of the product during storage under various conditions was evaluated with rehydration capacity, thiobarbituric acid (TBA) value and browning colour density. MT-FPC packed in glass bottle with air and stored at room temperature showed no significant differences in TBA value, rehydration capacity and browning colour density during the storage period of 90 days. The jelly strength of product prepared from filefish was weaker than that of sandfish: and beef meat could be substituted with MT-FPC up to 50% in making hamburger and fried meat balls without a significant loss in taste, odor and texture.

  • An investigation on optimum processing conditions for meaty textured fish protein concentrate (MT-FPC) was carried out with the fish meat of filefish, Navodon modestus, and sandfish. Arctoscopus japonicus. The processing conditions were determined by the lipid content and the rehydration capacity of MT-FPC. The optimum pH and sodium chloride content of fish meat were 8.0 and 1.0%, respectively. The most effective soaking conditions were: soaking time in chilled ethanol was 15 min for both filefish and sandfish; amount of chilled ethanol, 3 volumes and 4 volumes for filefish and sandfish, respectively; temperature of chilled ethanol, $25 ^{\circ}C$ for both filefish and sandfish; soaking time in boiling ethanol, 15 and 25 min for filefish and sandfish, respectively; amount of boiling ethanol, 2 and 4 volumes for filefish and sandfish, respectively; and number of snaking in boiling ethanol, 2 and 4 times for filefish and sandfish, respectively. Yields of the product to the minced meat weight, the contents of protein and lipid in MT-FPC prepared from filefish were 13.7%, 84.5% and 0.2%, and those from sandfish were 12.5%, 84.2% and 1.1%, respectively.
