  • The history of architectural acoustics is a part of history of human being getting together for both politics and entertainments, is also a part of the history of nobility pursuing hearing enjoyments, is still a part history of scientists deeply understanding the concept of "just for people", and as well as is a part history ceaselessly driven by the musicians to find their real hearts through music. The history of architectural acoustics explains not only the acoustic knowledge developments in architectural design, but also the unity on contradictory of both the science and the arts, both the technology and the culture, both the sense and sense organ. The history of architectural acoustics prints the interactions between the mankind and the nature, between the mankind and themselves, between the mankind and their souls, in which course people understand their feelings more deeply and deeply. This paper discusses the brief history of architectural acoustic in China from the ancient drama stages to grand theaters in 20 century, even up to nowadays, including some most important buildings and events as well.

  • Psychophysical approaches to the room acoustics have been made in number of researches. The present study is looking at whether the listener's perception of frequency change in rooms are dependent on the acoustics of a listening environment. P(C)s for frequency change in short tones were measured in different listening conditions. Two experiments were carried out to investigate the influence of room acoustics on the listener's perception of frequency change, and its implication for evaluating the acoustics of listening environments were examined and discussed. It was found that the temporal and spectral contents of reflections from room surfaces might be an important factor which influenced the listener's perception of frequency change in a reverberant sound field. This implicates that psychophysical approach by measuring listener's frequency change perception might be an useful tool for evaluating room acoustics. However, cares should be taken, since some individual differences were found to exist with respect to the direction of frequency change.

  • The subjective experiments on professional musicians using the four channel real-time convolution system were conducted to investigate the effect of reverberant sound pressure level ($L_{rev}$) for stage acoustics. The strength of $L_{rev}$ was changed to 2 dB steps to investigate the optimal strength for ease of performance and the subjective questionnaire survey was conducted to investigate the effect of subjective factor by $L_{rev}$. From the experimental results, a specific strength of $L_{rev}$ is related to ease of music performance. Loudness and directivity are highly correlated.

  • By virtue of recent economic development and cultural progress, the desires willing to enjoy a plentiful leisure life among people are on enlarging, then according to this, the demand for a grand performance hall where various cultural events are achievable is also on increasing. However, since the grand performance hall has its characteristics that must accommodate various forms of performances likely from lecture, meeting activity to recital, and because the clearness of sound is on emphasizing, and also it requires the repletion or abundance of sound simultaneously, it could be said that from the designing stage, a sufficient examination and plan with regard to the architectural acoustics design is indispensable. On such view point, for the object of the grand performance hall under actually planning to build, this Study is attempting to compare analyze on Room Acoustics Characteristics using computer simulation from the stage of design. It is considered that the material analyzed in such way could be reflected in maximum basis to the design of the performance hall that minimizes the acoustic defect at the designing step, and also it could be utilized as the useful material at the time of design for a similar form of performance hall in the future.

  • Domestically, demands for multi-purpose performance venues which accommodate various performance genres have increased. However, those venues have limited capability and confined to a primary performance. The present work investigated various methods for controlling the acoustics of room for required performance genres by reviewing aurally presented and published materials. The method of varying the acoustics of a space is called Variable Acoustics, and adjusted in either passive and active ways. Passive control encompasses variable absorption, variable volume, coupled volume, and canopy reflectors, where the acoustics of a room is controlled in an architectural way. Active control includes In-line, Regenerative, and Hybrid systems where the acoustics of a room is manipulated electronically. The mechanism and application of each passive control system in existing venues are reviewed and their pros and cons are discussed. Also, the concept of each active systems and product applications are looked at through literature reviews. Lastly, some considerations that need to be taken into in the planning and design stage of a multi-purpose hall using Variable Acoustics are suggested.

  • In airport terminal, aural information is transmitted during 24 hours a day including announcement, background music and emergency control. So, clear sound is mostly necessary to transmitted to the passengers in airports. IIA (Incheon International Airport) is one of the largest airports accommodating 45 million people a year which have been built since 2001. There are currently three passenger terminals including Terminal 1 & 2, and boarding concourse. The $2^{nd}$ passenger terminal is under construction to expand the spaces which will be finished in 2020. The present work aims to explain the design principles of both architectural acoustics and electo-acoustics which have been applied to all the terminal buildings in IIA including ticketing counter, great hall, departure concourse and transportation center. Also, the acoustical performances of those spaces were examined. As a result, acoustic standards for airport were suggested. Architectural concepts for designing ceiling spaces and sound absorption treatments were suggested. Also, electro-acoustic design principles were commented.

  • In case of domestic performance hall, it is real situation that the demand of multipurpose hall that accommodative a lecture, gathering activity, drama and concert than a professional performance hall such as opera house, is on increasing. Accordingly, since such multipurpose hall, in view of its characteristics, is emphasizing the clearness of sound, also it requiring the repletion or abundance of sound simultaneously, it could be said that the sufficient examination and plan with regard to the architectural acoustics design is indispensable. However, since most of multipurpose hall has ever been designed and constructed without any consideration on an acoustic factor, many problem points are generating. Standing on such viewpoint, this Research has measured the physical acoustic characteristics about the small-scaled multipurpose hall recently built without any acoustic consideration, and through the above, tried to grasp the acoustic defect and controversial point thereof. It is deemed that such study result could be utilized as an important material for improvement the acoustic performance of the multipurpose hall.
