  • The direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method is applied to investigate the flow field of a disk-type drag pump. The pumping channels are cut on both sides of a rotating disk. The rotor has 10 Archimedes' spiral blades. In the present DSMC method, the variable hard sphere model is used as a molecular model, and the no time counter method is employed as a collision sampling technique. For simulation of diatomic gas flows, the Larsen-Borgnakke phenomenological model is adopted to redistribute the translational and internal energies.

  • We examine how the formulas of the area and the circumference of a circle related to pi in the ancient Egyptian and the Old Babylonian fields of mathematics have been controversial. In particular, the Great Pyramid of Khufu, Ahmes Papyrus Problem 48 and Moscow Mathematical Papyrus Problem 10 have raised extensive controversy over π. We propose the pi-theory of the Great Pyramid of Khufu as a dynamic symmetry based on Euclid's rectangle. In addition, we argue that the ancient Egyptian or Old Babylonian mathematics influenced Solomon's Molten Sea, Plato and Archimedes' pi.

  • developed by solving practical problems and gradually formalized and abstracted. But school mathematics seemed to stress the formalized and abstracted mathematics. The same is the case with calculus. In particular, it appeared extremely in teaching of calculus. It caused hindrance of learning and indeed, many students had difficulties in teaming of calculus. Therefore this study investigates the various approaches of calculus teaching and the history of calculus which include approaches by Archimedes, Galileo, Newton, Leibniz and Weierstrass etc. This may offer the implication for calculus teaching and we can find the alternative on the method of calculus teaching in historico-genetic principle. Finally we suggest the direction of calculus teaching from this perspective in tile concrete.

  • The effects of $Al_2O_3$ on the crystallization behavior of glass compositions in the $Na_2O$-CaO-$SiO_2$ system were investigated by differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effect of $Al_2O_3$ content on the mechanical properties, density, phase formation, and microstructures of $Na_2O$-CaO-$P_2O_5$-$SiO_2$ glass ceramics were studied. The thermal parameters of each glass were studied by DTA. The density of the glass ceramic samples was measured by Archimedes' method. It was found that the glass-ceramic containing 2.0 molar percent $Al_2O_3$ had desirable sintering behavior and reached an acceptable density. Phase investigation and micro-structural analysis were performed by XRD and SEM, respectively.

  • We propose and analyze a chord summation algorithm, which combines the ideas of Viète and Archimedes to calculate the value of π. The error of the algorithm decreases exponentially per iteration and becomes pinched at a critical iteration, depending on the accuracy of the first input value, ${\sqrt{2}}$. The critical iteration is also analyzed.

  • The flow fields in the volute casing of a small-size turbo-compressor at different flowrate (design point ${\pm}20%$) are studied by numerical analysis. The governing equations for three-dimensional steady viscous flow are solved using SIMPLE algorithm with commercial code of STAR-CD. Numerical results show that the three-dimensional flow pattern inside the volute casing of a small-size turbo-compressor is strongly influenced by secondary flows that are typically created by the curvature or the casing passages. The flow pattern in the casing also affects the performance of the turbo-compressor. In order to elucidate the loss mechanism through the volute, we prepared the secondary flow, velocity magnitude, and static pressure distribution at the four cross-sectional planes of the casing.

  • On the basis of the meaning and general process of geometric proof through transformation concept and understanding the geometric properties of linear transformation, this study showed that the centroid of geometrical figure and certain properties of a parabola and an ellipse in school mathematics can be explained as a conservative properties through linear transformation. From an educational perspective, this is a good example of showing the process of how several existing individual knowledge can be reorganized by a mathematical concept. Considering the fact that mathematical usefulness of linear transformation can be revealed through an invariable and conservation concept, further discussion is necessary on whether the linear transformation map included in the former curriculum have missed its point.

  • In the present work, we use multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) as the starting material for the fabrication of sintered carbon steel. A comparison is made with conventionally sintered carbon steel, where graphite is used as the starting material. Milling is performed using a horizontal mill sintered in a vacuum furnace. We analyze the grain size, number of pores, X-ray diffraction patterns, and microstructure. Changes in the physical properties are determined by using the Archimedes method and Vickers hardness measurements. The result shows that the use of MWCNTs instead of graphite significantly reduces the size and volume of the pores as well as the grain size after sintering. The addition of $Y_2O_3$.to the Fe-MWCNT samples further inhibits the growth of grains.

  • A numerical study has been conducted to investigate the effect of inflow supply air temperature and velocity on ventilation effectiveness in an underfloor air conditioning space. A low Reynolds number k-$\varepsilon$ model is implemented to calculate steady state turbulent velocity distributions. A step-down injection method is used to calculate local and room mean ages from transient concentrations based on the concept of the age of air. Results show that there is a significant effect of Archimedes number on ventilation effectiveness especially for cooling conditions. Reynolds number shows relatively minor effect on velocity distribution and ventilation effectiveness especially for isothermal and heating conditions. It can be concluded that underfloor air conditioning system provides good ventilation characteristics for cooling conditions because of temperature stratification in the space.

  • This research was a fundamental study for the low temperature sintering of PZTN by glass phase transient processing. To lower the sintering temperature, the glass phase Processing was used. Also to improve the electrical properties, the transient processing was utilized. After characterization, the various analytic techniques, such as Archimedes method for the measuring densification, x-ray diffraction patterns for the quantitative analysis of crystalline phases were utilized. Also the dielectric constant, dissipation factor, and piezoelectric coefficients were measured to evaluate the PZTN sintered at the $950^{\circ}C$ and $1050^{\circ}C$. This was confirmed that the sintering temperature of PZTN was reduced by $950^{\circ}C$ and the electrical properties were improved by the transition processing. Therefore, the glass phase transient processing can be applicable to low the sintering temperature with the dielectric and piezoelectric properties.
