A conservative finite-volume numerical method for unstructured grids with the cell-centered method has been developed for computing flow and heat transfer by combining the attractive features of the existing pressure-based procedures with the advances made in unstructured grid techniques. This method uses an integral form of governing equations for arbitrary convex polyhedra. Care is taken in the discretization and solution procedure to avoid formulations that are cell-shape-specific. A collocated variable arrangement formulation is developed, i.e. all dependent variables such as pressure and velocity are stored at cell centers. For both convective and diffusive fluxes the forms superior to both accuracy and stability are particularly adopted and formulated through a systematic study on the existing approximation ones. Gradients required for the evaluation of diffusion fluxes and for second-order-accurate convective operators are computed by using a linear reconstruction based on the divergence theorem. Momentum interpolation is used to prevent the pressure checkerboarding and a segregated solution strategy is adopted to minimize the storage requirements with the pressure-velocity coupling by the SIMPLE algorithm. An algebraic solver using iterative preconditioned conjugate gradient method is used for the solution of linearized equations. The flow analysis code (PowerCFD) developed by the present method is evaluated for its application to several 2-D structured-mesh benchmark problems using a variety of unstructured quadrilateral and triangular meshes. The present flow analysis code by using unstructured grids with the cell-centered method clearly demonstrate the same accuracy and robustness as that for a typical structured mesh.
Although the radioisotope liver scan has primarily been of use in the detection of the intra-hepatic space occupying lesions, there has been an increasing awareness of its use in evaluation of liver function. In this study, the degree of hepatomegaly, changes in shape and mottling radiodensity on each lobe and splenic visualization in the liver scans done with colloidal radiogold were numerically expressed as scores under the arbitrary standard in 210 patients with liver cirrhosis. The clinical value of this scoring system was studied with special regards to the correlation between the radiogold hepatic uptake half time and conventional liver function tests. Following were the results; 1) The normal scan appeared in 6.7% of 210 patients with liver cirrhosis. 2) The colloidal radiogold hepatic uptake half time was abnormally and progressively prolonged in parallel to severity of hepatocellular dysfunction. The mean hepatic uptake half time in cirrhosis showing normal scan was $2.76{\pm}0.73$ minutes. 3) The scoring system was well correlated with the serum albumin and globulin levels, A/G ratio and BSP retention. There was some correlative tendency in alkaline phosphatase activity. 4) There was no correlation with the thymol turbidity test, cholesterol levels, transaminase activities and bilirubin levels. 5) The spleen was visualized in 38.6% of total patients with liver cirrhosis. Excluding normal scans in liver cirrhosis, the spleen was visualized in 41.3%. 6) The scoring system appears to confirm the clinical diagnosis and to give a reliable estimate of the degree of hepatocellular dysfunction in patients with liver cirrhosis.

In order to move the body of a walking robot translationally, and step over the obstacles, the walking robot must have at least 3 degrees of freedom for each leg. Therefore each leg of the general walking robots can be composed of 3-link system with 3 revolute joints. In this paper, the colsed form of inverse kinimatic solutions is shown for this general 3R linkage. Moreover, in order to have efficient walking volume in rough terrain, the workspace of each log is obtained considering the twist angles and the offsets in D-H parameters. When we design a walking robot, the information of the walking volume is needed for planning desired trajectories of the feet effectively. Appropriate knowledge of the walking volume can also be used to maximize linear or angular velocity of minimize power of stress. However, since it is impossible to obrain the information of walking volume in 3-D space directly from the kinematic equations, the walking volume can be searched through the edge detection algorithm using the triangle tracer with closed from inverse kinematic solutions. In this study, we present the closed form inverse kinematic solutions for 3R linkage model, and the walking volume of 6 legged walking robot which is modeled after the darking bettle, Eleodes obscura sulcipennis, through the method of edge detection for an arbitrary 2 dimensional shape using triangle tracer.
Sustainable energy generation is becoming extremely imperative due to the expected limitations in current energy resources and to reduce pollution. Especially, because of its considerable energy potential, ocean wave energy has been investigated with regard to power generation. To develop large high power wave generator system, it is important to make a small scale proto type and to test that. Thus the objective of this research is to examine the characteristics of a mechanically excited generator system having small power capacity experimentally. The water reservoir (4 m length, 1.5 m width and 1.8 m depth) having a wave maker to make arbitrary height and period of the water wave was made. The proto type consists of three main parts; a buoy, rack-pinion base one-way mechanism, and a wave generator(Fig.1). The water wave is going up and down and the hexahedron buoy is following the wave. The rack gear attached to the buoy is also going up and down to roll the pinion connected to an electric generator then it produces electricity. The experiments were performed with several conditions of water waves, and the power outputs over 30 W could be measured for some conditions. In future works, to achieve higher performance for the proto type, the effects of primary parameters (buoy shape and mass, etc.) on the system efficiency will be identified.
This paper presents a fully coupled three-dimensional solver for the analysis of interaction between pulsatile flow and large deformation structure. A partitioned time marching algorithm is employed for the solution of the time dependent coupled discretised problem, enabling the use of highly developed, robust and well-tested solvers for each field. Conservative transfer of information at the fluid-structure interface is combined with an effective multi-predict-correct iterative scheme to enable implicit coupling of the interacting fields at each time increment. The three-dimensional unsteady incompressible fluid is solved using a powerful implicit time stepping technique and an ALE formulation for moving boundaries with second-order time accurate is used. A full spectrum of total variational diminishing (TVD) schemes in unstructured grids is allowed implementation for the advection terms and finite element shape functions are used to evaluate the solution and its variation within mesh elements. A finite element dynamic analysis of the highly deformable structure is carried out with a numerical strategy combining the implicit Newmark time integration algorithm with a Newton-Raphson second-order optimisation method. The proposed model is used to predict the wave flow fields of a particular flow-induced vibrational phenomenon, and comparison of the numerical results with available experimental data validates the methodology and assesses its accuracy. Another test case about three-dimensional biomedical model with pulsatile inflow is presented to benchmark the algorithm and to demonstrate the potential applications of this method.
Nondestructive methods such as ultrasonic and magnetic resonance imaging systems have many advantages but still much expensive. And they do not give exact color information and may miss some details. If it is allowed to destruct a biological object to obtain interior and exterior informations, 3D image visualization model from a series of sliced sectional images gives more useful information with relatively low cost. In this paper, a PC based automatic 3D visualization system is presented. The system is composed of three modules. The first module is the handling and image acquisition module. The handling module feeds and slices a cylindrical shape paraffin, which holds a biological object inside the paraffin. And the paraffin is kept being solid by cooling while being handled. The image acquisition modulo captures the sectional image of the object merged into the paraffin consecutively. The second one is the system control and interface module, which controls actuators for feeding, slicing, and image capturing. And the last one is the image processing and visualization module, which processes a series of acquired sectional images and generates a 3D volumetric model. To verify the condition for the uniform slicing, normal directional forces of the cutting edge according to the various cutting angles were measured using a strain gauge and the amount of the sliced chips were weighed and analyzed. Once the 3D model was constructed on the computer, user could manipulate it with various transformation methods such as translation, rotation, and scaling including arbitrary sectional view.

For data transmission over strictly band-limited non-ideal channels, different types of filters with arbitrary responses are needed. In this paper. we proposed two efficient techniques for the design of such FIR filters whose response is specified in either the time or the frequency domain. In particular when a fractionally-spaced structure is used for the transceiver, these filters can be efficiently designed by making use of characteristics of oversampling. By using a minimum mean-squared error criterion, we design a fractionally-spaced FIR filter whose frequency response can be controlled without affecting the output error. With proper specification of the shape of the additive noise signals, for example, the design results in a receiver filter that can perform compromise equalization as well as phase splitting filtering for QAM demodulation. The second method ad-dresses the design of an FIR filter whose desired response can be arbitrarily specified in the frequency domain. For optimum design, we use an iterative optimization technique based on a weighted least mean square algorithm. A new adaptation algorithm for updating the weighting function is proposed for fast and stable convergence. It is shown that these two independent methods can be efficiently combined together for more complex applications.

A segment of the wave board has been expressed as a submerged line segment in the two dimensional wave flume. The lower end of the line segment could be extended to the bottom of the wave flume and the other opposite upper end of the board could be extended to the free surface. It is assumed that the motion of the wave board could be defined by the sinusoidal motion in horizontal direction on either end of the wave board. When the amplitude of sinusoidal motion of the wave board on lower and upper end are equal, the wave board motion could express the horizontally oscillating submerged segment of piston type wave generator. The submerged segment of flap type wave generator also could be expressed by taking the motion amplitude differently for the either end of the board. The pivot point of the segment motion could play a role of hinge point of the flap type wave generator. Simplified analytic solution of oscillating submerged wave board segment in water of finite depth has been derived through the first order perturbation method at two dimensional domain. The case study of the analytic solution has been carried out and it is found out that the solution could be utilized for the design of wave generator with arbitrary shape by linear superposition.

This paper presents a new infinite element for modeling far-field region in dynamic analysis of a fluid-saturated two-phase medium. The infinite element method combined to the infinite element method has been effectively applied to several engineering problems where the full space or half-space medium should be modeled. However, the currently available infinite element for dynamic analysis of two-phase porous medium has a limitation that Pl and P2 waves can only be Included in shape function expressing behavior ol the body. In this paper, the infinite element method is extended to simulate arbitrary number of multi-component waves. For this purpose, the far-field of the porous medium is assumed to be a layered half-space, while the near-field Includes structures as well as irregular soil medium. The accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed element have demonstrated using 1-D and 2-D wave propagation problems.

JBIG2 is an International Standard fur compression of Bi-level images and documents. JBIG2 supports three encoding modes for high compression according to region features of documents. One of which is generic region coding for bitmap coding. The basic bitmap coder is either MMR or arithmetic coding. Pattern matching coding method is used for text region, and halftone pattern coding is used for halftone region. In this paper, a document is segmented into line-art, halftone and text region for JBIG2 encoding and JBIG2 CODEC is implemented. For efficient region segmentation of documents, region segmentation method using wavelet coefficient is applied with existing boundary extraction technique. In case of facsimile test image(IEEE-167a), there is improvement in compression ratio of about 2% and enhancement of subjective quality. Also, we propose arbitrary shape halftone region coding, which improves subjective quality in talc neighboring text of halftone region.
