  • The purpose of this research is to understand, through a case study, how the flexibility of Headquarter(HQ) and subsidiaries makes an effect on performance of global ERP system implementation in a global firm. The questions of this research are as follows. First, what types of flexibility are there for HQ and Subsidiary, respectively, which are related with global ERP system implementation? Second, how much impact do these types of flexibility have on the performance of global ERP system implementation? This research suggests three types of flexibility for HQ and three types of flexibility for subsidiaries that are related with the global ERP system implementation. In this study, BorgWarner, a global automobile parts manufacturer, was selected and analyzed to find out what kinds of flexibility contributed to enhancing its global ERP system implementation performance.

  • In this study this writer carried out survey and analysis on paving materials of children's playground for 40 apartment buildings with each of such apartment containing 100 households or more and which were built within last 15 years in Jeonju. As a result of analysis of such questionnaires this author could draw following conclusion. In the second half of 1990s pavement materials which were used mainly were sand and during first half of 2000s they were mixture of sand and rubber block and around 2010 they were rubber block or rubber chip pavements. Such change seemed to be a result of consideration of convenience for management and safety rather than in deference to diversity of children's outing places. Survey on the current status of pavement materials revealed need for directives by the main entity for management and their firm resolve for its implementation. And there was need for their coping with problems such as pressure of treading or lack of it or poor condition of drainage in case of sand and phenomena of pitting or dipping down, discoloring and poor drainage in case of rubber chips and rubber blocks and loosening of gaps between rubber blocks etc. Result of analysing status of usage disclosed that 50.4% of the respondents to questionnaires stated that they had experience of accidents. With regard to cause of such accident it was found that 47.5% of accidents were attributable to play facilities and 19.5% were due to paving (floor) materials thus it was disclosed that not only play facilities but also pavement materials had impact on safety for the children. Result of analysing level of satisfaction with pavement materials showed that pavement by rubber chips and blocks had higher level of satisfaction which was reflection of fear on cleanness of sand. In terms of preference rubber chip and rubber block pavements were highest and the next one was sand. Reason for such preference was based on concern with safety.

  • The Unified Modeling Language becomes popular to specify, visualize, construct, and document software-intensive systems, especially in supporting the design phase of software engineering. Most of designs in UML have focused on firm designing of software system structure. Recently, some researches have raised additional demands in many emerging complex software systems, such as aspect-oriented design. In this paper, we work on the dynamic aspect of policy-driven architecture. We present a UML-based high-level modeling of policy-driven management which is applicable in various application domains. In order to manage a number of activities of applications, dynamics and flexibility should be supported with policies consistently on different resources in the same context. Thus, a methodology of meta-modeling to represent dynamic aspects of policy-driven architecture is studied. Based on our methodology, we could achieve meta-modeling to develop a number of policy-driven management applications.

  • This study strives to seek the background in Ho-Seo Bank(HQ)'s foundation and its urban meaning. First, the thesis intends to understand the autonomous characteristics of Ho-Seo Bank which had been supported by Korean capitalists(landowners and merchants), keeping their pure capitals acquired by regular traditional marketplaces and farming works around Yesan. Second, through quantification data, it deals with reasons that the Ho-Seo Bank have been situated on a triangular corner that meets three roads toward a main thoroughfare toward Gongju to Hongseong, a railroad station, and a downtown area(Honmachi(本町通)) each. Third, it discusses the subsequent changes of Yesan's urban landscape that resulted from the Ho-Seo Bank's foundation(1913). In other words, thanks to a newly founded Ho-Seo Bank's headquarter(1922) and partly opening of a railway(Gyeongnam, 1922), Yesan became more advanced constructing both a political venue for a military police, a county office, et cetera, and then an educational place for schools. In conclusion, such urban phenomena shows there would be a dual combination between Korean people(aboriginal landowners and intellectuals) in autonomous efforts and Japanese officials in heteronomous controls. This thesis further contends that Ho-Seo Bank architecture itself reflects their status in the locality, who envisioned a 'cultural equality,' competing with Japanese aggressors, and its firm and massive form shows a new building type of bank architecture, literally representing the safeness and firmness, so differentiated from other buildings with the 'Secession' style in colonial areas under the control of the world powers.

  • Advances in information and mobile technologies have changed the traditional firm ways of working very flexible, collaborative and innovative, resulting in the changes in work place structures and layouts. Despite the growing body of literature examining the novel ways of working, which is called smart work, there is little academic attentions paid to the spatial aspects of new work places, namely smart offices and smart work centers. This research explores the spatial changes of work places that improve business efficiency and collaboration among workers suitable for the novel ways of working. Conducting in-depth field surveys on selected cases, we analyzed the changes in spatial structure and operation policies of smart offices and smart work centers. From this survey, we observed that the new work places under study take various novel spatial forms and they have flexible operating policies such as flexible seating and flexible work hours. We also found that it would be difficult to change existing business practices and typical ways of performing tasks, without changing the bureaucratic spatial designs and layouts. Future studies are suggested to examine how spatial structures and layouts of offices have impacts on space utilization, collaboration, creativity, and job satisfaction.

  • Computerized visual database construction of architectural precedents has just begun in some research institutes in the world. In Korea the first visual database has shown its testl version by S architectural design firm in september 1996. In this article the author discusses the historical contexts and the recent computerization cases, the traits, the uses and the limits of architectural visual database system of precedents. The forms and contents of data fields in two cases are compared with a focus on the description of architectural traits of each data entry. Compared to the KIA format, the S database has better performance for architectural design reference because it collects more pictures and drawings and larger texts for the field of architectural chracteristics. But this latter also is constrained by its capacity of memory and so lacks the reciprocity of the DOORS in the Graduate School of Design, Harvard University. A visual database system which has more flexible allocation of memory and respondent with the users is yet to be prepared. But this system also should be maintained by some experts in architectural history, theory and criticism, because their knowledge is essential for selection of precedents and revision of the data description. A full-fledged electronic visual database in architecture will not only save much effort for the architect, but also will change the architects' design behavior. Nevertheless this does not mean the automatic promotion of architects' creativity.

  • ERP systems are comprehensive sorfware packages that seek to integrate the complete range of lbusiness processes and functions in order to present a heuristic perspectives of a firm from a single information and information technlogy architecture. The ERP systems have delicate internal controls with built-in devices. It is known that the delicate internal controls help to enhance the accounting transparency. We empirically investigate the relationship between the ERP systems inplementations and an accounting transparency. In order to measure the accounting transparency differences, we compare the ERP systems implementation firms with firms which did not implement the ERP systems by 6 financial ratios (accruals, net profit margin, operation cash folo to sales, total debt to equity, accounts receivable changes, assets quality). Data are collecte from 135 firms implemented the ERP systems and 135 firms non-implemented the systems (the firms listed in the Korea Stock Exchange). We analyze financial statements from 270 firms for the period 2001-2003 to ezamine the 6 financial ratios differences. The results of 810 firms analyses over the 3-year period indicate that the ERP systems implementation firms show the statistically significant differences in the accrual ratio, the net profit margin ratio, operating cash flow to sales ratio, and total debt to equity ratio from the ERP systems non-implementation firms. But there is statistically no differences between the two groups for accounts receivable changes to sales ratio and assets quality.

  • ERP is an essential information system (IS) that many companies are operating on the basis of this solution. Since ERP is a very important system that is used in business operation and provides quantified information about the efficiency and productivity of the business activities, difference of competitiveness between companies that have successfully implemented ERP and those that do not have is very large. According to a survey done by a global consulting firm, far less than half of the companies are evaluated as successfully internalizing ERP into their organizations. Therefore, there is a need for an accurate assessment of ERP usage and an improvement of ERP based on it and the need become to increase largely. However, in reality, there is neither the systematic evaluation methods or any research about this topic. This study proposes a framework for evaluating the routinization of ERP throughout the life cycle of the ERP based on both the literature in the enterprise architecture, ERP lifecycle, ERP success areas, and actual experience of the authors in ERP implementation. The proposed framework intends to satisfy the following functional requirements : 1) the entire lifecycle of ERP should be evaluated; 2) evaluation of ERP should be performed from the enterprise-wide perspective; 3) evaluation should focus on the core activities of the organization; and objective evaluation criteria should be used in the evaluation.

  • This paper proposes and examines the economic impact of infrastructure improvement on the San-En-Nanshin region in the Chubu area of Japan. We develop a single transportation computable general equilibrium (CGE) model for each subregion within the San-En-Nanshin region. The explicit modeling of the transportation infrastructure is defined based on interregional commuting flows and business trips, considering the spatial structure of the San-En-Nanshin economy. A CGE model is integrated with an interregional transportation network model to enhance the framework's potential for understanding the infrastructure's role in regional development. To evaluate the economic impact of transportation improvement, we analyze the interrelationship between travel time savings and regional output and income. The economic impact analysis under the CGE framework reveals how transportation facilities and systems affect firm and household behavior and therefore induce changes in the production and consumption of commodities and transportation services. The proposed theoretical model was tested by using data from the 2005 IO tables of each subregion and the 2006 transport flow dataset issued by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism in Japan. As a result, the paper confirms the positive effect of transportation investment on the total output and income of the studied region. Specifically, we found that while economic benefits typically appear in urban areas, rural areas can still potentially benefit from transportation improvement projects.
